Does anyone in OT VW?
I've only owned Japanese (Honda, Subaru) cars so I'm wondering how they compare in regards to reliability, ride comfort, and road noise . I was originally looking at the Focus ST but thought it was a little too aggressive for everyday driving and has that boy racer look.

Even my 65 year old mom had to mod hers to match the seats.
To answer your other questions, she bought it new in 2011 and hasn't had any serious issues in 60k miles. The most annoying part is the low profile 18 inch tires. Her stock Pirellis get really noisy after only a few thousand miles. Obviously it's more refined than a Honda/Subaru/Focus and still pretty fun to drive. Not really sure what they've changed lately. I've had an '11 since they hit the floor. Got 50K on the clock now. Starting to show some of the little gremlins that VW is so famous for, but really nothing that has been an issue.
My gf hates it because of the bumpy ride. Road noise is a little high, but not annoyingly so. Mileage is OK, but nothing special. Usually average I've got the manual, so I can't comment on DSG. Usually get 27-31 average throughout a full tank. I really like the handling of it. It's got sufficient power, but nothing spectacular. Decent cargo room with the back seats folded down. I've got the 2 door and no kids, and never have anybody in the back seat, so I can't tell you how useful those are. This will probably be my last VW for a while. But of the 3 that I have owned ('01 Jetta TDI, '09 Jetta TDI), it is definitely my favorite. |

IMO if you are worried about reliability then dont get a VW. If you are worried about ride comfort and road noise then dont get a cheap "sporty" vehicle. Sounds like you want Lexus or BMW. |

I had a 2012 and loved it but traded for a CC to accommodate parenthood. Stage 1 tune made it even more fun. Quality was top notch inside and out (in my opinion).
Be aware that it looks like we're getting the R400: http://www.roadandtrack.com/go/news/...for-production |

Our 2014 Passat is my first jump into Euro's/VW's and so far so good. We didn't get it for speed, but the 1.8T moves pretty well. Plus the interior is much better then that over any of my Subaru's.

The golf does probably have fully-independent rear suspension... It doesn't have those annoying flashing rear brake lights, the high dashboard, dickhead factor or a 5-liter engine fuel-consumption. So theres that. But those facts don't make it better or even comparable.

NOBODY is buying either of them for those items. Yes it has an independent rear which would be nice. Do you need one? Absolutely not. Lets compare the electronics and reliability. Id love to see what VW says about track usage when you come in for warranty work. |

Like someone would actually cross shop a VW GTi or that other powerful one with a Mustang and vice versa.

Probably but it would be dependent on gearing and tires. I'm sure the car will be fast and handle well but I just dont see a 400hp 2.0t motor being reliable or have any sort of torque.

The plaid interior matches those cool new short shorts that are all the rage for men this summer.

I've been happy with mine - 2013 with ~20k on the clock. Overall it's very comfortable, quick enough for FWD and the interior is nice. It's a nice car. I've driven Civics and the like and they don't compare in terms of refinement, interior and driving. The Focus ST was the closest. It's a good car too. Drive both and pick one.

The Focus ST is too agressive?
It looks like a ****in Focus, but with a front bumper that actually matches the rest of the car. OP WTF... |
