This used to be a forum of college engineers, auto-xers and car enthusiasts. It went downhill once the used Bugeye market became first-car cheap. Then add in the performance killing people listed above. WBM looks more and more like a sketchy mall at night than a car meet.

I liked the VA because it was a great overall package, but I do not like the overall change in the community. Volume sales aren't always good for a brand.
I'll probably catch some flak for this because I am a VA owner myself (or was, I actually just sold the car on Monday), but I agree that a lot of VA owners tend to be...not the type of people I really want to hang out with or talk to at a car meet.

Naturally I have a ton of aftermarket parts that I need to get rid of since I sold my car, so over the course of the past month or so I've been meeting up with local VA owners to sell my parts, all of which are completely random people who've responded to my Facebook FS ads. I've done probably 15 or so meetups so far and I would say all but maybe 2-3 of them were of a similar demographic. Young, questionable mods, basically screaming "look at me" as they have the loudest fart-cannon exhaust known to man and tons of tacky stickers on the rear window. A few of the guys I've met seemed to be older working professionals with more mature tastes in modifications, but those were the exception and not the norm. The kid I met up with yesterday to sell my rear F1 brake light to couldn't have been older than 19 or 20 and he kept asking me via Facebook Messenger beforehand how hard it it to install and if I could show him how to do so despite the fact that there are dozens of install video tutorials on Youtube (including an official install video from the brand that sells the light in the first place). Even after I sent him the video URL he kept asking me for step by step instructions on what he needs to do to install it. I don't mind helping people out or answering questions but to me it feels like a lot of the younger generation wants to be spoon-fed information and they don't take the time or effort to due their own due diligence to find answers that are super easy to find.

That's the "car community" as a whole these days, not just specific to Subaru. Go to any "car meet" that you find plastered on Instagram or Facebook and it's mostly just a bunch of tryhards standing around in a parking lot trying to impress random people that they don't know. Smaller/local meetups and especially forum-based meetups are the way to go if you are trying to avoid the hypebeast crowd IMO.

You're wrong. It's ALL marketing from the companies. They tell YOU what you want. How could you forget that?

Clearly they did not do a good job. I don't see the golf ball dimples in the cladding. So is this a Subaru campaign, as in is this their marketing dept?

I hate to nitpick someone who just agreed with me, but this is a prime example of the VA downhill effect. It is not an F1 light, it is not supposed to be tied to your brake lights, nor your rear lights to be on all the time. It is a fog light. It only goes on in inclement weather, via a separate dial, which the USDM cars don't have.

As soon as I see a VA with this light I cringe.

I'm sure it varies regionally but in my area most of the VA's you see are mostly stock and being driven by guys that look like me. 30-somethings, basic AF looking, probably working professionals of some sort. Car seat in back. Boring people. I lost count of how many VA's there are at work (and now a VB) and all are basically stock. I thought that was the damning thing about the VA! Normal people have flocked to them and diluted them as a cultural icon of cool (?) people. Here you guys are saying it's sorta the opposite.

I figure the VA is least likely to be owned and/or modded out by younger kids as it is newest, most expensive and least accessible (ignoring VB.) Anyway your parts-sale sampling would be biased because the people that actually mod tend to be younger and and more hungry for attention - nothing new or different there. It's human nature. All about getting that sperm to the egg, however misguided. Their testosterone and income levels have crossed at the right time to result in their decision to make obnoxious changes to their car. (No offense to you, recent modder. I'd be rolling in a yellow J's racing S2000 replica right now if my I maintained my early-20's testosterone levels through to today.)

The VA was so successful because it smoothed out some of the wrinkles that had basic people like me hesitate on WRX in the past. Thing is, that didn't make it any less of a mod-monster. Maybe the opposite. If the VA brought out more of any one demographic it was the boring people. But it brought out more of EVERY demographic. And certain people stand out a lot more than others.

My "F1" light was multi-function, and I held out until someone made one that could act as an additional brake light, plus the hyper flash to alert the moron texting behind me that I am there, as well as a reverse light to help with backing up at night (long dark driveway where I lived at the time).

I know people hate them on here but I can't understand why honestly. It's functional and gets rid of a stupid piece of plastic that is sitting there anyway. I was thinking about modifying one for my hatch for when I add my backup cam, love having it bright back there. Super low on the list though.

It's a rear fog light for Japan, Europe, etc. Would it be nice if Subaru provided it stock? Yes.

Hyper flash is annoying and looks like you have a short. Additional brake lights...you are only meant to have 3, provided by the manufacturer. It's distracting and unnecessary to have this "F1" light.

Not sure how it's "distracting". Makes him more visible. We have a customer that ordered an OEM one from a UK dealer years ago and installed it on his Crosstrek. He added a whole lotta other things as well. I liked it. Had to have a special switch cause US cars don't have the wiring to connect to the fogs(easily enough). At least that's what he was dealing with then. He has since moved on to a Forester Sport.

If you are behind someone and every time they hit their brake pedal a 4th red light hyper-blinks multiple times, that is distracting. It's not a turn single. Your 3 brake lights don't hyper flash. Now, you are adding a light, that blinks. Cars have two tail lights and a 3rd brake light. Not a 4th brake light (in before someone says, yea but if you have a dealer/port installed wing they have 4 lights...that looks terrible also).

Stats show that the flashing light is better. I was a disbeliever as well when we first started adding those to our cars; but, then did some looking. Couldn't find a negative about them. I don't remember the specific places I saw those numbers. Apologies

If it "distracted" you to see it, it did it's job.

There's no need to have it hyper flash. The flash is the most annoying part (having the 4th light in general is bad enough). It blinks like 4 times after other lights come on. This is not a nice fluid sequential signal light. It's like the car is having a seizure.

There's no argument to "need". It works. Plain and simple. I don't think there is a "need" for these new headlights(IIHS ratings). They are annoying cause they blind me as I'm driving. Are they nice for the driver of the car? Absolutely. LOVE them on my fire engine. But, I didn't need them for the decades I was driving before they were mandated(for safety rating). They work, though, don't they.

Works? Sure, if your goal is to annoy, distract, and possibly attract attention from Police as these lights could be illegal. Unless I am mistaken, you can't add flashing lights to your car for street-use (besides emergency services personnel).

Those LED off-road light-bars people use upfront work, they light up the road, but they blind on coming traffic, and again I'm pretty sure they are illegal for on-road use.

Lol, do they blink for normal driving, or just when their flashing lights are on?

I will add that I don't use my brakes very often and I liked the hyper flash for when driving on the lovely highways in and around Philly where traffic is constantly varying between free-for-all and standstill. I also had a smoked lens so it wasn't nearly as aggressive as emergency vehicle lights are. I will admit it was probably the most boiracer thing I have ever put on a car, well until my RGB headlights on the hatch. I don't drive around with them strobing though.

I feel like I have seen more and more emergency vehicles driving around with aggressive strobes as "warning/indicator" lights, like their version of hazards but on speed.

I hear ya. It's just annoying anytime you use the "F1 light." Nothing I can do about it, besides be annoyed and yell at my steering wheel lol.

Count me as someone who also finds the blinking fog light as annoying. I guess I don't really mind the thrice-blink brake lights, but using the rear fog light as a brake light that also hyper blinks is no bueno.

any time they hit the brakes, 6 different sets of LED lights flash for 3 seconds, then 6 different sets of LED lights are solid red.

they really want you to know they are stopping, or stopped.
