First and foremost: A HUGE thanks is owed to the entire crew at Jotech. This is an amazing shop that is going to do nothing but flurish even further than they already have.
To my story: I've got a 2004 WRX wagon that I bought in January. It's been an amazing car. Always pulled strong, never burned oil or coolant. No motor ticks or knocks. It had a couple mods and a "supposed" stg. 2 tune. I bought the car from a guy in Utah and drove it home for summer in Texas. I was in the process of slowly fixing some of the things that were wrong when I bought it (AEM intake, performance pads, slipping clutch, paint blemishes, fogged headlights, PURPLE tint, torn CV boot, etc. etc.) The motor and interior were SPOTTLESS which is why I was so comfortable buyin the car. After being home for 2 months, I was heading home from a friend's house. I was in 3rd gear merging with traffic on the freeway and decided to put my foot down. After boost came on at about 3k, a clicking noise started in the engine bay and smoke was pourin out the backside. I was only 2 miles from my house at this point and decided to limp it home. With very little throttle input, I pulled into my neighborhood. Right at that point in time, the clicking turned into a LOUD clanking and the smoke got much worse. The next morning, I called Shawn at Jotech by the recommendation of Joe Rigali. THANK YOU SO MUCH JOE!!!! Shawn came to my house and broke my heart with news that the turbo was fine, but the motor had let go. The next two weeks consisted of a few trips to Jotech and many phone calls with Shawn. We decided to upgrade things not only for power, but also for longevity. I found a used VF39 and intercooler for $520 (Thank you Tony!!!) We ordered a brand new EJ25 from Subaru. Also installed new gaskets, oil and water pumps, all rubber seals, spark plugs, timing belt, and thermostat with the motor. A GT Spec UEL header to pair with the bigger displacement for quicker spool and amazing sound. We also installed a Perrin inlet tube cause mine was leaking badly. Shawn was very thorough in his recommendations for the rebuild (except the EBCS.) Hahaha. JERK!! Because of the timing, I unfortunately had to drive the car for 2 weeks untuned. Shawn and Kenny drove the car while monitoring/adjusting the AFRs and decided it was safe under 5k. A road tune was all it needed to be safe. Even though the 2 liter was extremely strong, the amount of torque from the 2.5 is a completely different world. The quick and smooth spool up of the VF39 is great. Loved it. Tuning day finally came and we showed up after a fresh oil change hoping for the best, but not expecting Kenny to give me a space ship. First pull: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v489/InTheNameOfWeez/?action=view¤t=MVI_0432.flv Last pull: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v489/InTheNameOfWeez/?action=view¤t=MVI_0436.flv Well folks, a space ship is exactly what I got. After setting the AFRs to be safe over 5k, the first pull resulted in 303 ft-lbs torque. Kenny found this strange and looked at the ignition mapping. Needless to say, the tune was WAY too aggressive for the poor 2 liter. It had a huge advance in the timing between 3.2k and 4.5k. The motor was getting the piss beat out of it. Too much fuel and too much timing advance killed the motor. Not to mention the lack of proper oil changes creating some good amounts of sludge. Shawn thinks the ringland on #4 cylinder was cracked and the sideskirt finally let go. Then the rod. Not much I could've done about it without letting someone take a look at the custom map it had on it. But it's fixed and now running safe and strong. Now all I need are some STi injectors, Walbro FP, and a Grimm Speed EBCS. I'm also thinking about an EWG, but I'm still undecided. I need the mods asap though. The power just drops off after 5k. I want more. NOW. Lol. 20g? Again, thank you to the whole gang at Jotech. Please give these guys your business. They not only deserve it, but they want it. This is not a lazy group of guys. This is not a "wanna be" shop. They spent a lot of money to have a state of the art facility and dyno. I have no question in my mind that Shawn and Kenny will be able to service, upgrade, tune, or perform even simple preventative maintenance for anybody on the boards, not to mention your friends and family. Clayton

why would a shop release the car without at least a basemap tune AT LEAST? if I were an employee of the shop, I would have suggested leaving the car with me and getting a rental until I can get a decent tune. the car may be running great now, but I have a strong feeling there are going to be expensive repercussions in the end.

You were on a map that was for your previous 2.0 setup that gave out on you. You then drove the BRAND NEW ej25 with NEW modifications WITHOUT even a simple base map (which you can get for free), to me it seems that move is completely out of character of the Jotech that I know.

I just think that a simple base map tune to get rid of the old map or even a road tune would have been better than the previous tune for a completely different setup and different motor.

i think anything over 12.0 A/F without meth should be carefully looked at.
i run meth and i'm only at 11.4 A/F. rather conservative from AWDTuning, but at least i know my engine is making great power and will have a less chance of letting go. i also waste money and change the synthetic oil every 2500 miles religiously. carlos nice |

Seems awfully lean at 12.5. Does anyone know what the possible reprocussions of being so lean over a long time will be?

This isn't the tune that I'm driving the car on daily. He pulled boost to keep the AFR at a safe level. The dyno sheet you are all looking at was a power pull to see what the set-up can do. Can you all please stop trying to make it look like Jotech didn't do their job and is letting me drive a car that is unsafe.
No one thinks it's cool that the car is capable of 312whp with stock injectors and pump?!?! |
