Bought my 2008 Impreza 2.5i wagon in early February. Have 1,200 miles on it. I was averaging 28.5 mpg for my 100 mile daily commute. I reset the computer this morning, changed my route (more highway), used cruise control set at 70mph, and parked my car after 48 miles later with . . . 31.8mpg! That is with the last 5 miles driven on Pennsylvania Ave (heading into DC)!

I must say I am thoroughly pleased with this, especially after trading in my 16mpg truck!

I've played with the tripmeter and got similar results for pure highway trips. It will usually average back down with the few miles you might drive before and after the ramps.

However, still 30+ for highway time is a good thing.

Try going 55-60mph and it goes up even more.

I hate to say it, but it does pay to slow down.

I'm getting about 22 City/Hwy mix with 700 mi. in my '08 2.5i 5-door. I'm driving like I stole it. I'm still enjoying the upgrade from an '03 outback base.

I'm hoping that its gonna get much better in the summer and after I've broken it in.

Just an update . . . if I reset my computer before I leave for work (10 miles city, 40 miles highway) I have since gotten to 32.4mpg for about 3 miles .

At the end of the weekend (Fri, Sat, and Sun) after all city driving, I was "down" in the 28s.

My own calculations show that my average is about 29.89 total since buying the car in February.

I dont remember what i got stock...but if it helps with modification hesitation i have a 06 sti with fpgreen 2.4"8cm 840ccDW and supporting mods and still get 23ish mpg on the highway. City is probably more like 18 (however if i have been on the gas alot that tank it is terrible lol). For the HP im running i have been very happy with my mpg, as i have heard alot of horror stories about gas mileage above 350whp. Although alot of that probably has to do with my tune at least the concept that it is possible to get pretty decent mileage with mods is there.

It takes a while for your car to learn, mine use to say 18mpg but when you start refueling your tank, it'll go up gradually. I'm getting a smooth 25ish since I let my car warm up till the oil meter goes away from blue.

I dont drive mine like a baby all the time, but at 500 miles on the odometer I'm getting between 21-22mpg on my second tank of gas. Running premium (oct 92) on second tank seems to be getting a good boost in 1st and 2nd gear when I hit that 3600+ rpm range, but I'm guessing the premium is lowering the overall MPG.

Trying not to go above 4k rpm while under 1000 miles, but it is just too fun not to sometimes

Seems like the gas mileage is getting better as I break the car in. Was only getting 15mpg for the first few days I drove it, now it wont go below 21 on average between my city and highway driving. I did test it the other night on the way home from work with moderate traffic on the freeway, I reset the trip just as I was getting on the onramp. Being as light on the gas as I could and keeping it in 5th gear most of the time I inched it up to 32.5mpg before I had to get off the freeway and go back to city driving.

I am really hoping my average between city/highway gets up to the 25-30mpg range for the life of the car, but time will tell as I break it in.

At 13k miles I'm getting a solid 27mpg of mostly highway (pure highway trips are 30mpg on average). It will come up.

Also, your car does A LOT of idling or the dealer miles are super break in. My MPG was low at first, but after about 1000 miles I reset all the meters and instantly got at least a 3mpg bump. I think if you reset it you will get a much more true reflection of your real and current efficiency.

hello all!

for my first tank, i got 21.9 mixed driving according to the meter. but i calculated approx. 22.3 mpg.

i guess that's not bad for a first tank. after the first tank, i refilled up to a quarter of a tank. i did notice that the meter would rise and fall while driving. i am currently at 24.3 mpg. is the rising and falling of the meter while driving normal? or is it supposed to stay still and just keep rising?

i currently have 400+ miles. hope that mpgs improve.

not quite sure i understand you completely, but of course your MPG average is going to fluctuate, as it is calculated on the fly while you drive. the smaller the number of miles that you are calculating with, the more it is going to vary. if you reset your trip meter you will see it change drastically at first and slowly settle down as the miles accumulate and you get a solid mathematical average.

my A meter has only been reset once since i took delivery, and it is virtually locked at 27MPG for several thousand miles. my B meter I reset all the time for various reasons and you can watch the MPG change quite rapidly.

According to the owner's manual, it calculates every-- get this-- every 1 mile.

Interestingly, I have noticed that my MPG average only moves in increments of .3 (26.4, 26.7, 27.0, 27.3, etc)

Anyway, hope that answers your question.

I've also noticed that the MPG average only moves in increments of .3 as of right now with 700 miles on the car (obviously still green) It's at 24.3 with mostly city driving.

THANK YOU. you did answer my question. for a while i thought my meter was possessed! LOL

Mine also moves in increments of 0.3. I haven't read the entire manual, so I didn't know that it calculates every mile. If that is the case, then it makes sense that the meter rises and falls (fluctuates) as often as it does. Thanks so much!!

Really excited to be a part of what seems to be a very friendly and helpful forum! THANKS AGAIN!

gigoypotpot, welcome aboard mate. I'm glad more and more people are getting the 2008 and not afraid of the look of the car's new body style. I can't stop looking at mine.

I drove approx. 80 miles yesterday and I saw that I got a peak at 33mpg, constant 30mph. I realized the only time I got a number like that would be if I drive conservative. For instance anyone who knows the route 206, it has it's uphills and downhills, I would let it coast downhill and I would watch the mpg increase. I wouldn't drive as aggressively and now second day driving (I've got at least 40XX miles on the dial) my mpg is getting 27.9mpg.

thank you. i am officially obsessed to see how high i can get on the meter! thanks for all your great advice! i have been driving "grandma style" lately, shifting below 3000 rpm -- we'll see how much of an increase i'll get. thanks again.

Ive driven mine close to the same way when city driving sometimes and notice my mpg goes up to mid to high 30s(seen as high as 45 mpg) in the city when really babying the car, but as soon as it goes on the highway at 70 in cruise it will drop DOWN each mile I tach on down to about 29-30 mpg(with uphill driving dropping it a ton). Of course its hard to always drive really easy like that, but I get my days where I'm all about saving as much gas as I possibly can.

Also has anyone ever reset your trip as youre on the highway and it starts at about 13 mpg, then gradually goes up to about 27 in a 20 mile highway trip at 70 mph with cruise on? Ive tried it a few times just to see exactly what my highway mileage is but it doesnt seem to work the way I would think. A little over 13,000 miles on my car now, mostly highway miles.

Just another update . . . I am at 4200 miles on the odometer. Mpg are 30.0 during the week (90 of my 100 mile commute is highway) and it drops to 29.4-29.7 on the weekends with city driving, though I only drive about 20 miles on weekends.

I have reset the computer just before getting on the highway and gotten up to 38mpg; however, the 29.4-30.0 shown now is the cumulative total for the past 1200 miles. My own calculations (miles divided by gallons at the pump) support the trip computer.

Maybe I am a much more defensive driver than others getting lower mpg readings. I use 87 octane, obey the speed limit for my "city driving" and cruise control at 70mph on the highway. No jack rabbit starts, coast to slow down in traffic instead of brake, etc. In short, I drive every car I've owned like a 90 year-old!
