Default We Hear: Hyundai, Kia to Unveil 10-Speed Transmission by 2014

Quote:
It’s only been a few months since Hyundai unveiled its new eight-speed automatic transmission in the updated Genesis sedan. Now the automaker is wasting no time in improving on that gearbox by two cogs. According to our insider sources at Bloomberg, Hyundai and Kia are working together to develop a new 10-speed automatic transmission, which could be ready by 2014. Hyundai Motor Group president Park Seong Hyon said the new gearbox will likely be used in the Genesis and Equus sedans.
Earlier this year Hyundai introduced a new, eight-speed transmission that was developed in-house. The gearbox was installed in the updated 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan, which also received a tweaked 3.8-liter, direct-injected V-6-engine. The combination is good for 333 hp, 291 lb-ft of torque, and improved fuel efficiency: 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg compared to 18/27 in the outgoing V-6 and six-speed automatic powertrain. The ten-speed gearbox should improve numbers all around.
It will also be interesting how Hyundai and Kia’s competitors will follow. Lexus was the first automaker to offer an eight-speed automatic, which debuted in its flagship LS sedan. Audi also offers an eight-speed automatic (sourced from ZF) in a number of its vehicles including the A7 and A8. Will Hyundai and Kia be the first in the world with a 10-speed? Stay tuned to find out.

I grew up hearing about all my friends getting 21 speeds, never thought I'd have to hear it again!

You'll have to always have a passenger in the car if you want to use 6-10 because you wont be able to reach lol.

What I want to know is how smoothly this thing will shift. It's going to have to be almost imperceptable, otherwise the constant changing up and down would get extremely annoying. Also, how long are these things going to be?

Is this really necessary? Or even truly beneficial?

I'm sure that in the event that this does happen, the true mpg gain will be masked by the numerous other gas-saving technologies that they add on to it, such as the start-stop feature (which in some reports alone accounts for 5-6% mpg decrease), so those mpg improvements will be rolled into whatever the new transmission might get, no matter how small, so then all of a sudden people will think ten-speed transmissions are gas savers.

I'm curious how many gears it would drop if you are cruising in top gear and stomp on the gas to accelerate as quickly as possible to pass a car.

I recall reading that a big reason Porsche went with the 7 speed is that it shares the same gear set as the 7 speed PDK box, which saves them money.

I don't know why that slipped my mind. Is the 7-speed PDK also geared for mpg in seventh while top speed is reached in sixth?

I can't imagine this being a major factor in their decision. I mean the case and shafts are all different anyway, so we're only talking about the actual gears, and if they made a 6-speed manual, they could still use the lower 4-5 gears from the PDK. Besides, a 7-speed trans obviously needs an extra gear, synchros and an extra bearing, wiping out whatever they saved on not making a custom 6th gear for the manual.
