Default looking to take my 1997 legacy gt to the next level

so heres the deal. i have a 1997 legacy gt that was my first car. it now has 150k miles on the body, motor and trans. my brother is going to be driving soon and my mom has agreed to get him a car ($8k at most, i know lucky kid lucky kid). the legacy right now has a 2.5l motor in it with a blown head gasket and it was estimated at $2k max by precision tuning. my brother doesnt like cars like i do but im hear to help.

does anyone know what needs to be done to put in a 2.0l wrx motor with automatic trans?? new rear? im assuming a brake setup from a wrx? suspension? any help would be great. if all of this is possible for $8k or less, theres a good chance this will happen.

It is possible, however I don't know any of the complications with keeping the AT. USDM wrx's came with an AT optional, so I don't see a reason why you couldnt at worst swap that trans in. Call James at ECS, I'm almost positive he could set you up with a wrx motor swap for less than 5k, and a trans, brakes, and suspension for around 8ish. Don't quote me though, but I think thats about right.

They just did my 05wrx swap and I am extremely pleased. They do amazing work.

You could get by with just swapping the motor, exhaust, ECU/harness, and x-member for the cheapest route. Brake and suspension could come later. The WRX trans has a different diff ratio so you would need to swap the rear if you go that route.

See the sticky threads up top. $8k is a very reasonable budget.
