Girlfriend approved spring rates for 07 WRX (BC Coils)?
Hi all,
First I want to apologize if I'm asking the same redundant newb question here. I've tried to search but I wasn't able to nail down what I hope is a straight forward question. Just bought my first subie a 07 WRX Wagon. It came with BC coils and get this, 16kg swift springs? I've driven cars with coilovers but never in my life I've felt this kind of stiffness. Drove it around 350miles to get it back home and I swear I was getting air time whether on the st or highway! Wasn't sure if this is normal but I've read people talking about 8kg/10kg for tracking. 16kg must be ridiculous then. The previous owner probably did this because he was riding really really low. I was a mechanic before and feel comfortable swapping the springs. Is there a generally accepted kg rating and GF approved for daily driving an 07 WRX wagon? I won't be tracking this car ever and I'll be DD in the Bay Area. I've been reading too soft or too hard for 6kg/7kg... Is that what I'm looking for? Is there a general kg recommendation I should shoot for? I plan on calling local suspension tuners and will need their help with sourcing springs. After some research I've been getting confused with the spring length and ID measurements. I'll probably need a pro to help.

BCs aren't generally known for riding very well regardless of spring rate, but 16 kg/mm is pretty darn stiff. You may still not like the ride quality with a more convetional 8k/6k setup for GD chassis.
At the very least, I would double check the coilover's condition before swapping springs...would be an unfortunate waste of time to put nice new springs on blown struts. They've taken a pounding with those springs. - Andrew |

Thanks Andy! That's good to know. I figured it'd be night and day difference going from 16kg to 8kg but now I'm reconsidering. It's tough because I'd love to feel what 8kg feels like before committing the money and time getting those on... I might go lowering springs with factory struts. I'm actually looking for that right now. I appreciate that help... I've driven coilover cars before and love the tightness but as it is right now, this has to be track specific. It's quite stiff!

It would suck pretty bad on the track too.
Just keep in mind that any factory struts you find now are pretty old if you're looking used! But an OEM style strut is not a bad idea. - Andrew |

Damn 16kg is pretty ridiculous! But for most WRX the ideal set up is around 6kg or 7kg for daily driving. I would aim for 6kg if your gonna see more time on the streets. The only issue is you would need to have the coilovers re-valved to run the lower spring rates since the previous owner got them custom built for 16kg. You could get away with getting 2kg softer springs but anything else you would need to get the dampers rebuilt for your new spring rates. Have you considered just getting new coilovers?

Thanks guys! This helped a lot. I've ridden in cars with coilovers but I didn't relaly know what 16kg meant in the grand scheme of things.
I realize that I won't be tracking or even driving aggressively. I scored a set of stock strut assemblies so I finally just got them on and wow, it's so comfy. Fun? Not so much but coming from the coils, I'm quite happy. I appreciate you guys. I'll go sell these coils now. |

Random question, First expereince with the car is coils to strut. I noticed there were no camber bolts in the fronts at all but there were in the rear struts. The two bottom bolts holding it to the hub. It was in the upper one.
When I went back to struts, I put the cambers to the upper bolts of the front strut. On stock 2007 WRX, camber bolts should only be in the upper front strut mount correct? I'll need to replace these with OEM (It's an SPC bolt). Thanks! |
