2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E Coming With Bigger Batteries And More Range

Updated battery packs narrow the range gap.

Thanks to the Ford Mustang Mach-E Forum, we have access to the 2022 ordering guide, giving us a first glance at the changes in store for next year's model. The order books are already open at dealerships, and production will start at the plant in Mexico late in November.

The big news is the updated standard and extended range battery packs. The standard range battery is now 70 kWh, while the extended range is 91 kWh. That's up from 68 kWh and 88 kWh, respectively. The California Route 1 used to be available in rear-wheel-drive only, but Ford now offers an eAWD system. An update to the fast charging system is not mentioned, however.

Thanks to the updated battery packs, the Mach-E line-up offers more range across the board, which makes the Mach-E more competitive against VW's new ID.4. The EPA doesn't have estimated figures for the 2022 Mach-E yet, but the forum provides approximate figures. The SR AWD will jump from 211 to 217 miles, while the RWD model goes from 230 to 237 miles. The ER AWD is up from 270 miles to 279 miles, and the RWD model goes from 300 to 310 miles. The RWD California Route 1 jumps from 305 to 315 miles. As we've seen before many times, the Mach-E's claimed range figures don't tell the whole story.
Exterior-wise, the GT comes standard with a black painted roof, while new 19-inch gloss black wheels are an option for the base Select model. Iced Blue Silver metallic is now part of the color palette, while Carbonized Gray and Iconic Silver have been discontinued.

On the inside, only the California Route 1 benefits from a minor upgrade. It now comes with heated front row seats and a heated steering wheel as standard.
Ford also deleted the First Edition Package, as well as the Comfort and Appearance Package. An all-new Ice White Appearance Package for the Premium model adds several exterior and interior design features. On the outside, this package includes 19-inch aluminum wheels with white-painted pockets, Star White metallic tri-coat paint for the body, and Oxford White front door and Pony badges. The interior gains gloss while dashboard inserts, Light Space Gray door armrests, center armrests, and seats. On the steering wheel, you'll find a unique Oxford White Pony badge.

It seems many just call it a Mach-E. Using the Mustang name is bad. Using Mustang styling elements are fine

At least there's a screen in front of the steering wheel.

Having a large portrait screen isn't what's bad.. their poor utilization of it and their insistence on gluing the boomer knob onto it are what make it bad.

Probably too tight on entry for gun belts. The one I sat in felt fairly compact.

New York City Buys 184 Ford Mach-E Police Cars for Over $11 Million

This statement is bound to inflame some passions, but nonetheless remains technically true. After almost three decades, America finally has another official Ford Mustang police car, heir to the legendary Fox body SSP from the 1980s, in the form of the electric Ford Mustang Mach-E. And now we're about to see just how well it does in the real world, as New York City just placed an $11.5 million order for 184 Mach-E GT cruisers.

The city's Department of Citywide Administrative Services announced the news in a release on Wednesday, saying that the vehicles would be used by the NYPD, Department of Environmental Protection and various other local agencies. NYC runs the largest municipal fleet in the country at around 30,000, about a fifth of are NYPD "light duty enforcement" vehicles. Ergo, 184 vehicles is a drop in the bucket—but it's still a significant moment, not to mention a lot of cash

I used to live in Brooklyn & worked in midtown; this is a good move for the NYC Police depts. They need something that can idle a long time and crawl along with the lights on.

I rarely broke 30mph within the boroughs during normal day to day, and more often than not was creeping in bumper to bumper traffic (hence why I typically took public transport).

I think at the most extreme case (~3am when the streets are empty) I could get up to 60 or maybe 70 in a car, and I'm taking about on the express way between boroughs, not downtown; but the roads aren't that straight for very long and they are s*** so if you're not paying attention (or it's dark) you're saying goodbye to your wheels & tires.

On a bike it's a different story, but they don't chase down bikes.

I'm pretty sure I've touched 70mph down a back alley in Brooklyn.. in the back of a Black Car (Crown Vic). It was up there with some of the craziest track day rides I've done, but much smoother braking.

He suspected that maybe snow/ice had built up on some of the sensors, so he immediately got the vehicle cleaned to rule that out. He went on to say that

Already cleaned all sensors and the same message KEEP POPPING UP. They reset every 3/4 minutes and keep popping back up while driving. Dealer isn't open until Monday so im hoping someone has a reset method until them. Tryed the newest Snapon computer at my uncles shop to try and reset but it wont recognize the Mach-E. Keeps popping up as a 2021 Ford Edge with eco boost.

Then others started replying to the thread, saying they had encountered pretty much the same slew of errors, although they were doing slightly different things in their vehicles. The common denominator seems to be that they all turned traction control off and the vehicle’s wheels spun freely at higher-than-usual speeds and this could have upset the vehicle.

Ford replied to his original message on Friday, asking him for VIN and dealership information. He also took his Mach-E in to have it checked at his local dealer in Rhode Island and you can see the invoice he received attached below.



It looks like they reset all modules in the vehicle and pointed to the steering position sensor as the possible culprit for the slew of errors. Forum users also pointed to a recent software update that may be the root cause of this, because Mach-E owners have disabled traction control to either have fun or get get the vehicle unstuck before, and the vehicle did not do this.

Ford Mach-E Owner Gets $28K Repair Bill After Flatbed Tow Truck Operator Allegedly Damages Battery

The rise of modern electric vehicles is still a relatively new thing, meaning that there are a lot of new blind spots that people can run into. One such blind spot was allegedly found by a tow truck operator and cost a hefty sum, reports one Ford Mustang Mach-E owner.
The owner posted on macheforum.com that on a road trip from their home in Canada to their vacation place in Florida, a safety light came up on the dash telling them to “pull over safely.” They did so, called Ford Roadside Assistance, and a tow truck was dispatched.

The truck was a flatbed, which I usually assume is the safest way to tow a car, but it turns out that getting the car onto the truck can have unfortunate consequences if done incorrectly. The owner of the Mustang Mach-E reports that their battery was damaged as the car was pulled up onto the flatbed, leading to a $28,000 repair.

Another post on the same site suggests that this is a common issue for the Mach-E and indicates how to correctly tow one. It states that there is no tow hook on North American models but there are forward winch points ahead of the front wheels (see graphic above).

It warns, however, that there are also holes in the squared-off aluminum tubing under the rocker panels that are not meant to bear the weight of the vehicle. These can tear when a winch is attached to them and may ruin the whole battery, which costs $28,000 to replace and may exceed the tow operator’s liability insurance.

The post also warns that the rear axle is always locked when the vehicle is off, so the Mustang Mach-E should be put into neutral or Emergency Tow Mode (which is good for speeds of up 35 mph and distances of up to 50 miles [80 km]) when it’s being winched onto the flatbed.

In the original poster’s case, neither Ford nor the tow company nor the third-party company that operates Ford’s roadside assistance program would take responsibility for the battery damage, leaving the owner to lawyer up in order to deal with the issue. A Ford representative did get in touch with the owner through the forum, though, so this may get a happy ending after all.

I've never heard that Ford would cancel the Mach E. They recently came out and said to expect continuous improvement, rather than the typical model year changes most consumers expect (a 'la Tesla). Cooling improvements (which have been pointed out via many analyses) are coming very soon. Some guy from Ford mentioned that there was something like 3 times as many valves and tubes as really necessary.

Ford also just upgraded the EPA range estimates.

So far, I know 3 people with Mach E, 1 more with an order. One has the GT, other are premium. All 3 are sales reps with my company throwing on crazy mileage. So far, none have anything bad to report. 1 traded in his 3, the other pulled out from buying a 3 (gt owner) and the other never had an EV.

I mean, I’m sure there are owners who have had issues and being a new vehicle, wouldn’t surprise me.

If I was ready to get a new vehicle, I'd likely get a Mach E GT or premium. While I still think Tesla has better motor and batteries, the Mach E was more comfortable, quiet, and better ride. I'll likely end up dumping the truck in a year, year and half. Maybe supply chain issues will be better and we see more pricing competition.
