I was reading through the comments of one of the Japanese review videos, very popular one might I add, 160K views in 3 days, and they spoke with one of the designers or something “Mr. Goto”, who explained that the black parts (cladding) was part of improved aerodynamic design of the car. But in the comments everyone pretty much voices the opinion that it looks bad. There’s worry that over time these “resin” parts as the translator translates it, will fade and whiten. Everyone says it looks cheap and the car is too expensive as well. The wheel arches are SUV type which does not match what a sport sedan should be. Levorg front, BRZ back, commenters questioning what was the designer’s plan/direction with this model? Also comments about not wanting to buy it and keeping their current car and whether there will be a refresh in 2 years or so.
Therefore, basically the same sentiments as here lol even though there were comments of love here and there more than here. Interestingly, I agree with everything above while simultaneously thinking that red one looks pretty good. Therefore, honestly this means that Subaru almost has it down as far as design. I think that if they are hellbent on keeping the cladding, at least make it the texture of those smooth glossy ones that you find on the STI parts body kits. Like obviously it won’t be carbon fiber or something but the current plastic one truly looks so fregging cheap specially when the base model S4 is like 40K now. Also very interesting is they show a side by side comparison of the concept models and the final product and indeed the design cues did translate better than the previous generation concept and final car. So at least subaru is staying closer to the concept, but the execution just isn’t there so far. At this point the only reason keeping my attention is manual transmission. I wasn’t gonna pull the trigger on any car anytime soon anyway, maybe 2-3 years down the line. So maybe that works in my favor with improvements on the way.

The red bits on the S4 do nothing to improve the crappy looks. If anything it draws your eye to the ugliest parts

Can’t wait until these cars get the fenders and skirts wrapped. Then maybe SOA will change their mind for a 2024 refresh.

You have the options of making them all black, partially black/red, or the all red. Granted, I don’t know if that will be an option in NA. The configurations are available on the STI Japan site.

More rear end close up look, love the rear window wiper, too bad we are not getting them. More STi bits close up look, flexible draw stiffeners...

It reminds me of when Chevy would slap the SS badge on everything. Years later, they publicly marketed they were no longer so casually going to use the SS namesake and would go back to reserving it specifically for high performance vehicles. I guess now Subaru is going to throw the STI badge on everything.

scratches and chips are. you can't fix scratches or chips with compound or touch-up paint on textured plastic. |

Hah. Highlighting the cladding specifically is almost like making an excuse. "See???? Here's why we did it, so it's a good thing!"
That doesn't make sense, considering the parts would improve the aerodynamics of the car even if painted. The statement that should have followed is "while keeping the cost low." |

I have no doubt they work. Much like taking a ball point pen out of your glovebox makes your car lighter and therefore faster works.
the point is something does not have to be ugly as 10 pounds of hammered **** to be functional. |

Someone at Subaru of Japan made this decision. And the decision was to make the WRX look like the other vehicles on the lots, such as the Crosstek, and Outback. This employee, person in charge, WTF-ever, wants design similarity to other models in their lineup. From a marketing perspective they thing this is the correct way. And they are "marketing" it to folks and telling them it's right. It's the consumer's job to tell them to pound sand, not buy it, and tell them to change. |

I'll be telling them by not buying a 4th wrx. Ok, technically the second one was a legacy GT, but close enough.

If no one buys the new WRX then it'll just give Subaru reason to scrap the WRX and make a Crosstrek XT. It has to be their plan. I just posted in the Kona N thread pricing for it: $35k for a FWD, DCT performance CUV. Crosstrek XT would theoretically kill that thing.

I predict the 2022 wrx will sell well and even some of you haters will end up buying one. And then proceed to ruining it in your own special way.

Hatters gonna hat. I'm getting used to the looks of this car, it's still not a good looking car, but it's not atrocious. It will sell just fine to new buyers who just want turbo AWD and the WRX badge. I'd buy the wagon version with a manual if it came to the US, but I have zero interest in the sedan, especially with it's current appearance.
