resurrecting this thread here. read through and pretty confused on what works for which vehicles. Will this setup work on my 04TS wagon? also can someone point me in the direction of how to remove the dust shields. willing to drill out welds. not sure where they are. pics would be great. the sheilds are pushing my lower ebrake spring on each side into my ABS tone ring.

Can do the same with front brakes
I have a 2006 obs. I just put FRONT caliper brackets and rotors from a 04 legacy on. I already did the rear h6 mod. I believe the size change if from 276mm to 294mm. I didn't need to change my clips either because the pad shape was the same, d921, I believe.
Overall, my car has legacy brakes now which are designed for a 3500lb car instead of a 3000lb impreza. The car brakes like a sports car. Over all I think the new brackets cost me about $80 for the front (remanufactured). If you are changing rotors you might as well do this too. My friend was making fun of me for having larger disks in the back after doing the rear first. So I did this, I would imaging that my setup is good enough for the track even though I only drive it on the street. Much safer in unpredictable highway traffic. |

Hoping some people are still checking this thread and can give me some thoughts.
I ended up doing this upgrade about two years ago. I ordered the brackets and rotors from advance auto at the time. Ordered d770 pads. I did the install and everything seemed fine. Fast forward to today. This winter I noticed my rear rotors were getting grooved and thought hmmm, ill have to change those this spring, so I ordered new h6 rotors and another set of d770 pads. I put them on this past weekend and had a hell of a time. Also it appears that the old pads were not moving well. the pad wear was uneven and the slide pins were not moving well at all. I have a feeling that the pads were stuck in the bracket and very difficult/impossible for the caliper to push and this cause additional heat, debris and gunk build up in the sliders. I ordered wagner pads from rock auto and they came with clips but the pads would not go in. they seemed to tall. I ground down the tabs a little on the bench grinder and tried gain. I was able to tap them in with my socket but they barely move. Seemed wrong. the clips seem to fit ok, theres a little gap on the corners but it doesnt seem like theyre too narrow or not flush at the bottom of the bracket so im not sure if thats the issue. After reading every thread on h6 upgrades. I cant tell if i should be using a different set of pads - seems like that only applies to 04+ wrx owners because they have a different caliper and pad. So i think i have the correct hardware but am considering going back to the stock bracket rotors and pads. Any thoughts on this? 2nd question is regarding the ebrake hardware with the h6 rotors. my ebrake on both sides is toast. I ordered new shoes and spring kit for both sides. I ordered based on the stock rotors, should i have gotten e brake shoes and spring kit for an h6?? TIA |

The best person to talk to about the upgrade is Ken @ KNS Brakes. He has always been able to give me correct parts for my H6 setup.
For the ebrake, you can use the the stock setup... the inner dia is the same. I believe the only rotor that had a different inner dia was the STi rotors (but my research on this is about 5 years out of date... other 5x114 rotors Subie has know may also have the different inner dia). |

I currently have H6 brackets 290mm rotors and d770 pads. I using the brake clips that came with the D770 pads. Something is not right with this setup. The pads barely fit into the bracket I end up having to smash them in with a ratchet or Hammer. I've tried grinding down the tops of the tabs on the brake pads a little bit but they still don't fit they're too tall and too wide. If I take the clips out altogether the pads fit in there fine but there's a little bit of slop. They clearly need some set of clips. This morning I went to AutoZone and looked at the d1004 pads. I brought my bracket with me. Those pads definitely don't fit in this bracket. They're too tall. I then tried taking the clips from the stock OEM bracket and putting them in my H6 bracket. However those clips are designed for the 1004 pads. The clips are too narrow and don't fit the brake tabs of the d770 pass. The only other possibility is that there's another pair of clips that would fit in my bracket and accommodate the d77 pads better than the ones that came with them. That seems unlikely though. Can somebody point me in the direction of the correct Hardware? Can I grind down the d77 pads a little bit more on the tops and decides to get them fit in the current brake Clips? This is also the same setup that I was running for the last year and this did not work well. My rotors were grooved in the pads were clearly not moving in and out very well at all. They showed uneven wear and we're clearly stuck in the bracket to some extent. Thoughts??? This is getting pretty frustrating. Update. Finally got it finished. After I ruled out incorrect Hardware by checking the D 1004 pads and the other d1004 Clips I started focusing on the bracket itself. I took it inside and use the Dremel with a cutting wheel and ground out all of the rust was built up in the bottom and top of the bracket where the clips it. I got it down to the bare metal and then put the clips back in much better they now sit flush at the bottom and had a little bit more clearance. This allowed the pads to go in and fit nicely without any more interference. Last edited by inspectorgadget; 04-14-2018 at 04:53 PM. |
