Default JDM STi Steering Rack on a 02 WRX?

can it be done? i have to replace my steering rack and would like to put an sti one in there because i know they are slightly more responsive, my question is this: Are there going to be any fitment issues with a JDM STi rack? I know the JDM cars are rhd but does that have any bearing on the steering rack?

Um... yeah, not so much. The mounting for the steering column is on the right. The USDM should fit, others can confirm

The steering gear mounting system changed in '05. You can use a 2004 USDM STI rack with your current crossmember. AFAIK it should be a direct swap.

so the 2005 and above STi's steering racks are not able to fit directly on the MY02-03 WRX... does anyone know what extra steps would need to be taken in order for it to be usable on my car? Thanks in advance for any further info...

you'd need a new crossmember to use an 05+ rack.

...and there's no way to use a JDM rack of any type in your car (unless you are also going to convert to RHD that is).

I recently put in an 06 sti rack into my 02 wrx. As others have posted, all it requires is the matching crossmember. I purchased my rack already attached to the crossmember. So, all I had to do was unbolt the subframe, remove the sway bar, then drop the crossmember with the rack attached. Pop in the new crossmember with rack attached and you're good.
