Default Timing/Knock Control

I am not sure what is necessary for timing control for my application. I realize that a JS safeguard is a knock safety, and an ITC can change the timing map. However, how necessary is it? Is the factory Timing map that far off, that you HAVE to have one?

Reason i ask is this. My injectors will be here this week. I have dreams of hitting 10-14 PSI relatively soon. FOr those who dont know:

Setup:
EJ22na w/ 8:1 internals, O-Ringed.
SAFC, WRX fuel pump, EJ22t injectors, rails, FPR
WRX Turbo Componants.

Main question, can i see 14 PSI w/ my setup, but w/o timing control?

Not likely. Ditch the SAFC for an E-Manage and J&S or buy a Unichip and have it custom tuned. Both will meet your needs but the E-manage is easily tuned on the street and the Unichip must be tuned on a dyno.

As for your stock timing, the 2.2 is less aggressive than the RS but not designed for positive manifold pressure. Also, the 2.2 N/A block is still open deck... stronger than the 2.5, yes, 2.0 nope. Be very careful w/ your ultimate power goals, you can make big big power but not w/ piggybacks... you're going to get into standalone territory.

is emanage a piggy back? Also, why do i need a JS safeguard and E-Manage? Can't e-manage pull timing?

Also, for the time being, do you think i can do 10 PSI or so w/ my current setup...??? I am only running 4psi right now, but as soon as i get the ej22t injectors, i would like to bump it up a bit.

The E-Manage is a piggyback but has no knock control... hense the J&S. Its a safety thing, I'm not running a J&S and have been problem free, however I'm running a tiny turbo that doesn't flow that many cfms. The E-manage will allow you to adjust base timing based on MAF/MAP X RPM (16x16 resolution, like all the eman maps... 256 cells/map) but not pull timing in the event of knock. Although your car does have a knock sensor it isn't designed for a turbo, it can be a little overactive at times but it doesn't respond fast enough to prevent castrophe under boost. I wouldn't recomend running even 10psi on the stock timing, 8:1 c/r or not... the stock ignition system was just not designed for boost.

I run a J&S on top of a Greddy E-manage. Good safety margin even at 10psi.
