Default Considering move to Redondo Beach

Hello all. This is not a Subaru question, but I was hoping that you guys could help me out.

I currently live in Michigan, in the college town of Ann Arbor. For career reasons, I am considering a move to Redondo Beach. I have never lived in California. I have many friends in the San Francisco area (which I like), but I understand that SoCal is a very different place.

First of all, I am familiar with the real estate situation, so no need to scare me up about that! Second of all, I am a family man. I have a 3 year old. I value:

1) quiet family neighborhoods, where forgetting to lock your front door is not cause for alarm
2) shopping malls (I am originally from NJ!)
3) parks with playgrounds
4) access to wide resources for unanticipated needs (by this, I mean for example the ability to fulfill a sudden interest in the violin, yoga, or the sudden need to find a medical specialist in blood parasites.)

Although I probably would not like to admit it, I probably do fit into the yuppie stereotype, except that I have a Scooby instead of a Bimmer. Note, though, that the neighbor to my right has a BMW M3 and Honda minivan and the neighbor to my left has a BMW 325 convertible. 99% of the houses are occupied by families with 2.5 kids and most of them are engineers in the auto industry, researchers for Pfizer, or work for the University of Michigan. So that's the kind of neighborhood I am used to living in.

Will I like it in Redondo Beach? What makes Redondo tick?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Hahahah, I like these questions.....

summary: IF you value family relations Id suggest you STAY WHERE YOU ARE! This is what'll happen: You'll move to redondo beach and you will be renting.....(only if you're suckered in by whoever hires you and gives you a mere standard +10% raise).....A couple months after that your beloved wife will have changed her mentality.....she'll be thinking that she, even if shes a mother, can go and hang out at the hermosa beach pier like when she was SINGLE.....she'll make friends with women that think like this too.....sooner or later she'll be suckered into wanting to be SINGLE AGAIN and files for DIVORCE in CALIFORNIA...at this point YOU ARE T_O_A_S_T!!!!!

Now you will have to work your ass off, sell your subie, drive a piece of shieeet car and live in a piece of shieeet place ONLY because of stupid CALIFORNIA laws. She will want to HAVE YOUR PAYCHECK, MOST OF IT and the judge WILL RULE IN HER FAVOR!

******** CHILD SUPPORT MAN!!!!!! *********

..... do your family a favor and dont come to California.

this is just the SAD TRUTH

Default well...

Redondo is nice. You might wanna look into Manhattan Beach which is right next to Redondo and Hermosa. I live in El Segundo which is nice if you don't mind LAX or the Refinery. PM me and I'll even send you the local papers from here. hope I can help you out.

Don't worry about it. It's a great move. I lived in Redondo Beach all my life and it's a pretty cool place. It will definitely have everything you want. You will also be happy that you can raise your kid in a diverse environment. It's really a beach city, so how bad can that be. JB1 is right, if you are a yuppie, look into Hermosa or Manhattan, or even Torrance. Good luck with the move. Yeah it's very expensive out here, but it's the place to be.

Please tell me you're coming out here to check it out before you make plans to move here. ive known too many people that move to a state that they've never been to before. That aside, you'll love it.

Forget leaving doors unlocked!
I don't wanna scare you but there are way too many cases where criminals made their way into someone's house thru unlocked doors or windows!

Redondo Beach is nice - weather is great - property cost is exorbitant - I'd say you need a $100,000 + income to own a house and maybe $50,000 + to rent a standard apartment - this is just my approximation based on how expensive real state has become in So Cal!

Redondo Beach is part of a huge metropolitan area : Los Angeles and as such is subject to ALL the problems that come with large cities : traffic is really bad if you need to travel outside of the immediate area during the workweek's rush hours. Property is expensive. More people = more chances of running into wackos.

Good suggestion already given here - checkout the place in person first before making this very important decision of moving - some people love it here yet others can't stand it!

People looking for more suburban - quiet - safe - pleasant place to live usually like the gated communities in Orange County (Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, etc ....) so perhaps you should look into those cities....

Hope you find the suggestions we've given you and make a decision you can live by :-)

Well, he did say forget to lock the door, not deliberately leave it unlocked. But your point is well-taken: I don't think there's an ungated beach community in Southern/Central California (even Cambria) where accidentaly leaving a door unlocked is NO cause for concern.

Thank you all. Yes, I do plan on visiting. With this thread, I was hoping, if nothing else, to get some ideas of what to visit, look at, and think about when I do visit. This is very helpful, so keep it coming!

sherifx - Yes, I have the unfortunate privelage of knowing JC and Alissa

I grew up outside of Detroit in Ferndale, went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and grad, and then moved out here. I work in El Segundo.

Redondo is nice. There are parks around. The diversity of activities you could pick up is staggering. I've never lived anyplace where leaving the door unlocked isn't a concern, but realistically Redondo is safe enough that you could leave it unlocked while you're home during the day - you could probably do so at night as well, but that's just tempting fate. Do you currently live around Pfizer near North Campus? I wouldn't say things are too different in Redondo, perhaps a little less safe, but not much.

What I miss about Ann Arbor is the outdoors, in particular the Arboretum. You have to go a bit further to get away here, BUT, it's far more spectacular when you do. There are twisty mountain roads and canyons here that make Huron River Drive look like a crappy go-kart track. When I head out and see mountains (come winter they'll be snow-capped) and the ocean, I don't miss the Arb as much.

Ski slopes are 1.5 hours away. I'm not talking Pine Knob. We're talking skiing at 8K feet, and that's the crappy skiing. If you want to drive 5 hours, you've got some of the best skiing anywhere at Tahoe. Vegas is 4 hours away. San Diego is 2 hours away. Palm Springs and Santa Barbara 1.5 hours. It's very hard for me to imagine living anyplace else.

Why, yes I do! Thanks for your input, Hagbeard. I may PM you and sherifx with some more specific questions later, since you both know where I am coming from.

Do you by any chance work for one of the defense firms?

Orson - my wiring/electronic guru. Would be cool to have you out here and hook up finally! And just think, you will add to the life expectancy of your car because you don't have all that snow/salt/rust!

But SoCal, is definitely not the midwest. However I've been seeing just tons of Illinois plates around my place lately. So there must be some attraction to you rust belt folk. You won't have the lush thick tree lined streets, but you will have the nice beaches and PCH drives. More hills here means more vistas, so you have a general sense of wide open space, despite the fact that its all been built up in the city proper. Real wide open space is just an hours drive away into the desert. That's something that I noticed when first moving to the midwest, I felt a wee bit claustrophobic because (coming from colorado) I couldn't see farther than two blocks because of all them damn trees! In colorado, it seemed like you could always just see for miles and miles.

Thanks again to everyone! I'll be visiting the area around October 8-10. I'll be quite busy scoping out the parks, schools, shopping areas, and general community centers, and visiting with a couple of old friends there. If I see any Subies, I'll try to run you down to say hello!

Arnie - good to run into you again! If there is one thing that is definitely good about Socal, it's got to be the cool scoobies and I'll have to check out yours. I can count the number of cool subies around Detroit on one hand.
