Default full vinyl car wrapping - who has done it? how hard is it to do? any issues removing?

since i work as a snowboard sales rep and i am constantly in the mountains and on the road for work my subies paint jobs get destroyed insanely fast.

im looking at getting the new forester wrapped to double as advertisement for the brands that i do, but also to protect the thin paint job.

m looking to do a full matte black wrap and in the winter i will add high glos logo's for the snow brands i do.

any info i should look into? who has done this or had it done?

pro's and con's?

i

Are you getting paid to represent the brands you use? If not, why go through the hassle of putting all that vinyl on your car.

I don't have any first hand experience with it, but my buddy had his Corvette wrapped in matte black vinyl. On a corvette it looked very sleek, well done. On a Subie, I don't know if the final outcome would look as sleek or look like some kid spray painted it matte black (which I've seen done to a Honda Civic).

I don't know why your friend would do that to a Corvette.

Corvettes have really nice paint.

I've done it and there is a learning curve. You will not be good at it the first time you try it unless you do it with someone who has done it 10 times before. You will get it done but a big bag of secret tricks will make it look professional. I costs over 5 thousand dollars so unless someone is paying you for it, it will not make financial cents. Get a clear bra 3M of Venture Shield. Less than one thousand dollars and it helps a lot on all the fronts ie: hood front bumper, rear of fenders, rear view mirrors. It will peel off with no damage and then you spend 3-4 days with GooF Off removing the residue. Another not so fun job.

My dad just had his vette wrapped in clear plastic (well, the hood, fenders, quarters and the door-sills, vents etc). The whole thing was pretty expensive, but the guy who did it did an amazing job--can't even see the seams.

He's all the way up here in WA, but I can see if the guy knows of any reputable shops down that way that can do the same? I want to say it was like 4-5 grand, but it's safe to wax and has (so far) kept the paint very nice. He had it on his 09 Z06 before trading it in, and that held up very well.

I've done wraps for 8 years now. If you don't know what your doing you can waste a hell of a lot of money in material real fast....that being said it's not that tough. All you do i monitor your slack in the material the entire time...make sure you keep the slack moving in the same direction over the entire panel. If you double cross your self in other words squeege one side then the other a leave a bunch of slack in the middle your hosed.

Foresters are a easy wrap I actually just wrapped one for a local speed shop here in Denver took me and a buddy roughly 3 hours. But that was with a comply air release material...straight vinyl with no air release is a much larger pain in the ass.

Also removal will leave adhesive everywhere especially roofs, hoods and anywhere that is a flat surface that constantly bakes in the sun. And I have seen and removed paint with vinyl before..it does happen. Usually with the more aggressive comply materials with an adhesive promoter but straight vinyl is a safe bet not to remove paint or clear coat upon removal. As far as price your probably looking roughly 8-900 in just material cost with no laminate...laminate makes the material last longer but ups the cost of it because it has to be laid onto the material and is not cheap.

These are the prices I was quoted for my 04 STi, just yesterday by J's Graphics. He's a Vendor here.

For just the vinyl, you'd be looking at $350 picked up, for a 5'x75' roll, which is enough to do the whole car + extra in case you mess up or you want to use for practice, etc.

For him to do the wrap himself:
For a full car wrap, you're looking at around $2.75k for an STI.

There are other vendors on here like Lamin-X, they have porous material. There are also videos up on youtube that help in the DIY process.

Im in the process of wrapping my car right now, the vinyl is alot of fun to work with and not as hard as anticipated. Just take ur time and research youtube vids to get a better understanding of the process.

That's roughly 4.50 a foot with no laminate. That's not a terrible price..hes definitely not poking your eyes out.

is the laminate going to be necessary? i figured that for matte black it wouldn't be too important

Unlaminated weathers faster and can fade quicker. Depends on how long you want it to last

I'd do it, if it came in a WRB color.

Isn't laminate used for dry application...and peeled off once done?
Or is it a color added to white vinyl?

I see a few s0-cal people in this thread...looking like we need a "vinyl day".
