Default Autumn Drive

We have decided - at meetings and over the net - to have an Autumn Drive.
Saturday 3rd November

Galena & Surroundings

ITINERARY

Schaumburg
Thomson Causeway Recreation Area
Savanna (on Mississippi)
Mississippi Palissades State Park
Long Hollow Scenic Overlook
Galena
Scales Mound
Apple River Canyon State Park
Schaumburg

330 miles

We have to decide if we do a picnic at say Long Hollow Scenic Overlook or we have lunch at some place in Galena. This is what is the next vote ! I would just vote for eating in Galena because this way we do not carry much with us and we can invade Galena and get whatever we want. Galena is a small town - we park the Subarus "down town" and visit it by foot and eat whatever pleases us. We can't expect to all like the same food...Besides, we should spread our "business" around town. We could also go to the sky course and see which Subaru can climb it :-)

Other things that MAY be incorporated depending on what people want. Here's a suggestion
http://www.greatriverroad-illinois.org/sightseeing.htm
but I think we have plenty to cover and plenty of opportunities for great shots.

DETAILS WILL FOLLOW

It will be an all day event - meaning leaving no later than 7:30 - 8:00 from a central location (Schaumburg), a healthy 2-3 hour drive, then sightseeing, picnic, nature, trails, games etc followed by a drive back. I am aiming for a return to Chicago no later than 22:00 for most of us. Meaning leaving Galena no later than 1900 hours Also assume 250-350 miles of driving.

It will be a motorcade. Which means there will be rules - such as the order in the convoy, speed limits, interdiction of useless, unnecessary and reckless displays of horsepower. You call it. For that - there will be additional notes in the reserved spaces. "John Wayne" personalities need not apply.

RULES & REGULATIONS

From the get-go, if you participate in this autumn drive, it is assumed you have read, understood and agreed to the rules and regulations listed below. In no specific order, here they are:

1) Absolutely NO useless, stupid, unnecessary display of horsepower - whether on the road or in the parking lots. Meaning: no scoobynuts, no accelerations, no exhaust sounds and whatever else fancies your mind. This isn't the time and place for "mine is thicker and longer than yours".

2) By and large, the posted speed limits will be obeyed

3) The running order in the motorcade will be assigned for the most part via a lottery system and will be respected for the entire length of the trip. Depending on the number of attendees, I may assign a few cars for different tasks - such as recon and caboose but the bulk of us will be assigned a running order based on your very own luck. You pull a piece of paper out of a hat. This way we keep everyone happy. I will also try to judiciously place GPS cars at regular intervals in case we do get split up at some intersection. But for that we also have a front and tail end car with radios so we know when to slow down or pull to the right.

4) Recon and Caboose - if it is just 4-5 cars going - then no need for that. If we end up having 10 cars or more...I will assign a (several) recon car and a caboose car - always in radio contact with each other and with the rest of us. Their purpose is to make sure there aren't "enemies" up the road or pacing us. These people should have detectors and navigation and definitely will be chosen from among those who have proven leadership in the past.

5) Walkie Talkies. I recently went to Indiana with a bunch of friends and we all kept in radio contact via walkie-talkies. They are awesome. If there is anything up the road that you may wish to warn fellow drivers, I tell you dialing up the number will take far too long and you can only call one other person - NOT the entire crew. If any of you have walkie talkies, please bring them, charged and with spare batteries.

6) Common Sense : Please make sure you dress up accordingly - warm clothes but in layers. Make sure you have a few snacks and your favorite energy drinks. Perhaps a blanket to put on the grass and sit down when you cuddle up your GT or STI neighbor. Bring along whateevr medications you need. Whatever floats your boat - whatever you think you need.

7) Car Care: Make sure the car that you bring along for the ride is in good mechanical condition. No time for boost leaks diagnosis and tire inflation. Make sure you show up with a full tank of gas.

8) Following every hour or so of driving we will take a 5-10 min break for pitstops.

9) Camera & video I know some of us are excellent with cameras and video recordings. No need to drop names, but please set up your ride accordingly if you are coming along. We should grab some video of this trip - while on the road and stationary - and we will make sure when we get over there in some hilly, wooded terrain, we will take pix that will make the So-Cal club envious.

This is copied pretty much word for word from legacygt.com as we are the ones organizing it. We decided to extend the invite to the rest of the subaru community. So post if you are interested in coming and your more then welcome. The more subies the better.

Hi Guys,

I am the organizer of this event, known in our GT circles as the Meet Nazi.

I wanna reassure you that this event will be organized; nothing will be happenstance and I will make sure the event does not get derailed.

I would like to extend my invitation to anyone in the Midwest Chapter of NASIOC to join us in this autumn drive. Our respective clubs rarely get together - except from the occasional Schaumburg area meets and or P&L event or some track days. I think we can foster mutual friendship, respect, knowledge and greater appreciation for our cars by having from time to time common events (we should have always have them, but we all know how these things go).

We have already over 10 people from our boards (we"re a small group, you know :-( ) having expressed commitment and many more interested but unable to commit a month ahead .

The itinerary was presented - I will try and add a screen shot here as well later on. I will post updates here as well.

One thing I insist on is just the basic understanding that this is a leisure event, for fun, friendship and sightseeing and I absolutely do NOT want this to become a "contest" of any sorts.

Beyond that, feel free to drop me a line here or on the GT boards - but I will make sure everything of importance posted there will be updated here as well.

The only thing likely to change is - if a sufficient number of people from Wisconsin/Iowa are willing to attend we may run this itinerary in reverse. Which I doubt :-)

If you'd ever been out at an event like this, you'd understand the need to keep the locks on things. The typical happening of underregulated events is that the frontrunners disrupt things (because they're the fastest/most aggressive) and everyone else gets pulled over, ticketed, etc because of it.

I applaud the regulations and think they definitely have their place, especially when you open up the invites to a much more diverse crowd, much more likely to have the young and stupid interested (ok... old and stupid is possible, too).

Not saying I disagree, I just think it's funny that it's managed down to the position every car has in the convoy. I've seen various local meets go awry, meets that weren't vehicle specific. One meet in particular, half the convoy got split up and didn't know where the other half was going, and then someone got the bright idea to stop the entire convoy of 50 or so cars at a tiny gas station, inundating the parking lot. Then of course during the middle of the cruise, they decided to stage impromptu drag races *while* the cruise was ongoing.

But yeah, rules are needed, I agree.

Thank you for your approval.

Regulations have their place, even when dealing with a small and homogeneous crowd. Such "drives" have to be tightly regulated from within in order to avoid "outside" regulation. That is why I announced that I will take the liberty of appointing several key people to assist running this and have listed rules. I have a few other things in mind - not sure how aggressive I want to be in regulating this right now. I respect everyone's individual wishes and certainly recognize a need - among the sports car crowd of showing off your ride and skills - BUT this is precisely what I will work hard to avoid: being a danger to ourselves and to others on the road and off the road. What you do outside of this event is your choice, but I know if given a choice, all of us would rather take part in a well organized, regulated event rather than some ad-hoc meet and drive.

Do I micromanage much ? It is a professional flaw. But striving for a professional "meet", I have to do it - espec. as I opened up the invite to people that I may know more by "face" than by personality.

See, this is precisely what I want to avoid. I want to make sure GPS cars are spread thru-out the convoy - all the way down to having them marked with a # and G (painter's blue tape) so in case we break up, people know who to follow. That is why I will have a tail end with radio and GPS to pick up the stragglers.

Impromptu races ? I will be the first to stop the convoy (or at least those of us mature enough to disapprove upon this behavior), copy down the license plate and pending behavior of those involved, decide as a group what to do. Ostracism can go a long way. Or phonecalls.

Listen, I am not Margaret Thatcher - and I do not rule with an Iron Fist and i do not always a model driver. But much as I pride myself in being Michael Schumacher's biggest fan in the galaxy, I do not pretend I am him on the road and I dislike asshats.

Bottom line is, I want this event regulated and I know we can have fun as a large group even if we do not all know each other. If you want to enjoy the hopefully autumn weather (by then, since now it seems more like July outside) and you can follow some simple common sense rules...come play with us. We will make beautiful turbocharged boxer music together.

I'm not above bombing down a good backroad or even having a stoplight encounter given proper conditions but in a group like this you MUST have solid rules or stuff gets out of hand REALLY fast. Strict and organized fun FTW!!

My friend, I do not think we are open for voting anymore.

This a joint MSOWC - Chicagoland Legacy GT outing.

I do not think we have a list of who is going. Yet. On the Legacy boards we have some 8 people having voted already and some 6-7 others who either by word of mouth or by having participated in the discussion have indicated their participation. Then we have a couple others who cannot commit almost a month ahead.

On this board, there are a number of people who have expressed interest, around 7 or so if I am not mistaken.

This is not a Subaru exclusive drive - just the bulk. Definitely you may bring your significant others along.

Should you invite your friends - that is fine as long as you make them aware of the rules and regulations which are listed in the first 2 entries on this topic and which yourselves agree to follow.

If you guys have an upcoming meet and if those of you who are interested in this autumn drive are going to attend, I would like to come along briefly, to just meet you face to face before we regroup the morning of 3rd November. Just send me a PM.
