Default Subaru NAV complaints?

I'm a Tribeca owner peeved about Version 1.1 being outdated. We are using 2003/2004 maps and Subaru is making all owners pay for the updated Version 2.0 Disk which includes the 2005/2006 data.

For those Subaru owners who have an OEM nav unit, I have received a specific website we can all use to complain about their unit, post where it is inaccurate, and in general bombard them w/ your comments about their retarded Nav unit.

http://www.mysubaru.kenwoodusa.com/

I have a list of areas that I will be emailing them that are NOT listed on the 1.1 maps. I urge everyone to do the same. Their site says a new map will be available early 2008 as well, so here's your chance to ensure that its fully updated.

I think it is pretty common to have to pay for updated versions of the NAV DVD. Seems rough on us, but it isn't free to make.

EDIT: Ok I see you have a 2007 and don't even have a 2007 map..... That is pretty bad....

This is actually quite common and is dependant on when your vehicle and radio were put in production. But, to tell you the truth, just because the map is older does not mean that it is any worse than what you have now. If you live in an area that has no new data, and the areas of travel have no new data, or very little. It has no direct negative affect on you that the map data is old. Do you know if the Subaru nav system is using NAVTEQ or TELEATLAS maps? If you do, you can go to their websites and check in your area how many new additions were included.

This is going to be a never ending battle for owners with navigation systems. Get used to it, and be thankful that they are even supporting your system at all, because they won't be in 4 or 5 years from now.

Dude...buy a lexus. I'm not joking either...Both my father and step mothers Lexus's have been updated for free. And to top it off you'd think it was a military unit. I'm in the process of building a brand new house and a brand new street. When my father came to visit it told me the house address when he was parked in my drive way....which blew my mind because its on a corner and I had the decision of which road I wanted to live off of and I only decided about 8 months ago....QUITE impressive IMO...

My buddies LGT doesnt even list the street thats been there for 5 years, let alone my street. I'm assuming he has the older software....

But overall he says it works great. Because it will get him in the area he needs to be. Of course it would be nice to be like my fathers lexus and put you in the driveway you need to be in....

I have an aftermarket Avic-N1 that I registered with Pioneer. Now I am sent the new DVD Maps when they become available. This may not help you right now but it is something to remember for future reference.

Heh, our 2000 Odyssey came with some horridly outdated maps. It's that little money game they play.

Aftermarket might look good in the Outback or Legacy..but if anyone has bothered to look at a Tribeca interior.....well. There really is no decent place to put an AVIC-N1 w/o ruining the beautiful interior. Having been in the import tuning business for the past 6 years, I'm well aware of the aftermarket possiblities, however, Subaru certainly did all they could to prevent anyone from putting in a decent aftermarket system and still make it look good w/ their interior.

If I had 10k more, getting a similarly equipped Lexus RX would be great. But I picked up my 07 Tribeca loaded for about 33k which is a steal in my book

The sad truth is....because Subaru is new to the whole Nav game. I'm convinced that Kenwood played a cruel joke and cheated Subaru by selling them substandard non-selling units to put as OEM. Hopefully they wake up and smell the coffee soon, because if they want to compete in the luxo market with the Tribeca, they better fix their nav units ASAP. The RDX and CX-7 and CX-9 Nav units are light-years ahead of the Tribeca's.

Yes, I meant to say at no cost I am sent the new DVD's. I was just using my system as an example of a navigation system getting the new DVD's once registered. I don't see why it wouldn't apply to other systems. Just something to keep in mind.

I do not condone piracy in any way *uhhh* but a little searching on the internet can probably find you the dvd download. Then all you have to do is burn it and install it.

Well, apparently you have to cite specific areas of where Ver 1.1 is not adequate and if you can justify the upgrade, they will send you one
Update disks are normally $238. http://store.kenwoodusa.com/subaru/

I mentioned that the NAV units of the other cars are light-years ahead. I certainly don't think the cars themselves are light years ahead. Except for them having HID, I find the Tribeca quite competitive. W/ the 08's new stronger torque engine, I think Subaru will have quite a competitor.

Subaru's AWD is still superior to the systems from Mazda and Acura, fit and finish are equal to the RDX and CX-7's and CX-9's. Tribeca's reliability has been great vs. Acura and Mazda's as yet unknown reliability. Price-wise for a 7-passenger vehicle it has the others beat. RDX is simply too small to be useful for a family with kids. CX-7 has the same size issue. CX-9 boosts its pricing to MDX levels on the fully-loaded version thereby pricing themselves out of competition unless you get a dealer willing to cut the pricing down.

After comparing and test-driving numerous xover SUV's, the Tribeca won based its winning interior, ride, space, and value for the money. We got an 07 using their huge rebates so it was a value winner.

Although my wife hates it when I start testing other cars after we just purchased one, the Hyundai Veracruz is another one to watch for. I think Hyundai will give everyone a run for their money and with their added 10 year/100,000 warranty, they extremely competitive. Their engines are getting more and more refined w/ each iteration and their fit and finish have improved dramatically over the past 2 years alone. They do have that "cheapness" reputation based on their early years so if they want to offer that new Lexus killer sedan next year, they might want to consider forming a new luxury brand name to go w/ that Lexus-killer sedan.

At least w/ the 08 Tribeca, Subaru retains loyal scooby fans who now have families to fill up the Tribeca's. Hopefully their 3rd quarter sales will reflect a rapid increase in Tribeca sales.

Subaru's reply to my request for a Ver. 2.0 Nav update:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your reply! I can certainly appreciate your point of view
as it relates to the Navigation System updates. As a company, we have
been very liberal in providing updates to our customers. Subaru like
other manufacturers does charge for these updates. When it comes to OEM
systems, aside from Honda, Subaru updates are the least expensive in
cost. Still, we must be selective and evalute each customers situation
on a case-by-case basis, as every situation is different.

Based on the specific concerns you have reported to us, I feel that a
complimentary upgrade to you is appropriate. I would be happy to submit
this request on your behalf. The updated discs will me sent to you at
the address that you provided with your original message.

As it relates to your vehicle production date, there are quite a few
steps between the completion of production to the time it reaches its
intended dealer and eventually is sold. An early production date should
not be a cause for concern.

I hope this goodwill gesture assures you of our concern for you as a
Subaru owner. Be sure to send the specific errors you outlined directly
to Kenwood where they can apply them to future updates. I cannot advise
as to whether all or any of these areas have been updated for the 2.0
version.

Please do not hesitate to reply back with any further comments,
questions, or thoughts. I am glad I was able to fulfill your request
and be of assistance to you.

Best Regards,

Samir Hasan

Very nice, got it free! That $238 for a DVD seems awfully expensive, I'm thinking $50 would be more appropriate. For ~$200, you can buy a whole new nav system (not in dash, of course, but still), fer cryin' out loud! I just looked at www.garmin.com, and map updates are about $75 there, much better.
