Question 1999 2.5RS Engine Options

I have a 1999 2.5RS and I'm looking at replacing the engine. I used to have high aspirations to do a big sti swap, but time is a big issue right now and I'd like to just be able to do a simple replacement.

What engines (or from which year/model) can I put in with minimal work? Preferably a direct fit, without significant re-wiring?

I tried searching but got a heap of false positives

Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming "simple replacement" means you just want to replace the existing EJ25 with another, healthy EJ25? If so, the '99-05 shortblocks are all the same. I think for the most part the longblocks are the same, too, so really all you would need to do is transfer your intake manifold and wiring harness over onto the new longblock and call it a day.

Yeah, so I can get an EJ25 from an Impreza 05 and be alright? Is that the EJ251? I pulled out my engine already, and have all the part so the intake manifold won't be a problem.

How do I find out which models have longblocks vs shortblocks?

Longblock means a shortblock with the heads on it. A shortblock is the engine with no heads. Hope that makes sense.
