Default Anyone running a Turbosmart opr T40 Turbo Oil Pressure Regulator

I would like to hear from anyone running this product. Specifically want to know where you plumbed the oil bypass return line.

I have one that I plan on running but haven't gotten around to it.

The easiest location would be the oil fill tube... unfortunately it's on the wrong side of the motor. I'm not sure how much oil it would really flow. One of the vent ports on the head would probably be the easiest.

Yea, the vent tube would be easy but I worry about crankcase pressure blowing it directly into the AOS (or...)

Thanks for the feedback. I am considering this configuration:

910 PTFE (PT#3490 -4AN) from the regulator return to a Killer B or Torque solutions billet aluminum oil fill tube. I plan to tap it to fit a -4AN ~ 1/8 NPT fitting (PT # 3250-02-04C).

The run will be a bit longer than I would like but I think the -4AN should be able to provide decent flow back to the pan. (just don't remove cap when engine is running or I bet a nice blast of return oil will be offered forth to the engine bay ;-(

My thoughts about other closer by return options:

Tapping into the valve cover vent tubes is no good because there is a relatively free flow from those to the catch can (or worse yet directly to the intake track) This could cause the return oil to be carried into the catch can / intake. NOTE: Tapping into the passenger side valve cover may be a nice option to reduce the length of the return hose, I am considering this as an option as well... just need to find a spot that won't foster splatter into the vent tube suck...

Tapping into the turbo oil return is no good due to the limited capacity.. the turbo needs every bit of it.

I will keep you posted as I complete my build. I am currently changing over from FP Red stock location turbo to a PTE 6466 rotated turbo so I am a few weeks out to complete the project.

Hi... so I guess not many Subie dubies are running the turbo OPR. I just finished designing the layout and applying it. I ended up drilling and tapping the OEM oil fill tube.

Background: I am in the process of finally going rotated with an ETS kit and a PTE 6466 turbo. I have heard many folks describing the struggles they face with running PTE's on the street so I am working to give it every opportunity to survive.

One of the struggles I hear about is smoking... and some say it has to do with high oil pressure to the turbo. I discussed with PTE and the tech said oil drain is critical and running a turbo OPR on a subie is not a bad idea due to the relatively high oil pressure.

Regarding oil drain: I discovered that the oil return tube used with the ETS kit has a dead end blockage to a portion of the the PTE oil drain casting... this is a big NO NO per PTE. I plan to address this by using the PTE 10AN O ring fitting and high temp oil drain hose.. more on that in another post.

Today's focus is modifying the OEM oil fill tube to accommodate the TurboSmart T40 oil pressure regulator return line. Below are photos of my install and key points I considered.

I was concerned with the return oil being introduced to the oil fill so close to the small breather port that runs to the AOS... so I used my borescope to confirm that the baffle just under the oil fill tube interface does in fact provide a soft seal (metal to aluminum) thereby keeping the blast of return oil away from that tube.

I will keep you all posted on how this work out.

All of the ball bearing precision turbos I've used, I just put a vibrant restrictor in them. the come with a few orifice sizes. No smoking issues after that.

I'm curious to see how the finished lines came out? Any pics?

Reason being the return into the oil fill tube is sitting up high for an oil drain. I'm having a hard time visualizing the final product lol.

Hi, thanks for the question. Can you see the photos in post #8? (I was having problems with photos showing up and changed them to NASIOC image hosting). The last photo shows the line attached to the oil fill tube.

The oil being returned to the oil fill is not really a "drain" it is a bypass. It is under some pressure (any in excess of 40psi) so it makes it into the fill tube with no problem even though the path is a little up hill.

Note: If the oil fill cap is removed when engine is running and the OPR is bypassing oil back to the fill tube it will splatter out...so I never remove the oil cap when engine is running and I can see the pressure at that gauge is over the 40psi bypass level.

Hey, wondering if you are asking about the turbo oil pressure regulator bypass oil line which I ran to the oil fill tube or are you asking about the turbocharger oil drain (i ran this to the OEM oil return port in the head)

Not yet, I heard they have reliability issues so sticking with the 450 for now.

I am loosing some diffie fuel pressure at 635 AWHP (pump running at 22volts). I may try the 525 at some point.. but I think the next mod will be to go bigger on the fuel line from tank to engine bay... then maybe dual pumps.

Quick update, this is working great.. I have 2.5k miles on it so far. HP is at 635 at 30psi

Yea, PITA to find place to put and manage it.. and just want to see what a single pump will provide. My goal is 750 at wheels, if I can get it with one pump at 22v with larger fuel line from tank to engine bay I would rather do it that way.

I respect the drive to learn what a single pump can do haha. You likely are going to need more than a 450 for 750 I would imagine.

My tuner uses a single pump Radium tank in the front on the GD chassis cars and it fits just fine. A 525 in the front surge + a 450 in the rear tank is more fuel than you'll ever need on the 6466 and would be a clean easy install without having to run new lines FWIW


Dom Acia also likes the Walbro 5XX pumps w/ surge tanks and hes tuned more Subarus than probably anyone.
