Default 07 STI Longblock into 06 WRX

This is a thread to help any wrx owners that have blown their motors and can only find sti ones forsale. This is done on two euro/ Australian long blocks. So you may find further differences with the cam pickups on USDM versions.

No need to comment yet i will add to this post over the weekend while i am doing the install

Basically unless you want to do a heap of wire tracing/ rewiring, the wrx loom needs to be used it has 2 section. The STi has only 1 section which goes to a huge plug.

Differences
  • TGV's on Sti's have the TGV motor and TGV sensor in the same unit.
WRX Have the sensor on one runner and the motor on the other runner.
*Solution* Swap the TGV section from the wrx intake to the sti's
  • Headers on sti motor are 60mm diameter instead of 52mm on wrx (outside diameter)
  • Manifold on sti motor isn't tapped for the manual purge valve after the fuel purge solenoid
  • Air pump on front of motor
*Solution* Use wrx air pump it plumbs up.
  • Wrx has a push type clutch (no pin) and seperate GB loom that dosnt need to be disconnected this makes the install very quick and straight forward.
  • Sti has a stretch belt and no pulley adjustment Use what ever one you feel like.
  • Wrx water temp sensor needs to be swapped onto sti
  • Tgv holes on the sti manifold need to be drilled or the manifolds need to be swapped
  • sti fuel rail dosn't have a fuel reg so the wrx fuel reg needs to be used
Sames
  • So far the following plugs are the same:
    -Injectors
    -AVCS solenoids
    -Cam sensors
    -Crank sensor
    -Water temp
    -Oil Pressure
    -Throttle body
    -Coil Packs
    -Air pump solenoids
    -power steering
    -AC
    -Carbon canister purge solenoid
    -Knock sensor
    -
More updates as i progress...

Both motors are now side by side. it took 3 hours to remove the motor

Basically swap the tgv sections over and its good to go, the motors are very similar in almost every way.

The intake manifold comes off easier removing the lower and upper parts with the turbo intake instead of trying to undo the fuel lines

seems to be no wiring needed for this swap at all, great news

motor its in and running much quieter then the tired 06 motor.

Pretty much a easy conversion if you have both motors side by side.

bringing this thread back to life, I am building a block for my 06 wrx and am trying to find heads to use. Looking at b25 ones but am unsure it they work. From what you said here it worked out right? no problems with sensors or anything?

I have a 2007 WRX TR with slight knock and need to swap the engine out. So basically the STI long block is a direct replacement with the mentioned modifications? I am looking at buying a STI swap and was wondering if there were any other issues with the swap?
