Abridged version of how to get 400+hp:

$6000 for those with a 6 speed already
$10,000 for those with a 5 speed

The end

Build motor, upgrade fuel system, slap a GT35R on it.

Sounds like what I am looking for.

I'd like to see that build recipe. I spent considerably more to make it to the 400 club on a mustang dyno in my sti.

So, around $45k all in?

I bought an all OEM, 4 door, brand new from dealer, showroom floor, and warrantied 400+hp 6MT for less than that, but it wasn't an STi.

Definitely need to upgrade all of your mounts before you start really pushing on HP.

Interesting perspective. I'm new here, coming from a 2017 BMW M3 6MT which has 400 whp stock and RWD, I guess I never thought about it that way. I'm currently looking to replace it with a 2020 STI with 400 wheel build in mind, but after reading the original post, I think my goals will be a little more modest. My M3 is much too fast for the street, and that's with me constantly battling wheel spin. When it hooks, especially in 1st or 2nd, it's legitimately scary if you're not paying attention. Now I'm starting to think 350 whp with a nice flat torque curve to redline will be plenty with the AWD.

Where there is good information here, the Subaru offerings since this Sticky was written has advance 10 fold. You can have a liveable 2020 STI with 400 AWHP. Talk to any of the builders or shops. Outfront Motorsports, RS Motors-West, RS Motors, ASM, Six Star - Illinois, P&L, Turn-in-Concepts, IAG, P2P Motorsports, Flat Four, Six Star in PA, JR, Boost Controlled Performance so many others out there in addition to the ones listed. Sky is almost the limit now, I know of several 500 AWHP dailies running around in my area alone.

hey guys i am new to the Subaru world, I am doing my best sifting through threads, comments, youtube videos and articles to find information. I just bought a 2011 wrx hatch with 33k. 400hp is more than I am looking for I am curious however to know about how much power can i expect with a catback exhaust, catted downpipe, intake and a good tune with 93 octane. That's really as far as i am willing to go at this point, I don't want to sacrifice reliability. I know each car is different even another 11 wrx and every dyno is different so I don't expect an exact number, just an estimate. thanks!

your theory is that someone with a stock sti, 230whp, will upgrade to 400whp right off the bat, resulting in a big change of driving, which I agree can be dangerous. But who really does that? Who is going to really drop all that money AT ONCE to go from 230whp directly to 400whp? Most likely, they will get upgrades that get about 50-60whp max at once, and drive it for a while, and get a little more power, until they reach their goal. So in my theory they'd be going 230whp... plus a few mods... then be at 260whp... then maybe some other mod and be at 280whp... then 320whp... etc. So they are pretty much taking step by step experience.
My build is set for 500hp give or take. BUT, I started out with a JDM STI version 5 stock (sold that car), then my current tune which is low 3s (309hp on a mustang dyno) and now with my current upgrades will be in high 400s. Understand though (for viewers) after 400hp (imo) one should mandatory welded roll cage. Close to 500 and above replace all glass with plexiglass (windshield included). That's the route I'm taking.

Yeah $6k got me to 353whp on a Mustang Dyno. A far cry from a true 400whp setup.

This has been an interesting thread. Especially starting with the OP post. It is interesting, because you can get in very deep very fast if you are not careful. I will plainly admit to being a Subi Newbie, but not a newbie to tuning import cars. I'm on my 2nd subie...a 2017 STI....awaiting a new 2020 STI when they start building them again (ordered from the factory). I came from a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX AWD, which got so modded that it became an issue a day. It was not only my daily, it was my only car. At the end on the day, I think I had 20k in mods, maybe more with all the supporting mods for a 61 pound/min turbo. It gets crazy fast.

I'm surprised you went to a Subaru after having a DSM. I actually went backwards, from a 02 WRX to a 91 DSM. However, it isn't my daily. But the cost to power ratio on a DSM is pretty awesome. Hope you get your new STI soon!

Thanks, I understand as most people will tell that DSMs are much cheaper to mod/tune. I loved that car as I had it for 16 years and put 225k miles on it. It just got to the point of...."it's done" The strut towers were rusting out badly, rear suspension pick up point was rusted bad, water pump seal blew out, needed new tires, etc. Wanted to get an EVO, but they got discontinued and was not going to buy (finance) a brand new leftover discontinued car.....and needed it now, so hello subi

I don't know how you guys keep 1st gen DSMs running. I was getting everything from www.JNZtuning.com, they are great.

Default Downpipe

So I have a 2017 STI, parts ordered so far. AP V3, up-pipe w/ dump tube and Tial external waste gate. I currently have a cattless DP, and SRS CB exhaust thinking about going with the divorced grimmspeed catted DP I am not sure. Also have cold air intake. My question I guess is what can I put on without a pro-tune. I put on the catless DP for a few days just to play around and the O2 sensor would go off randomly so I put the stock DP back on if I wanted to go back to the cattless will I run the risk of blowing up my motor? I am only making 19.1 PSI with the cold air intake stage one map and CB exhaust. This is my first STI I am new to the game so if these are dumb questions I understand.
