What's the proper "re-setting" process???

Isn't it pulling a fuse???

To resett the ECU,

1) disconnect the battery
2) let the car sit for 1/2 hr - 45 min
3) re-connect the battery (if you have an alarm, hit the disarm button as soon as tye battery is re-connected, or else you'll get an ear full)
4) start the car and let it idle / warm up for 10 minutes. Do not touch the accelerator pedal during this phase.
5) shut the engine down, re-start and drive the way you want. The ECU will start re-learning.

Ta dah!!!

done..

I think there is a fuse you can pull. I refuse to reset my ECU because of all my radio stations and radio settings though. Through all my different intakes and everything, I have never reset my ECU.

i was just about to make that comment 8...

i want to reset my ecu (haven't done it in 85,000 miles haha) but i don't want to lose all my settings. with my wacked out digital head unit, there are about 600 settings for radio, crossover, sub settings, etc etc etc. if i reset it, i'm going to lose it all.

any idea if the fuse will keep my radio settings? i looked in the manual and didn't find the fuse for the 97 obs...

I'm in the process now. I only have Q101 programmed, so that'll be easy to replace. Hell, when ya have the MP3 player, ya don't worry bout the radio!

There IS a fuse that you can pull. I found it while trouble shooting my burnt out radio. I'm not sure if it keeps or loses the radio stuff though.

Besides, as 8 has demonstrated, you don't really have to resect the ECU, it will, over time learn the new settings. but by reseting it manually it just does it instantly.

Well, my problem is that over time the power got worse and worse.... may have a marginal O2 sensor? Who knows. I hadnt made any changes on the car, but it did alot for me.

Resetting though... supposedly there are some connecters under the dash that if you hook up it will reset the ecu without doing anything else. supposedly this is how the dealers do it. You'll have to search for that one though, I just do the battery reset... only 3-4 stations to preset, oh and the clocks.

I have had multiple auotmotive technicians(Subaru, Mitsubishi, and a European Touring Car tech) and others tell me that reseting your ECU does nothing for your car. You get just as much of a performance gain out of washing it, or putting that Greddy sticker across the windshield. Unless you are having a sensor malfunction, which means there is a larger problem, resetting the ECU is a mind game.

Well, you're sorta right...
Assuming that you havent changed anything, and the car is working properly, there is no reason it would help. However, there is no doubt that it make the modifications register quicker, and in my case, allow a possible bad sensor to be reset to factory defaults.

well Midwayman, my performance was dropping as well as my gas mileage. Turned out to be my 02 sensor went out, replaced it and reset the ecu. Runs way better and got the gas mileage back to normal.

Midwayman is partially correct, "resetting"your ECU can improve driveability if the ECU has been corrupted from, say a bad O2 sensor or Temp sensor among other components. I have performed many "clear memory" ops when there were no codes to correct the "learning curve". As far as procedure, we have a select monitor that clears the ECU in about 10 seconds.

What Kevin said, plus the ECU also learns to retard the ignition timing for when it hears knock as well as learns to lean out the engine to the near lambda o2 values.

So far, everytime I've reset the ECU, I get about 14mpg which eventually gets better after about the 2nd tank or so.

-------

Also if you are extremely anal or paranoid, you may want to check your ignition coil and spark plug wires every other oil change. I posted in the power forum the problem I've had with rust on the ignition coil terminals. Which may have been caused by a bad wire in combination with water coming under the open hood scoop. The misfire is now gone with new wires and a clean terminal and the car runs much more smoothly.

The terminals on the ignition coil should be a shiny brass in color. The spark plug wires should measure 5.12-12.34K ohms.
