Have a Nice Day? Toyota Yaris GR-4

AWD 3-door? Maybe turbo? Maybe hybrid? I can haz!?

More info should be available during Tokyo Auto Salon. The rumor I saw on twitter was that the TGR WRT will be there instead of the 2020 WRC Season launch in Birmingham, UK.

The Yaris we get in the states is drastically different than the Yaris abroad... Ours is based on a Mazda 2. Theirs is a completely different chassis. Doubt we'll ever see this here.

Super sad. The damn American branches of the car companies want us all to buy the same ****ing thing. Setting up the cattle chutes to sedan or cuv monotony. Then the European branches give all the choices. Like this Yaris. Or any other hatchback offered by tons of other manufacturers. It's ****ing depressing. Thank god VW still brings the R here or I would literally not know what car I'd be driving.

If Americans bought these cars, they'd be offered here. When they are offered, they don't sell or make money longterm.

When they are offered they suck and are overpriced entry level garbage bins for city dwelling economic toddlers. No screaming engines.

It's about the bean counters reducing consumers buying options so they can maximize profit and pay CEO's obnoxiously stupid salaries. That's all it is.

VWoA sold 26,700 Golf Sportwagons in 2017. Population about 330M. (about 80 per million people)
VWUK sold 5,800 Golf Sportwagons in 2017. Population about 67M. (about 87 per million people)

Per capita, US bought nearly identical amounts of the the Sportwagons.

VWoA Discontinued Sportwagons.
VWUK continues to sell 5 different trims of Sportwagons, including a legit R.

Why? It's not because the sales aren't there.

Supposedly this is a homologation special for the next Yaris WRC (note the lowered roofline). If the info I was finding online is correct, the production requirements are still fairly low at 2500, but considering Akio Toyoda is in full on WRC fanboy mode, I think there's a shred of a possibility out there.

I don’t think it is coming to the US but it looks like a riot. That squat when all 4 start spinning and sub 2800lbs.

It's because they can probably sell more of the equivalent CUV version vs the small wagon in the U.S. While wagons are still popular in Europe, they are slowly shifting to CUVs too. Plus, we'll see how VW (or any company) operates in the UK once the Brexit mess is settled.

Small wagons were never that popular in the U.S. The popular station wagons of old were big and equivalent of the large 2 row and 3 row CUV's of today. The old station wagons also handled like boats too.

I would like to see how many RS6 Avants they sell before Audi pulls the plug saying Americans don't buy wagons.

I wish the local gun range would put in for a raffle to all us members to purchased a used or wrecked CUV so we could use it as target practice. I'd bring the Vepr12, some slugs and maybe an AK. Would be one of the best days of my life.

What I do't understand about products like this that they don't bring here (even just the normal yaris, since apparently we get a different chassis altogether) is how their math works out.

Seems to me that basically ANYTHING offered by a company that is even mildly more practical than a BRZ could sell at least as well as that car... and obviously they see fit to sell that car... so why not bring over everything else?

We don't know which engine is being used for the GR-4. We'll find out next month. Above is the 2ZR-FE 1.8 which replaced the 1(2)ZZ-FE engine and found in the previous limited edition MY '17 GRMN Yaris that was FWD and had 209 hp. It's not certain whether the AWD setup will require more oomph and a step up to a 2.0 3ZR-FZE with a supercharger or a homologation 1.6 1ZR FE. But given the image above and the images below, using the black plastic cover as a guide, the ZR engines should look similar and the 4 intake plenums on the plastic cover in the bottom image of the actual GR-4 rules out the use of the 'newly developed 1.5-liter inline three-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine based on the TNGA design philosophy.'
