IMO, we will see the digital cockpit on the higher trims as an option with the upcoming facelift.

MK8 interior is right there with the current Audi/BMW offerings. It’s much better built quality than the 340I I sold to and it’s doing a fine job as it’s replacement.

I couldn’t bring myself to buy a MK7, but the MK8 is amazing. Seats, steering, engine all feel excellent. Kicking myself for not buying a golf R
Same here. Before I bought my BRZ in 2018 and then a STI in 2019, I test drove the MK7.5 GTI (didn't consider R then as it was about 4-5k over budget). The GTI was a bit too soft for my liking.

Bought a MK8 back in June as I needed a car with lower running costs. Very happy with my choice soo far. Could be argued that it's not as nice material wise as the MK 7.5, but the design is much more modern.

It's still a softer car (compared to my last few daily drivers), but definitely a better starting point compared to the prior gen. Inputs are solid, and the engine is exceptional.

*Sighs* I might be part of the older majority, but from a functionality standpoint, idk if a digital cluster is that great of an idea in terms of reliability. Unless we as a population are ready to treat our cars like phones; Grab a new one every couple years. Orr maybe it is? im not sure. Like the new Mustang GT, id be a bit perturbed if my cluster went out while I was going 70 down the freeway.

they are likely more reliable than an analog cluster. there are a ton of companies that do nothing but repair analog clusters. cost is the same too.

Same. I prefer a nice clean analog cluster over the digital dash.

Oh really. Shoot I wasn't aware. Well maybe if they keep a mixture of both that'd be pretty cool, something about watching the needle raise vs a digital one, I can't explain it.

Capacitive touch buttons on the wheel are gone, but the volume sliders are still there...

Also, that screen is HUGE! Too big!

Holy ***** that screen overpowers the dash lol, but I somewhat get it in terms of how that middle console arrangement sits. Im not sure if a screen with Blue lights inside is that good of a move in terms of night-time driving. The screen sits eye level where you should be able to see over the dash -> road. I'd have to sit in one

Tesla interiors are cohesively designed. That is just a screen stuck on with double sided tape.

I like the current Mk8 interior more than the refresh.

wait what?

Did you forget what the interior of your car looks like? It's a spartan dashboard with nothing on it, and a floating gigantic computer monitor in front of it. There is no cohesiveness because there is literally nothing on the dashboard, it's just a flat board. Are you just caught up on the fact that it's floating in the tesla vs seemingly more attached in the VW refresh?

As I look at that photo and the wires hanging everywhere and the completely missing screen in front of the steering wheel, it looks like this is a test mule where they've just put a bigger screen in place of one of the older screens to test functionality. Maybe that'll be their final design, or maybe they'll integrate it more into the dash. Or maybe they're going all tesla and will get rid of the screen in front of the wheel.

Honestly though, VW golf hit peak interior in the mk7.5.

It's a design, vs an afterthought. VW is just attaching their ID.4 (is this one bigger?) screen to an existing interior dash design. It does not look like the same designer did the dash and screen.

Franz sculpted the 3/Y interior, with innovative venting and a clean Scandinavian look. The screen is mounted at the midpoint of the dash, it is not sitting on top.

The Mk8 (current) screen in integrated into the flow of the dash. The update is an afterthought.

Elegant:

Contemporary, well designed:

Quick-Fix:

I simply do not believe this to be true.
I have had several classic cars. The two I have now are 54 and 51 years old. The original gauges still work in both. Show me any 50 year old piece of technology that can last this long. Not only that, should mine break, I can rebuild them and they will go another 50 years.

I will fully admit, nobody is keeping any modern car 50 years anymore as they will all be in junk yards (eclipse, beretta, corsica, taurus, etc). Newer cars will last even less time. EV will last the shortest times of them all as they will be made software irrelevant before the car is actually worn out.

It looks to me like this is a mule, not any official design. There are wires coming out from behind the screen and from where the cluster would be. Really? We think this is the final design?

I wouldn't be surprised if that screen drops 3-4" or so, the cluster goes away completely, and the dash is completely sculpted to accommodate the new screen in a coherent way like the original mk8 design was...

The tesla design looks like ****. It's a good thing you like it, but I dislike everything about it... It doesn't look coherent to me, it looks like someone designed a car that was never intended to be driven, and then mounted a computer monitor to the middle of it. There is zero focus on the driver, it's all about maintaining equity between all passengers. It looks scandanavian? Sure. Maybe. Like a car that Ikea would design.

To each his own. I like everything about it. Now, the Mustang Mach E vertical screen is terrible in my eyes...it's way too upright. There's just something off about it when I sit in the driver's seat. But, that's why they sell different things to different people.

I do think the VW is very close to production (especially the wires, JK). You could be right, but my money is on this being it.

That screen is likely the finished screen going into MK8.5's. The problem is that the instrument cluster and binnacle was designed to flow into the infotainment screen. The abrupt manner that the instrument cluster meets the new screen is jarring and looks like some aftermarket mod. Hopefully the instrument cluster will be updated.
