Default Mis-timed and now does not fire

The car: 1997 Impreza OBS 2.2L SOHC.

I was replacing my timing belt tensioner rod and pulley and accidentally replaced the belt (new from 5k ago) over the crank/cam improperly aligned. Car started and sputter but kept running rough till I shut her down.

I'm quite certain this motor with the older 2pc tensioner and pulley is non-interference.

Re-did the belts but now she does not fire, cranking is strong though.

I removed the spark plugs and they were wet with fuel, now do I only have a flooded engine that I can leave overnight, replace the plugs and good to go?

Check to make sure you have the crank sensor plugged in. It's right above the oil pump. And make sure the maf is also plugged in.

The crank sensor and MAF plugs were not removed and they are sitting tight. I hope it's just a case of fuel fouled plugs.

I'd probably double check the timing belt one more time.

Thanks tim, I've checked the timing belt again and the crank gear has the notch at 12 o'clock, arrow at 3 o'clock. The cam gears both have their notches pointed at 12 in line with the plastic cover notches and arrow at 1 o'clock positions.

For the belt I place it with the three white lines on the belt lined up with the notches on the crank and cam gears. Arrow on the belt is pointed right when seen from the front of the car.

Getting new plugs and firing her up tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well tried with fresh plugs, still wouldn't start. I floored the throttle between starts to stop the fuel flow but still soaked the new plugs

During my attempts to start there was backfire popping intermittently.....have I destroyed the cats???

Sensors are plugged in, timing is correct with crank and cam gears lined up and belt put in with the three white marker lines in line with the crank/cam gears.

HELP!!!

Do a compression test. I bet bent valves or timing is still off on the belt. Popping is not a good sign. I am sure an 97 engine is interference.

Even on the 2.2L SOHC the motor is interference? I'll do a compression test ASAP....

I always thought only the DOHC motors are interference
