These filters could be a better option than the b-161s. I know the length of the b1431 will fit, and it probably doesnt have the concaved threaded end that the b161s has. 14psi bypass isnt that far off.

I'm in a good mood tonight, so I waded through my Oil FAQ to find this answer for you about Baldwin filters: www.oilfilterstudy.com

I remember reading that.

http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/baldwin-b1428.htm

So Baldwin filters seem pretty good. I think it might be worth a shot.

BITOG guys seem to love Baldwin, and if I recall correctly, baldwin makes K&N oil filters and a couple other high end filters.

This could be the proper answer for those wanting an oversize filter. Especially if you have a skid plate. Im trying to find a place to buy these online right now.

Go to:

http://www.adiesel.com/automotive.php

And choose 89 Honda CRX either engine.

6.xx a filter, reasonable shipping.

Thanks for pointing out the Baldwins. I've never heard of them before, but anything I've read about them over the last day says that they're great filters. It seems like they filter better than the Purolator Premium Plus (or OEM filter), and flow better than the restrictive Pure One. Seems like a good compromise. I just picked one up at a local FleetPride for $7.76. That's no bargain, but I'm in the mood to use something a little different, and eight bucks isn't going to put me in the poorhouse.

You pointed out the Baldwin's low 8psi bypass pressure rating. Anyone know what the Premium Plus and Pure Ones are rated at? Thanks.

I agree that full flow filtering is a compromise between flow and filtering. The Baldwin seems to be a good compromise plus a good amount bigger and have the right bypass setting. Im pretty sure the purolators have the correst bypass setting of 20-25psi.

Question

What would be the downside to using a filter with a lower ADBV psi setting than OEM? Can it effect the flow of oil between the filter and engine? Or do the benefits of better filtering outweigh the ADBV differences?

It means you will go into bypass more easily. OEM is set at 20-25 (or 18-23 ?). So 8 is WAY lower. I bet you'll be in bypass a lot. Do you want unfiltered oil flowing through that regularly?

Really, you can't beat OEMs.

The bypass setting is how much the filter will allow itself to restrict the flow of oil before it bypasses the filter. It might happen on a cold start up or on a very old used filter.

Using a filter with a lower bypass pressure than oem wont necesssarily hurt anything, but you probably wont be filtering oil as much of the time.

ADBV (anti drain back valve) and the bypass valve are two different things.

On a Subie you can use a filter with or without an ADBV, I dont think the oem one has one since the filter sits the way it does.

I understand your point, but I don't follow your logic. Either it's bypassing because it's clogged with crap, or it's not. I can't believe a modern engine driven in 'average' conditions like commuting in the suburbs is going to clog up an oil filter in 3k miles to the point that it's going to cause oil to go the bypass route through the filter.

Dont forget about cold oil.

Also lets say that when your engine is at 90psi on the highway at 3300rpm and youre running a cheap oil filter, and at 90psi the filter presents around a 10psi restriction, you wont be filtering.

Guess what, I made that up, but Subaru didnt just make up their oem filter's bypass setting, so its probably a good idea to follow it.

Update;

Im using this filter now, it seems like a perfect size and is way bigger than the bosch I replaced. The filter does not come down lower than the oil pan so it is safe. The width clears my wrapped gruppes headers. The only drawback is the plate is concaved a little, so it doesnt thread on as much as a stock filter, If anyone has used an amsoil sdf20 the threading characteristics are similar to that.

I will be doing some particle counts along with uoas to compare the baldwin to the other filters ive used.

Default Hold on there...

I just tried this filter and I must say it seems like a poor fit for the WRX.

Let me first say that I am a huge fan of Baldwin filters. I work at Centerline Alfa Romeo, a major parts retailer, and we only sell Baldwin filters for both 4 and 6 cylinder Alfas, literally thousand a year go out to our customers. I also have personally used Baldwins on my Alfas for 10+ years. So, no question, I think they are a great quality filter.

The problem with the B161-S is fit. As Santofontana referred to, this filter doesn't engage very many threads on the fiter boss. In my case, I got about 2 turns of the filter before the gasket contacted the mounting face. It didn't feel right to me, so I grabbed a tech from the independent Toyota repair shop next door, and he felt it and concurred that there was no way he would install a filter that fit like that, on either his car or a customer's car. I tried a second B161-S - same result.

I grabbed a factory Subaru filter, which gave me 6-7 full rotations of the filter before contacting the mounting face. Much better.

Maybe the Baldwin B301 would be a better fit, as it's listed by them as a direct cross reference to the factory/Purolator filter.

Although the bypass valve setting is only 8 psi's on that. OEM filters rule.

IMO it threads on enough to be safe. Other filters that are speced for subarus like the amsoil sdf20 have the same issue. I have been running amsoil filters for about 60,000 miles with no issues, so thats probably why it didnt bother me as much as it would someone who is used to it threading on more.

Default Baldwin Oil Filter

I just checked out the baldwin site and was recommended the following filter for an 03 wrx wagon. Baldwin B1400? is this a good filter for me? Should I stick with Wix or Pure One?

Thanks,
Justin

Make sure it has the right bypass. If so its better IMO.

wix=wrong bypass
pure one=too restrictive

B-161S. I'm running one now. Hand-tight was just over three full turns, and I went 1.5 turns past that.
