Default Oxygen Sensor problems on 2000 Impreza 2.5 RS

I would like to know if anyone else has had problems with the front O2 sensor on their Impreza 2.5 RS?

I've had three changed out so far including the original and the recall letter. Now their (Subaru) is telling me that there may be a need to replace the ECM and put in a different sensor.

At this point I'm a little miffed that a car of this caliber is having such problems with a relatively unsophisticated / standard part.

Any feedback / experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have not had a problem with mine yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

I thought there was a recall on the sensors ...I think everyone with a 00-01 has blow their o2 at least twice. I did but third time is a charm.

Knoffer,

I had SOA buy back my 2001 Forester because of the same problem. I would check the lemon law in your state because you might be intitled to a refund or a new car after 3 attempts. There are many sites on the web that list lemon law regulations for each state.

The good news is, if they do replace the O2 sensor and the ECU at the same time, you shouldn't have any more problems. It seems the first bad O2 zots out the ECU and all new O2 sensors will not work correctly until it's changed.

It probably cost you a lot of time and trouble to keep taking your Impreza in so I would get compensation from SOA if I were you....and a matter of fact I did when it happened to me This was a Subaru/Bosch screw up so it's totally not your fault so make sure you get satisfaction.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Gee I had my O2 sensor changed when the letter came out. I have yet to have any problems. I didn't have problems before I got the letter either. Knock on wood!

Don't settle for a 7th! You need the ECU swapped with the next O2...

Have a Nice Day?

Update!!!!!!!

Well, I finally got the word. Subaru is going to reconfigure my ECU. I'm taking it in tomorrow morning. They are going to take it out and send to Subaru to get remapped. They are going to flip the bill for a rent a car til they get it back and install it. Hopefully by Tuesday. The funny thing is that they said they didn't have to replace the O2 sensor. This seems very strange to me. I'm going to try and insist that they do. The last thing and stupist thing I could think of would be to fix the ECU and pair it to a bad O2 sensor and ruin another perfectly good ECU.

Will keep you updated.

Yup, I'm on my fourth. (Just put in the third replacement unit about three weeks ago.) Fun, isn't it?

At least I have a 90% chance of guessing what the Check Engine light is, when it comes on.

I'll look in to the ECU thing the next time I get one.

Hmmm.... a new car huh? Wonder how that'd work for me, seeing as I have a 2000.....

Has Subaru been able to nail down a particular range of VIN's or manufacture dates that are prone to this? Sensor wise, I've had 17,000 problem-free miles with my '00. I hope it stays this way.
My clutch is a different story...

I have a '01 2.5 and I haven't had any o2 sensor problems. Was there a recall letter for '00s and not '01s? Was the problem fixed? Just wan't to know what to watch out for.

Thanx

Would you please point me to the right direction about these O2 sensors. They have been driving me nuts. I have it changed once this year. Now, it seems the problem is coming back up. Mine is '01 2.5RS. So, I dunno what is the deal here.

Thanks for the bandwidth, any info will be greatly appreciated.

Perry.

Well what is it you want to know?

There was a service bulletin sent to those with 2000 2.5 cars... not sure about '01 ones. But regardless, Subaru knows about it, so the fix should be free, regardless of whether you're beyond your warrantee or not.

I just want to know what causes them. Other than O2 sensors, My car is basically trouble free. Is the TSB really solve the problem? I just can't bring myself to dealership twice a year to change this O2 sensor for rest of the life of this car.

Thanks.

Perry.

And how exactly do you know if the O2 sensor is bad?

horatio,

You'll get a Check Engine light. Numerous things can cause that light to turn on, but with our cars, it's a safe bet that it's the O2 sensor. The car won't perform any different, but don't let it go too long if possible. I assume that if the computer can't regulate the O2 properly, it could mess up the engine dynamics, in time...

stealthy,

For some reason the sensor is just incompatible with the ECU, I think, in some way. Which I assume is why they work for a while, and then die. The ECU is a learning computer, so I guess that makes sense... (???) I know it stinks, but at least it's a free fix.

Hey are you a member of S2000online? I don't know if I recognize your handle, unless you use a different one over there.

horatio102 -
Last time I have my O2 sensor problem, the car act like refuse to put in first gear. I press gas pedal, but it is not accelerating. I thougth the trans died (since it is an automatic). but, that was only 8K miles on the car. The whole car just rock back and forth and nothing happened. Than come with that aweful smell. It smells like something is burning inside the car. After a dealership visit, it turned out to be a O2 sensor fault. The smell that I keep smelling is catalytic converter.

Anyway, the problem came back again. It had happened once two day ago. But, as soon as I shut down the car and everything is fine again. (Gee, my car act like a windows PC).

Hey, Siper, I remember you. I thought it was a coincidence that there is another siper here. Guess there is only one siper. Just saying 'Hi'.
