Default Help with OBD1 or OBD2 determination on 97 Legacy

So a 16-year-old friend of mine is looking for a cheap 2nd-gen Legacy wagon and yesterday I found one on a lot here in Portland. $1650 for a 190k, pretty straight M/T EJ22 "L" model with a few power options.

I got a CEL on the test drive... and the tags expire next month, so I want to use that is a serious negotiating tool, but I need to know the error code. So I drove to Autozone on my test drive and realized that there is no OBD2 plug under the dash. WTF?

So I have been researching and it seems like this car should have one. Manufacture date 6/96.

So, if it is OBD1 I need to know how to check the error code... but everything I have found for OBD1 reading seems to have a note saying it only works on the 1st-gen Legacy and not the 2nd.

Can someone help me clarify this? I am going back to the car lot today and I would like to be armed with a little more info, and after 45 minutes of Googling I don't feel educated any better!

If I'm not mistaken, all Subaru's 1995+ are OBD2. This is where it's at on my wagon;

AHHHH! I looked up where to find it online and it showed photos under the dash!

I gotta go back now and try again. Thanks!
