Default my heatshields rattle can i remove them?

well after listening to the sound and looking at the pipe to the muffle while a friend rev's the engine i have finally figured out that the pipe's heatshield is rattling really bad. should i just remove it or is that a bad idea for the pipe?

depends on how close it is to things that shouldnt get hot. if it is near the gastank or brake lise, prolly not a good idea. if not, shouldnt be a problem to take it off.

I'd just tighten it down personally...but if its not near anything where heat is an issue, then toss it in the trash.

well the part that is rattling is right in the middle of the car oddly there is no heatshield past that.

and since the heatshield is bolted to itself around the pipe and not onto anything actually i doubt tightening it would do any good.

There are actually internal clamps that wrap the pipe and sort of hold the bolted together heat shield floating around the pipe. Its these internal clamps that break eventually allowing the outer shield to fail to float around the pipe and actually hit the pipe.

With the above precautions and not parking in tall dry grass if the exhaust is hot, youre good to go.

I removed mine and they were a pain in the ass because of rust. No problems yet and no rattle.

I too have developed this problem over the past few weeks. I'm getting the car up on the lift this week to see where the problem is coming from(and finally install the KB bushings that have been collecting dust on my desk all winter)

Nope, just the rust issues people usally have. I ended up having to hack saw mine cause the little nuts were so badly rusted.

My '97 GT rattled and we took the heat shields off the header area. Then it still rattled so we chiseled them off the exhaust system by the middle of the car. Most of the rattles were gone then, but some persisted. We took the last of the shields off and it purrs like a kitten (okay, it sort of goes "nyuk-nyuk-nyuk-nyuk").

Yes given the above precautions, nothing that cant take it get too much heat and you dont park in tall dry grass with a really hot exhaust.

I cut all of my heat shields off about a year ago, when I redid my exhaust, and it has been running perfectly since. No more rattles.

Try using a dremel. Not sure if it will work for what you need, but they work great for cuting through u-bolts! I have found it to make exaust work much more easy on me.

i believe all of the legacy heat shields go eventually... they were rattling when i crashed my bd, no rattle yet on my bg but im willing to bet money they will eventually. I plan on taking them off preemptively (so i can tell myself im smarter than a heatshield).

I as well have the same problem... I can't stand it. It makes my car sound like s*#@. I've been under there before bending the 2 pieces of each shield together to tighten it, but after the winter it back with a vengeance. I think I'm going to get back under there and cut it off too.

Personally, I would swing by an exhaust shop and have them weld the shield back on/in place. Normally good to have them on
