Default New 2009 WRX or used 2007 WRX

Hi Guys,

Let me start by saying I am new to both these forums and Subarus in general. As I enter the market for a new car I am drawn to the sportiness of the WRX as well as the practicality of the 4 wheel drive as I live in Massachusetts.

My question relates to what WRX might be best for me. I was really hoping to stay in the low 20's for a new car (09 WRX base model is pushing it at 25k, although I know I can get it down a little bit). I also want a moonroof, but other than that a base model does the trick for me. I have been doing a lot of research and it seems the 2008 has gotten pretty bad reviews from loyalists, which is why I am considering going with a used 2007 with relatively low millage...but am wondering what people think about the cost savings being worth it or not?

What might also be helpful is to hear what people have been getting their 2009's for after negotiations.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I hope to make a purchase and become and active member of these forums shortly!

if u dont plan on modding it get the wrx265hp version, if you want to mod then get the 07 and put the money toward mods.

I would say 2007, I like the look better, You might also make sure the tune is fixed on it. There has been problems with stock tunes and engines blowing up also with the 09 wrx stock tune. I would be safe and look for an 06wrx.

I would go with the 09 , if you dont plan on modifying it get an extended warranty and enjoy your car.

I would not be planning on modifying anything. who knows what i might do later in its life, but for now its meant to be an every day driver, practical car with some speed and sportiness. i think the wrx is one of the few cars out there meeting that definition!

i am leaning toward an 09 at this point, but would just love to find a way to get the price down a little more...i guess ill have to see what i can do negotiating wise.

i say 07 cuz of looks. the 09 is way faster but it did have problems with its engine. you're not gonna find older style imprezas any more so if you're thinking about getting an older model, the sooner you get it, the better imo.

09 is "softer?" IIRC the 09 spring rates are considerably higher than those on an 07, actually....

As to the engine issues with the 09s - by all appearances the issues are with cars built in the first two months of production (July-Aug 08) so just go with something built in late 08 or early 09 and you'll be fine.

(btw, not downplaying the issue, as I am one who has had his July 08-built 09 WRX engine replaced).

Everyone I know thinks its a great car and I've enjoyed driving it even in stock form (well, except with swaybars).

exactly...normally buying a used car wouldn't be too big a deal, but with a wrx or other sportier car there is the huge unknown of how much a person may have beaten it. this is where dealing directly with the owner may help a little, but i don't see many used ones out there to chose from anyways!

Keep in mind that the 09 has a good bit more interior room if that matters (I was shopping 07 Wagon Vs. 08 Hatch Vs. FXT). The Lesbian limo won (Massive sunroof FTW).
Hawkeye wagons are hot though...

Get the 2006 STi.

In my humble opinion, it is the finest machine Subaru ever sent to the US shores.

You can find a 1-owner 2006 STi that has NEVER been modded, and the car performs better than 90% of the cars on the road.

I've had lots of Subarus.

I still drool over the 2006 STi.

The 07+ STi is problematic.

The 07 WRX is okay.

The 08 WRX is boring.

The 09 WRX is fragile, just like the 07+ STi.

I was looking for an 09 WRX myself and found the info about the problematic engine between Jul - Aug 2008 very helpful. Thank you ALL! I will look out for that when I go see the dealer.

Probably the best list of the later models. I think alot of people hate on the '08 and '09's because they don't like the 5 doors, but a few of the long term road tests have had some issues. I agree though, the '06 STi is the greatest we can get here, although if we had gotten bugeye STi's I think they would be good as well.

My advice to you would be to go test drive the new 2009 (skip the 2008) WRX. It is my honest opinion that you will be sold instantly. They are a tremendous amount of fun for a stock car.

Where in MA are you looking at the used 07 WRX?

2 months ago, I was in the market for a WRX....went to quirk subaru lookin at a '07 WRX and it was heavily modded.

So just watch out.... if the car has seem to have been modded in the past, pass on it and get the '09

Bwahahahahaha.

Sunroof, lolz.

Sorry, I did not realize how important that can be.

Just get a 330ci then. While not as fast, they're certainly fun.

Sunroof.

HAHAHAHAH.

Sorry. That makes me tickle.

what "problems" does the 07 STi have? A friend of mine has one running 18/10.5 rims, meth kit 410 wheel tq 360 wheel horsepower. Stock top mount. He drives that thing hard as hell and there arn't any problems even under such a heavy load.
