"The HIR bulbs are not some tinted or over-wattage version of 9005 or 9006, but rather employ a relatively new technology called HIR, Halogen Infrared. The mechanical dimensions of the bulb are all virtually identical to the 9005 or 9006, but the bulb glass is spherical instead of tubular, with the sphere centered around the filament. There is a "Durable IR Reflective" coating on the spherical glass. Infrared = heat, so the coating causes heat to be reflected back to the filament at the center of the sphere. This causes the filament to become much hotter (producing more light) than it can by passing electricity through it, *without* the shorter life or greater heat production that comes with over-wattage bulbs (to say nothing of over-wattage bulbs' incompatibility with stock wiring.) Here's the comparison: High beam stock: 9005, 12.8V, 65W, 1700 lumens, 320 hours High beam ... HIR1(9011), 12.8V, 65W, 2530 lumens, 320 hours Low beam stock: 9006, 12.8V, 55W, 1006 lumens, 360 hours High beam ... HIR2(9012), 12.8V, 55W, 1875 lumens, 800 hours"

And by "factory xenon" do you mean you have factory HID in your low beams? How does the factory HID compare to your new high beam HIRs? |

Just wondering, does anyone know if the HIR2(9012) bulb can be modified to fit H11 socket and connectors?

It is not a bad DIY for $15 at all, but coming from always using HID this is quiet a disappointment... maybe down the road I'll bake em lights and retrofit...

I agree compared to factory HID this setup is not close. What I have seen from cheap HID kits and what people pay for those this is a lot better setup for the cash in my opinion. You do not have to worry about blinding people or giving the cops a reason to pull you over.

Just did this mod today because the stock bulbs absolutely suck. They light up the road directly infront of you and nothing else.
While certainly not HID, there's definitely a noticeable difference and with the squirrel finder bent down I have a pretty clean cut off instead of the stock glare. I think eventually I'll retrofit in HIDs but for now this will keep me tied over. |

Just got my bulbs in today too, and I'm not all that impressed. It's a little brighter, I think, but not whiter at all, which is really what I was hoping for.
Luckily I only spent $15 on 2 Philips bulbs on Amazon, so it's no biggie. |

Obviously they are no replacement for HIDs, nothing is. With halogens they best you can do is brighter without adding an destructive heat that melts connectors and housings. I'm kinda over searching for a halogen that COLORwise, will match HIDs, it's not happening without frying stuff, having short bulb life and crappy light output. If you want HIDs, retrofit and you will be happy!

It's certainly not a substantial upgrade. It is nice to be able to see now though and I only got the $7 bulbs as well. Did you bend down your squirrel finder? That seems to have helped me.

I did this over the weekend and it's not a world of difference I can certainly tell..it seems like a more white light and the light seems to go farther to the sides and out more but prolly will save for a retrofit anyway lol

My lows stay on with the highs now too, thought I can't confirm that this didn't happen before the mod. I don't care much as I live in a populated area and never get to use the highs. If I ever did though, they are surface of the sun bright so I'm OK with it

Have had H9 bulbs in 2010 STI SE since new April 2010. The factory H7s are dangerous. Thinking of HIR bulbs in the brights without the stupid yellow paint.
All 4 lights go on with high beams I think from day one pre mod. |

I checked this a couple of days ago, but forgot to post up. My car is stock, with stock bulbs. The high and low beams are on simultaneously when I hit the high beams.

Just did this last night on my car, and noticed the difference this morning.
Will do the wife's this weekend. Before doing hers though, I will get pics side by side of hers/mine for a good comparison. |

Here is a better comparison...as you can see it's definitely an improvement over stock H11's..
But I've always liked HIDs..really thinking about picking up retrofits. |

No need for a retrofit. My definition of a retrofit is buying a whole new housing with new bulbs and ballast installed in by removal of the OEM housing. Too much |

a retrofit is when you install HID projectors in your original housings. the stock housings have Halogen projectors, not HID projectors, and while they look similar (both are projectors), they will refract light differently. HID bulbs with Halogen projectors may be "better" than HID bulbs with regular Halogen reflectors, but it is still not correct.

How can I fit PIAA H9 into the low beam...would it melt/burn cables or headlamp?
