Default Fuel pump issue/whats this plug?

Hey guys,

So I've got my car all back together, but when I went to fire it up, it just turns over, no start. Sounds like its not getting fuel. So I check the fuel pump, and it doesn't sound like it's priming when I turn the key to ON. So, I'm assuming its an issue with how I've hooked it up somehow, and that its not getting power.

Car is an 05' WRX drivetrain/dash swap into a 95' sedan shell. Harness was built by ECS.

I've checked the harness plug under the rear seat area, and my ground there looks cool. However, I did find this one harness plug, which I'm not sure what it is, and could be the problem. I can't seem to find anything which this could possibly plug into though. It's located in the passenger side front A-pillar area, kind of beside the blower box and the harness plug for the dome light.

BTW, I had this swap running in another chassis, and I didn't do anything to it besides re-wrap it in places. So it should just plug and play. That is another reason which has led me to suspect the mystery harness plug as a culprit.

That plug looks like it is for the roof cord. Have you checked the ground on pin 3 of the fuel pump relay? Green plug, usually a light green and black wire? If that is not grounded or your fuel pump controller is not connected your fuel pump will not work.

I was wondering if you wired up the fuel pump controller.

Good thought. What does that look like? Sorry I'm a noob, I just kind of disassembled my white car ECS built for me (which a lady hit and totalled) and reassembled it onto this chassis. The fuel system has been the largest challenge for me.

Check the manual. It will tell you what every plug is based on location, color, and pins. If you're having fuel problems, the relay for the pump should be in that area.

The fuel pump controller is a silver box with heat sink that normally bolts inside the trunk. On the right hand side. The ECU tells it how much power to deliver to the fuel pump. It does this by changing the duty cycle of a pulsing signal. If you don't have it and you're supposed to have it, that's why the pump isn't running.

Ah hah! That could totally be it. I know which box your talking about, on my harness it's near the rear seats on the passenger side. I removed a bracket from the bottom of it with built in machine screws, which I didn't figure was a big deal, and kind of stashed it under the carpet there. Does the case of the box itself need to be grounded? I don't seem to recall that thing being bolted in anywhere on the old car either though. I'll check the harness plugs for it also, to make sure I didn't pull any pins out while wrestling with it.

It probably doesn't need to be grounded. It's a good place to check with a meter to see if it's trying to power the pump though.

You really should have it bolted down to something and some airflow around it, it is a heat sink. Put the bracket back on, pull the interior panel between the B pillar and the seat back and mount it in there. You'll see a perfect place to nest it. Drill two holes and you'll be good to go. Make sure you put a block of wood between the metal you are drilling through and the body.

If you allow the FPC to float around eventually connections can break loose or wires can fray.

Cool. I'll remount it as my next order of business in addition to testing for 12v power to the fuel pump from the pins on the FPC, and I'll see how it goes. I'm not thinking the mounting method was my problem though, the FPC looks gravy to me. Could I have hooked the fuel lines or charcoal canister under the car up incorrectly? Could that be causing the fuel pump to not run?

Thanks again for your help guys.

edit: By the way I'm assuming "roof cord," which the plug I pictured was described as, is for the map lights and maybe sunroof, considering the donor WRX was a premium? I have neither in the L, so that harness plug can just go unused right? With the end capped up of course to avoid it wandering around. The dome light is plugged up already, and that's the only thing up there that needs power.

Yup, you got it. It is only for map lights, dome lights & lighted mirrors if you have em.

So, apparently I didn't have anything wrong at all. When I jumped it today, I figured what the hell and tried again. It sputtered and started, no CELs or anything out of ordinary indicated via sound or gauges. I guess I'm just retarded and wasn't listening well enough to the pump or something, and didn't have enough patience to let the fuel get through the lines.

I do have a small fuel leak on the drivers side in front of the rear wheel, which I think is from me not putting hose clamps on tight enough. Haven't jacked the car up to see whats what yet, but I was so excited it started I was compelled to post up Maybe that was my issue, and I wasn't getting enough pressure under load from the pump on that line to get the fuel to the motor.

So, I got my hopes up. Car is behaving like it was again.

The car started a couple times, intermittently, over the course of the day. When it did start it ran great, no check engine lights or anything. When we did get it started the last time, we let it run with the intention of letting it come up to running temp and making sure all the fluids were topped up afterwards. It ran for a minute or so, and then cut off, almost like someone turned the car off with the key. There was no sputtering like it was leaning out or anything, just cut off. Has not started again.

I've been listening above the pump on start attempts. The one time, I distinctly heard the pump kick on when my friend turned the ignition. By the time I had said "I hear it" the car had started and was running like a dream. So I've come to the assumption that the pump is running intermittently.

What would cause this? Any ideas? I'm headed back down with a voltmeter. Which wires should I be testing on the fuel pressure control box?

As far as I can tell, the fuel pump controller is not getting 12v. Tomorrow I'm getting to the fuel pump relay to see if I have 12v reliably there.

Tested the pump hardwired and it works, so the fuel pump is good. I'm crossing my fingers the fuel pump relay is bad and I can swap it out.
