first...i hope you are doing this on the drag strip and not the street.
the strip is where it is at..hard core numbers, and saftey next would be a full cat back exhuast, intake, SAFC, ITC and a short throw shifter to help your shifts (the shifter does nothing time wise..but does allow for a smoother crisper shift. ) Then, get that all tuned up to it's max, run him at the strip, if you still loose, go to a header, retune, then boost compression ratio, new pistons, heads, valves, etc. or if you want simple..turbo stage 1 from anynumber of companys and remember..take it out on the track, not the street |

You're not gonna do it with bolt ons. What you're looking for for a decisive win against a stock VR6 is a 1.5 second reduction off your 0-60 time, and the easy way to solve that is with a turbo. It's also possible to do it with lots of expensive internal motor upgrades.
& keep it off the street while you're at it! |

thank you ridin..i know the old volskies up to about 93/94 like the back of my hand..but the new ones *shrug* just don't do it for me (although..if they ever bring a 4motion golf...or get the w8 golf out sometime soon... (that'll become my new street car..subie ain't gonna be that streetable in a year or so. )
but..yeah if you have a 1.5 second deficet..either you are going to have to cheat and go with the n20 setup..or just dump the money for a stage 1 turbo..then upgrade to a stage 2+ and really show him on the track |

His 95 VR6 is not stock. the mods he has is 2.25 straight thru pipe from catback with remus muffler,K&N air filter and aftermarket performance chip. I only raced with him from light to light, first gear can keep up but after hit in 2nd, he just blew me away. I think it's the time to consider a turbo now
hehe ^.^ |

Heh.... I used to own a GTi Vr6... those cars are WAY too fast for the 2.5RS in a straight line... it's not even competition... you are asking if you can beat a TypeR with just bolt ons...
The absolute ONLY way you can beat a Vr6 is with a turbo, or NOS... otherwise hehe... it's just not possible... GTi Vr6s are so underrated... they are really fast cars |

Yeah...I'd say that you need a turbo to keep up with him.
After getting a full MRT system, a fender-mount cold air intake, and a pulley/S-AFC/short shifter to finish it off...maybe you can take a stock VR6. But one with a chip, catback, filter, et al? You're looking at a turbo. Stage 1 kits will run you anywhere from $2500 on up. |

I think you are all giving the GTI too much credit. It has like 15lbs more torque but weighs about 500 pounds more. I think it is probably a little faster, but DEFINITELY in the same class. I have driven both and have a friend with one...not too different at all, even if the GTI has a slight straight line edge. Bolt ons should take a stock GTI no problem, or even a better driver. If the GTI is chipped, intake, etc, etc, well, that's different. By the way, a stock VR6 is NOT 1.5 seconds faster 0-60 than a stock RS.

It may actually be more than 1.5 seconds faster than a RS. A RS can do 0-60 in about 8 whereas a new VR6 can do it in high 6's. The VR6 in question is one from the mid 90's; same hp & torque as the new one but in a lighter car.

my suggestion would be to fight fire with fire: SVX HR6
failing that, slash his tires. |

RS = high 7's
VR6 = low 7's (never saw, read, or experienced anything lower for a stock car) I did MUCHO research on these cars, as I was THIS close to buying one until I saw the Subaru and fell in love. And, as always...autocross |

Try racing him in the rain? Hehe... the VRs are pretty quick and respond well to mods too... my sister had a Corrado SLC with the VR-6, and it could take on just about anything. I dunno what to say, a modded VR-6 will put a lot of cars to shame off the line and on the freeway too. At the dragstrip, some buddies were doing easy low 15 high 14 runs consistently, with a trap speed in the 90s. They are easy to launch and have a lot of torque. If you are serious, I would think that a turbo is the way to go.

how can you even compare the VR6 to the RS?? First off 6 versus a 4, front wheel to all wheel....?????? Where is the comparison? I can see maybe a regular GTI in the same class.

I run 7.4 second 0-60's quite often. All I have is an intake. And last I checked a stock GTI VR6 runs them in about 6.8 sec. I can understand a modded VR6 being over 1.5 seconds faster than a scooby, but I find it hard to believe that a stock one would be. Just MHO, I am no expert.

I really think the turbo will do it.
But wat is the price range for a Turbo? also, if he has supercharger, can a turbo RS beat the VR6 supercharger? |

If you add more power you can keep up or be faster off the line but the VR6 will eat up an RS (low pressure turbo or not) on the highway. My 5psi RS is quick off the line but still isn't as quick as my Corrado SLC was (chip, cams & exhaust), and once I hit about 85mph the RS is a lot slower than the Corrado was. The Corrado would pull all the way to 145 or 150mph whereas even with a turbo I'm running out of oomph over 110 or so in the RS. I'd like to see what a cam and maybe some headwork would do for the RS, though, it feels like that is holding the power back.

Welcome to i-club where everyone thinks an RS can do 0-60 in 8+seconds.
Seriously thats pretty terrible. If you can only get a 2000+ RS to run 8s you need to get a little meaner On one of our clocking days stock i was running 7.4 and 7.5 consistently. Added a catback and intake and pulled 7.1 and 7.2s. VR6 is just plain quicker but not too terribly much quicker. RS should hang around till about 50 or so |

The GTi is not 500lbs heavier than an RS. more like 150lbs.
