Tec-II vs Wolf 3D
Whats the difference between these two systems? Advantage and disadvantage? The Wolf 3D is much cheaper...but Shiv's Tec-II kit seems so complete and can do anything and everything...

Tec-II: Crank trigger has high resolution, ignition upgrade, DIY wireing, laptop programable, complete
Wolf 3D: keypad programable, less resolution, dont know about computing power I like the Tec-II, Haltec, or Motec much better. My too sence. Josh |

People have had good luck with the Wolf system. I have seen it in action and don't care for it. Anything with a keypad as its programming device is not something that I'm interested in.
The TEC-II is proven. Especially on Subarus where many people are running around with one today. I like the system so much, I'm installing one on my MR2 very soon. Sean |

Here's our 2-cents: We've yanked off Tech-IIs, DFI, SpeedPro, and Haltechs, and replaced them with the Wolf 3-D and everytime, generated more horsepower. We've built some of the fastest Subarus in America and they've proven to be completely reliable. The keypad does the programming, and you use the laptop to build your programs. The advantage is that you don't need the bigger laptop in the car, as the keypad provides all you need for tuning. The Wolf's capability of on-the-fly tuning from the driver's seat,is a definite plus.
I hope this answers some of your questions regarding the Wolf 3-D. Byron. www.B-SpecUSA.com |

Here is my 2 cents. With a laptop tuning, it is much easier to make sense of evetything and make the correct adjustments. The Wolf's tiny +,- keypad and 1 line LED screen are worthless unless you know exactly what you are doing, in which case it will be adjusting and not tuning. On laptop, you can see all the outputs of all your sensors, datalog and replay runs instantly, and tune the car with the helps of graphs or numbers. But then again, there is a cost factor. Just ask yourself, what do you want to do, tune your car, or goof around with plus and minuses.

Im a Haltec fan myself. You can tune on the fly, although you have to have the laptop to do so. I know it has a high resolution (still not as good as Motec, but good), and computes fast. Ari of Rotary Performance uses a Haltec and he is the fastest import on DOT tires. 10.6's on radials (BFG Drag TAs) and 9.50 on Street E.T.s. That is performance i can and have seen. I cannot speak for the Wolf, i havent seen a fast car with one make a run, myself. Once the Haltec is programed it is perfectly streetable.

Do you know how to tune TEC-IIs, DFIs, SpeedPros or Haltechs? Not to be rude, but each system requires quite a bit of learning to become fluent with. I have yet to meet anyone who can expertly tune more than two different systems, let alone five. Shiv [This message has been edited by shiv (edited March 14, 2001).] |

My thoughts:
1. The TEC-II has knock sensor capability 2. Wolf does not - although you could use a Safeguard (J&S) for another $500. Hm. Just something to think about. Wolf saves you money by not having to buy a $500 laptop, though, so could be more cost effective in the long run, and Byron clearly has a fast Impreza! |

I wonder how one management system could create gobs more power over another... After all, you adjust and adjust and adjust parameters until you finally meet the absolute capacity of an engine. Once you hit that point, then you have to start making other mods to allow more tuning to extract more power...
If you run an NA motor, you can tune the heck out of it until that's it... It won't get any more air into it w/o cams, intake, better exhaust, turbo, etc... There are systems out there that are better than TEC2... Autronic, Motec... Act like a millionaire... Get Magneti Marelli... And there are worse. But really, to put down the EM TEC2 because you need to have a laptop doesn't warrant any merit at all... You can tune the TEC2 on the fly... Hell, you can even reprogram it on the fly... Better yet, your Super Tuner (Sean) can live 150 miles away and tune for you via e-mail... And the fact that you can data-log a HUGE amount of parameters is a plus as well. I had a 3500.00 engine management budget, and chose to buy Shiv's package for the quality of the product, the integrity and service of the person selling it, and the proven performance... SOOOOOOoooooo, B-spec, if you're chucking those TEC2's, send them down my way. I'll pay for the shipping... |
