The '95 GTI is LIGHTER than an RS, not heavier. The current GTI is bigger and heavier. I had a '95. It was very nice and much faster than my RS. The gearing was very well matched to the torque curve, which made it faster in the real world than the power to weight ratio would imply.

I'd like to see what a cam and maybe some headwork would do for the RS, though, it feels like that is holding the power back.
i think you'll just run into gearing. we have fairly short gears which is great for something like rallying but bad for top end speed. not to mention our staggering .36 CFD. top end just isn't what the impreza was meant to do.

Personally, I didn't go looking for a car that could do 140mph.

I think that we all agree that the GTI has a slight edge on the RS in a drag race, I just want everyone to stop acting like the VW is a rocket-sled. You don't have to go so far as a turbocharger to beat a stock GTI!

The gearing definitely leaves a lot to be desired too on the RS, as does the aerodynamics, but even high 3rd gear where air flow isn't too important yet, I can feel the power 'fall flat'. Jon is right though about the VR6 gearing, it is almost perfect. With a r&p from a Jetta in my Corrado I could get ~ 105mph in 3rd gear at redline (and about 95 with the stock r&p), I think I need to be in 5th to get that fast in my RS I miss my VR6 but I still love my turbo Subaru, they're just two different cars.

if you want to REALLY and i mean really beat him..swap in a STI v3 motor and tranny (non-short ratio ) and then build that to around 400 horse...hehehe..that should cure what ails ya..and most other cars as well

(personally i think try the bolt on route i suggested firts, then if that is not enough for YOU (as long as YOUR happy with the car..who cares who you beat and who you loose to..as long as your having fun at the drag strip ).

RyanC, perhaps your turbo RS would be faster with longer gearing able to reach 105mph in only 3rd, but a stock 2.5RS sure as hell wouldn't be!

Let's not forget that the 2-3 shift is what really kills our 0-60 times. We have to shift at 50mph or we hit the limiter in 2nd. That shift is easily worth a few tenths, so comparing magazine numbers isn't always 100% accurate. Keep both cars to 2nd gear in a restricted race and it would be interesting to see which one would get to 50mph first.

i like the gearing on our cars. its great in the dirt. the one time i took my car to the strip, i beat everyone i raced to the 1/8 mile, though they were already doing 10-15mph faster than me.

Actually in comparison, the Gti Vr6 is a rocket sled... heh... just my personal opinion... I've owned one of them before... once it hits 3rd... it just rips to 180km/h like there is no tomorrow...

Like I said before, it has to be one of the most underrated cars ever... a good driver in a Vr6 can beat TypeRs in 1/4miles

And I'm talking about stock vs. stock...

Can Subies do that? I think not... But who bought Subes for dragging anyway?

Wow must be a lot of pro drivers on here. Pulling times .5 to 1 second faster than all the major magazine testers is pretty impresive. Can't anyone accept the fact that a stock RS just isn't that fast?

My friend had a '97 GTI VR6 w/ exhaust, intake and chip. I would keep up with him off the line in my '98 RS with intake, MRT full exhaust, and more driving skill. Once we got into ~70mph range, he would take off. If you want to beat him, learn to shift REALLY well and that will give you a bit of time.

The brut force method of turbo or NO2 is fun too tho.

I wooped on him up to about 60 and then he passed me. I dropped the clutch at 5000Rpm, but besides that my cars stock. My friends 98 VR6 is stock and he said he shifted at redline? Is it me?

when my car was bone stock, i was bumper to bumper with a VR6 until we got above 90 (not recommended). and with an an intake on my car, i g-teched at 6.8 being my quickest 0-60 and that was on an uneven road with road salt, so i know i would do faster on a track. I can't wait until i get my cat-back system from larry. will have to do the g-tech again.

I raced a GTi (same year, same model) and had him until 3rd gear. I could hear his intake howling and my car was still STOCK.

They aren't THAT quick.

Ok, Im an EX V-duber. The GTi VR6 IS that fast, The cars are very highly underrated. If you want to beat him, take the twisty route. The cars may only be Front drivers, but those VR6's are mean ass motors. I haven't found any to race against down here, but I will pick a fight asap.....and then say" lets go to the drag strip to settle this"

This puzzles me a bit. I'm not to familiar with gearing and all the details of it. My car shifts out of 1st@30-31mph, 2nd@60-61mph and 3rd@93mph. Is the gearing in automatics all that different because the RS has an extra gear?

As far as our drag coefficient, yes it's pretty bad. At least we have good torque so when you are in 5th gear, if you have significant power, your revs would fall somewhere in the torque peak (4100-4300rpm I believe) helping to push that car and make it go.

You all have some great cars that can get up and go. What we have to our advantage is that we better utilize our power since our tires don't go spinning for the first 60ft or so. That's why we can get decent 1/4 mile times without having to have as high a trap speed as other cars just getting traction after the start. For example: An ITR has the same trap speed as I or just a little lower (96mph range) in the 1/4 mile. Our cars can better utilize our power because their 1/4 mile time typically falls in the 14.5-14.6 range while I just got my best 1/4 mile time of 13.2 with a trap speed of 98mph. Even when I had the same trap speed as the ITR, I was still getting in the 13.8-13.9 range. That's Subaru AWD for you!

I would be a little hesitant going stock for stock from a rolling start or highway but from a standstill, you scoobies rock. Utilize it's strong point and go with that.

inzomniak,

I never answered you question about why I bought the car. No, I didn't buy it for dragging. Lol! I just got tired of getting my arse whooped by the likes of VR6s', Civics and practically every mobile vehicle on the road and track. *sigh* The import bug bit me hard. My dealership told me they could get me this Subaru Wagon but did the 'bait-and-switch' to get me to buy the wagon I have now. Those bast*rds. Hehe!

I think your mph observations for your shifts is a little off. Understandable though, since every speedometer has some error built into it, and it's hard to tell exactly what mph you're at when you shift because you're not usually staring at the speedo in those situations, or at least you shouldn't be.

Anyway, according to some car math, our 2nd gear 2.5RS Manual tops out at 56mph in 2nd gear, assuming stock tire size. My own personal observations hold this to be true. Of course this is at the stock redline of 6250rpm. That is why we need to shift. If you're shifting at what appears to be 60mph, then either you have altered your overall tire diameter, or for the reasons mentioned above.

Here's the formula so you can see:
(Overall Gear Ratio=Trans gear ratio X Differential Ratio)

Formula: mph = (rpm x tire diameter) / (Overall gear ratio x 336)
2nd Gear Ratio = 2.111
Final Drive Ratio = 4.11
Tire Diameter = 24.9"(205/55/16)
Redline = 6250rpm

Plugging all that in....
(6250 X 24.9)/(2.111 X 4.11 X 336)=~56mph
If we had a slightly higher redline, say 6700rpm, we could hit 60mph in 2nd gear, which would undoubtedly drop our recorded 0-60 times a few tenths.

Catfish,

Perhaps you are right. Thing is, while I was testing this out I was staring at the speedo. If anyone is in the area and remember this post, you are more than welcome to look at the speedo while testing this out. Maybe my chrome rims play a part in this even though they are the same size as stock. Perhaps the different ECU or even the speedometer itself is in error like you stated, showing it shifting at 60-61mph. In any case at least you have a formula we can work with.
