Ok, so I gather either the 4eat is going out or you want a 5 spd swap right?

Let us know what it is and we can go from there.

I know this is a month old, but found it most relevant to my current project. I have a 98' Legacy GT 5MT, with a dead motor and bad tranny, and am pulling a good ej22 motor out of a 98' Impreza Outback Sport, and just bought a 2005 Legacy GT 5MT Tranny for the 98 GT since it's current tranny is fubar'd. Couple noob questions: Will the 05 Tranny have the correct number of bolts/studs to line up with the 98 ej22? (which is currently connected to a 5MT, but since the final drives are different between the OBS and legacy, and my rear diff is rusted bad on the OBS, I opted for a new tranny) Should I use the wiring harness and/or ECU from the OBS or GT? Also was advised I need WRX front axles for the 05 Tranny... thanks

98 Impreza EJ22 will bolt in and plug right into a 1998 Legacy GT EJ25. No wiring or ECU needed.

Use the 1998 single port exhaust manifold. The EJ25 is dual port exhaust. The manifolds easily interchange. Remove EJ25 manifold, bolt up EJ22 manifold.

Trans will bolt in just fine.
Front axles - use the 05 front axles and knock the tone ring off the outer joint? That works on 00-04 axles and will for 05's if they use the same hub-side set up.
I'm unsure of overall transmission length, multiple speed sensors, etc?

are you trying to install an EJ25 into a 1991 legacy?

1994 and earlier are OBDI and not compatible but you have some options:

1. bolt the 1991 heads onto the EJ25 block - then you just use the 1991 intake and electronics.

2. install the 1991 wiring harness onto the EJ25 intake manifold. then drop the entire lump into the car - it'll be an EJ25 with 1991 wiring/electronics.

i'm unfamiliar with doing it that way on 1994 and earlier stuff as they're all rusted away and i avoid them like that plague anyway. but it works in other swaps and these are so similar it probably does here as well.

Since I don't know 1994 stuff...i'm starting to guess right now - so the below is a mix of probable and possible:

you'd want to install any 1991 sensors that are different from the EJ25 sensors. you can check opposed forces or ebay for which sensors are the same or not.

TPS is certainly different - swap the 1991 TPS onto the EJ25 - if it works, i'm unsure?
Or swap the entire 1991 throttle body with TPS/idle controller onto the EJ25...again
i'm unsure.

knock sensor, TPS, idle control, cam, crank, and ignition coil are the major ones.

check each of those part numbers, interchanges, and find out which ones are different and how to work around it - namely TPS and idle control are the only two i'd be concerned about, the rest are easy.

[quote=69subaru360;24324557]Yes, this is a very common and easy swap. I have done almost 20 of the phase 1 EJ25 > EJ22 swaps. Cheap and reliable, everything just plugs in and works, everyone that I did has a happy owner![/QUOTE

I'm looking to do a 96 ej22 legacy L swap with a manual tranny into
A 97 Legacy GT with and automatic tranny. What would it take to do this and how hard would it be?

So after reading this thread, it seems to me that people prefer the EJ22 to the EJ25 DOHC. I just finished swapping an EJ25D from a 97 Legacy GT into my 96 Impreza OBS. Should I have just kept the EJ22? I'd hate to hear that. I'm not overly concerned about the EJ25 I got because the PO had done the head gaskets and the coolant that came out was clean when I did the swap.

people don't necessarily prefer the EJ22 - plenty of people have swapped to the bigger motor and prefer more power.

The EJ22 swap needed some space, write ups, and was a good option for some people. Also, there was a sweet spot a few years ago where EJ25's were really expensive - like $1,000+ and the cars that needed them weren't worth that much - particlarly in the rust belt where you don't want to spend $2,000 - $3,000 on somethign that's rusty. So a good alternative was the EJ22 - which back then could be found really cheap.

But now, a few years later - they're all older, cheaper, rustier - EJ25D's are getting equally old, less demand and cheaper, EJ22's are only going to get harder to find, the vehicles are dated, and age and rust are driving 90's values down enough that it's less of an issue now.

up to you if you have space, want to keep it, but sure keep it if you can.

best if the heads were resurfaced and Subaru or MLS quality headgaskets were used.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess people say they're [ej22] better constructed motors. I did inspect the ej25 before I decided on the swap. It's already had a HG job done on it with the MLS gaskets installed because I can see them on the seam. Not sure if the heads were resurfaced, and I'm not sure how I'd check it after the fact.

I have the iac valve from the 2.2 as well but it is a 3 prong connector and the 2.5 one is a 6 prong connector any one delt with this ?

Default Vacuum lines

This is the closest related post I could find, but I need some advice. The vacuum line that splits off the fuel regulator and the intake manifold off of a 99' (which is the engine I'm running) intake has an electric pressure switching valve, where as the same line off a 95' (the body of the car the 99' is in) runs to a charcoal canister and back into the fuel reg or the tank. So who has ideas on how to combine these two systems into one? Or am I fine just plugging that extra line?

Yeah, what do you do with the charcoal canister lines when swapping a 95 2.2 in place of a 2.5 in a 98/99 car?
Plug them or do you just install the canister setup from the 95 engine?

I am in the middle of putting a 95 auto 2.2 into a 97 manual car. I have the engine in, so far i have noticed the AC compressor mounts are different as well as maybe the compressors. Did you have any issue with bolting the ac, ps, alternator up?

95 will have the heavy Iron black mount for the a/c pump and the 97 will have the aluminum one. Yes, they are different, just swap them around and you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure the power steering bracket is the same from 95-99, but not 100 percent sure.

Anyone have a clue about the charcoal cansister stuff?

--Maybe someone here can help me out. I recently bought a cheap 2005 Saabaru that someone had already swapped a Phase II EJ22 in but they did not change the ECU. The thing runs great but I keep getting a P2096 code (there are no exhaust leaks before the CAT and new rear 02 sensor did not fix issue)

Anyone out there have thoughts on how I can get around this?

I know I'm dragging up a really old thread but it seems relevant. I've got a 99 legacy 2.5 I just put a 97 2.2 in and all I get is backfiring. I was under the impression this swap was plug and play am I missing something?
