06 Subaru STI I need help for the community!
Ok guys im going to try and make this short, sweet, and to the point as much as possible.
2006 STI with 107k miles. Engine got a misfire cylinder 1. Took it to subaru under warranty and they replaced the engine. 250 miles later my turbo goes out.(im thinking they didnt clean my oil lines and debris from the previous engine went into my turbo.) Shaft play and a blown gasket with oil in my downpipe. I know there is metal in my oil right now (from the rebuild and im thinking there may be metal from the journal bearing but im not sure yet as i have not drained the oil and had it tested) They were trying to get me to pay 2k+ for a new turbo but i gave them a bunch of flack and they are accepting some responsibility, in their words, (cause they want to be nice). They said they would install a new vf39 turbo for free i just have to pay for the turbo(1.5k). And that they would also "flush my engine out with a two step process". The thing is they cant do the flush without a turbo being put on there. What im worried about is that i think they fcked up on my rebuild and i dont want to pay 1.5k for a turbo thats going to possibly malfunction and further mess up my new engine. I really think they botched my rebuild but am not sure how to prove it. i didnt hear any crazy noises when my turbo went out and the only way i noticed that my turbo had gone out is because one morning i fired it up and a plume of white/grey smoke came out. Im not sure to what extent how damaged my turbo is yet and will know more tomorrow when i go into the dealership. BTW this is John Hine Subaru in Temecula california. I would not recommend this dealership to my worst enemy. This place has been such a headache.... I dont know what i should do next. For 1.5k i can get a very nice turbo and install it and tune it. But i wouldnt have a warranty and i dont want to burn through a brand new turbo if i dont go through the dealer as it wont have a warranty for that type of **** im assuming.... im so confused and dont know what to do... she is in otherwise perfect condition and ive put so much time and effort into rebuilding this sti. They cant guarantee they are able to flush everything out because of the new engine... I really need your guys' help on this one....

Find a subaru specific shop
So it definitely sounds like its too late at this point but I would get the opinion of an aftermarket Subaru shop. We have a couple her in Denver, Flat Iron and subaperformance.
Just go in and see what their opinion is. See if they have run into something like this. Just remember they're going to play two hands. 1. Screw those guys cause we do xyz better 2. Bring your car here so we can shove charges down your throat. Id try to find a multitude of shops and get their opinion. That's what I'd do. |

Thank you for your input. Im definitely going to get a couple of opinions as where i am located there is two reputable shops. Subiworks and Metro Performance.
I totally agree with you though about the two trains of thought. Ill have to keep that in mind. |

You can pick up a vf39 off ebay for under 600... why not do that?
First priority is getting your current car running before even thinking about upgrading anything yeah? |

What is the warranty this car is under? It is older (2006) and higher mileage (107,000). Was this a car you bought used from this dealer and purchased an additional warranty?

So your had a CEL, took it to the dealer to find its a misfire on cylinder 1 and they just rebuilt the motor. Who does that? You should have ask more questions or got a second option. Your in California, is there not another dealer around? What was the cause of the misfire? There are so many questions here.

If they will replace the turbo for free have you thought about getting a cheap used VF39 on here for $300-400 and having them install that? Or just install it yourself and then have them do the flush?
Is there any type of warranty on the engine that they installed? And what did they actually replace? You say they replaced the engine, but did they replace just the shortblock? New heads, etc.? |

Wait, so you got Subaru to replace the engine on a 13 year old car with 107K under warranty?
You should consider buying a lottery ticket. |

They wont replace the turbo for free its just the installation that is free. Installing a used turbo is an option im considering as well. they warranty on the engine they put in is a 12k miles/1 year
they replaced Shortblock, heads, pistons, valve springs. As far as the warranty, i did pay for it. They offered me a 3 year 36k mile warranty for 4k and i took it. Engine blew a month before warranty expired!!! I am very lucky. |

Only reason im thinking of upgrading is because i have to buy a new turbo anyways. I was thinking of getting a used vf39, installing it myself, have them clean the engine, break the car in, and then sell the vf39 and upgrade and tune. Wasnt thinking of just putting on an upgraded turbo. What makes me want to go through subaru is the warranty that the turbo will have. Quote:

I already knew what caused it. Previous owner had uppipe/downpipe/bov/ and short ram intake without a tune. It was just a matter of time so thats why i bought the warranty. |

Wait a minute ...
Did they replace the engine or did they rebuild the engine? You are using both terms so it's hard to tell. If they installed a new engine, then you should not be having turbo failure due to metal shavings. If you ONLY had a cyl 1 misfire, that shouldn't cause metal shavings. If your previous engine had metal shavings, then the turbo damage was already done prior to the engine replacement / rebuild ( which one was it again? ) Quote:

So, we have two exact same original posts in two different forms asking exactly the same questions with different answers.
Would be a good thing to have the Moderators merge these 2 posts together. |

OP, I see you, more or less, in the same boat as this guy.
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2879878 I agree with Jack, at this point. Time to think about something newer with no major problems. |
