My EJ222 Custom Turbo Kit
Got a 2000 Outback Sport 5spd with the SOHC, Phase 2, EJ222 Motor. Looking to put together a kit and run 5-6psi. Hoping to be right around 200-220hp. Here is what I have put together, I'm looking for input on what I've chosen. This is a budget build but I think it should work great.
-Used TD04L-13T Turbocharger (5psi Actuator)- $200 -Custom Turbo Up-Pipe w/ 02 bung and stainless 3-bolt TD04 flange (Modified stock headers)- $200 -HKS 02-07 WRX Catless Downpipe 33006-BF001-$150 -Forester XT/WRX Top Mount Intercooler and BOV- $130 -Vortech 6Z110-111 (12:1) Rising Rate Fuel Pressure Regulator- $200 -Used/Cleaned and Flow Tested EJ20 WRX 575cc Top Feed Fuel Injectors- $175 -Turbo compressor outlet/discharge-to-top mount intercooler charge pipe (Unsure of what to use here)- ~$100 -eBay Turbo Oil/Water Line Kit for Mitsushi TD04- $55 -eBay Turbo Oil Drain/Return Fitting for Oil Pan- $15 -WALBRO 255LPH Fuel Pump w/ Install Kit 400-791- $80 -NGK V-POWER Copper Spark Plugs Heat Range 7 (BKR7E-11)- $10 -Split Second VC3-100 Voltage Clamp- $80 -AutoMeter 4302 Boost Gauge- $75 -AutoMeter 4379 AFR Gauge- $200 -AutoMeter 4347 Oil Temp Gauge- $65 -GlowShift 1996-2000 Subaru Impreza Triple Dashboard Pod-GS-D03- $33 Total: $1,855

Looks good, although if you're only going to be running 5-6psi you won't need the FPR from what I understand. Save yourself a couple hundo!

5-6 psi you won't need an intercooler either.

From my understanding the factory ECU, MAP sensor and fuel system are able to compensate for everyday changes in manifold pressure and they have a set range that they they are able to compensate for. I'm uncertain of what manifold pressures the ecu's maps are able to work with. 5-6psi is about 40% of what the motor normally sees (14.7psi atmospheric pressure) SO, if the ecu, map sensor and fuel system can deal with a 40% increase, then I guess im good and won't need a RRFPR to boost fuel delivery under boost. I can just let the ecu and the map sensor (along with the voltage clamp) read manifold pressure/boost and deliver the extra fuel? My list includes 575cc WRX injectors, The WRX makes about 220hp which is a 65% (or 78hp) increase in power over my EJ222. The SOHC, Phase 2, EJ22 injectors are 280cc/min, not big enough to flow and support 220hp at least not at a reasonable duty cycle, so I'm thinking WRX injectors it is. Intercooler: Well, there is alot of debate nowadays in the automotive world over intercoolers and their effectiveness. I mean your right, 5-6psi isn't much so overall there won't be a whole lot of excessive intake air heat from pressure but the air is still comming from the turbo which itself is probably around 600 degrees when warmed up so there is some heat soak to consider. I will probably run a top mount intercooler, Subaru ran em from the factory on every turbo car they made for some reason im sure. It all depends on what aspects of the engines performance would be effected exactly. Idk for sure but WITH an intercooler id say I'd probably be looking at a 10-20 degree drop in IAT's, while that would benefit with a little extra horsepower, would I like it without one? UDSM Turbo Legacy 90-94 did not have an intercooler. Stock boost is 8.7 psi. However, the engine does have piston oil jets. But most people have added a tmic to them at this point.

Have you ever heard of Project Lambda? Its a relatively new tuning software that can flash the ecu's in the early 2000's Subarus. I'm pretty sure your car would be able to use it, but you'd have to check it out to be sure.
It has a lot of capabilities - scaling new injectors and a different map sensor (if you wanted to go that route) is simple and is only a small portion of what the software can really do - I'm using it in my Holset boosted SOHC EJ257. Plus, the developer, Mike, is super helpful and a great tuner. I'm getting etuned by him currently, and it's going great. I'll second the Project Lambda software. I am slowly turbo'ing my EJ25 sohc but have played with the software a bit.
With some basic mods and delta 1500 cams my ca was very lean above 5000rpm, now it sits at 12:1 a/f ratio right up to the limiter with some basic changes in the software. Cant wait to get the turbo in and the 550cc blue injectors and start having more fun! |
