Question Oil Filter for 2012 Impreza

So I took my Impreza into the dealer for service today and when I reviewed the invoice, I was surprised to see that I was charged less for an oil filter today than I had been on a previous visit. After some research, I found:

Filter specified in manual: 15208AA160
Filter previously supplied by dealer: 15208AA160
Filter used by dealer today: 15208AA15A

160 is a Tokyo Roki filter and 15A is a Honeywell filter. I'm not too sure how the two may otherwise be different.

Now the question is, if the 15A filter fits, can I just leave it in until the next time I change the oil? Or should I return to the dealer and request they replace it with the 160?

Thanks in advance for weighing in on this.

I've only seen the 160 referenced as the correct filter. I'd at least call them and ask what the correct filter is. I'd also document this if possible in case you have any issues.

I heard Subaru is getting rid of the Roki 160 filter. So stock up.

^^This. I just bought a six-pack of the 160 filters on eBay.

I'm sure the filter the dealership installed is the one that Subaru currently specifies, so I'm guessing they will tell you that you have the right filter, and they're right.

But I think I've heard that the Roki filters are better made than the Honeywell filters, which I why I bought a bunch of them.

At the end of the day, I'm confident that either filter will get the job done just fine. Subaru isn't going to approve a filter that isn't up to the task. But since I do my own oil changes, and since I heard the Rokis are better, that's what I bought.

why would the roki filters be better? doesn't subaru have a fairly tight spec on this sort of thing?

Both are built to Subaru specs. Usually the bypass valve is rated to 23 psi. The blue Honeywell made one is built to this same 23 psi spec, but the rest of the construction is just like the Fram orange can. The Tokyo Roki made one has metal end caps compared to the fiber end caps of the Honeywell made one. For some reason. The new FB25 specs the 15A filter over the 160?

+1 stocked up as soon as I learned of the change. I don't do honeywell, i know many oem car manufacturers get their filters from them but I will never have any honeywell filter in any of my cars, imho i do not think highly of them based on issues in the past. Though this may have changed burn me once shame on you, burn me twice well.

puts on flame suit: it has been my experience that honeywell specifically the fram filters are nonsense that have the ability to flake off in engine at times. I am not saying all of them will however in the cough honda cough vehicle those filters when cut a way you can see are put together with glue and cardboard. Then there was that lovely recall on filters
http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/2...TES01/71108018 so forth so on. I posted about this a while back in a previous thread, at 19620 my car started to shard oil, took it in for repair under warranty what followed next was the signing my life away papers which stated that if the failure was due to the use of a non honda oil filter I would be SOL. Now obviously I did not use the honda oil filter because well its a fram and I didn't want to risk it. I signed the papers they checked and saw that oil was from timing belt cover which there was clearly a write up about this in the honda monthly service guide, conceded the issue and sent me on my way with a honda filter which I then again removed immediately. My personal opinion from my honda is why I do not trust any honeywell made filter, this is not to say there aren't thousnds of ppl out there using honeywell filters and having a marvelous time.

Aeoporta, if I'm understanding your story correctly, you never personally had a Honeywell/Fram filter fail on you. You simply got nervous when the Honda dealership considered blaming your car's problem on the non-Honda filter.

Or did I misunderstand you?

no I did not personally have the failure as I got rid of them before anything happen. I did not get nervous when they blamed the aftermarket filter I just told them good luck proving that one. I opted to remove the filter before anything happened and used purolator pure one instead. As I wrote above there were plenty of ppl who continued to use and still do the honeywell filters without any issues, however based off the risk I did not deem it wise to take the chance so in the garbage the went. IMHO when it comes to honeywell I will stay as far away as possible, thats probably my ocd talking but I can sleep well at night.

Honeywell is a huge manufacturing company that makes a million different products. I wouldnt think theyd have particularly good oil filters. As far as i can see on their website, Roki is primarily specialized in filtration.

A long explanation:

2012
looks like honda is now replacing its honeywell filters with the previous generation

15400-PLM-A02 View FILTER, OIL (HONEYWELL)

http://www.odyclub.com/forums/14-per...-not-good.html

http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/f...hp/t-1328.html

So when are we gonna have a debate over hondas use of z1 atf vs their newly revised fluid ATF DW-1
http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=33349
there were the recalls, the tsb oil jet kit, 7gen accords also affected even with new transmission design, 8thgen failed less but still prone to issues with at transmission.
late 2010/early 2011 honda introduces synthetic transmission fluid out of the blue.
much like the oil burning which has been reported in the impreza the honda burns oil (tsb issued) still and the at tranny is still not running so well.

or maybe how many times did honda change its mtl fluid to try an alleviate 3rd gear pop out even changing design of transmission.
http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/mecha...-3rd-gear.html

FYI: it still pops out even after the new mtl fluid and tsb changes
gm syncromesh/penzoil syncromesh, redline mtl, and etc prevent the pop out honda mtl utter and complete failure.

These issues all influence my opinion of stuff. I can do mazda as well

Yeah, I used to be diehard Honda fan, but their cars of the last decade have been uninspiring. Honda definitely lost its mojo.

Happily, I'm reading very good reports of the 2013 Accord. Sounds like Honda might be back in the game again, at least with the new Accord.

2 late for me, i use to have a 2010 civic ex, 09 accord ex, 09 odyssey.
Only the odyssey remains as its near the dying stage aka 90k

Just had my friends pilot radiator blow up on his drive to family on christmas eve, like your tdi this happened stranding him in PA, his realtives had to come and get him. He has 72k on the clock

http://www.automotiveforums.com/t106...r_problem.html

http://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/P..._failure.shtml

He opted for the 1500 fix dealership said change fluid at 5k and they can't guarantee nothing will happen to the tranny as they were only able to get out 95% of the coolant. I advised him he needs to ditch it before the 5k bill hits.

I got up close to someones accord today, the chrome on the front turns me off also in the rear, the car looks very nice and the reviews on the coupe especially v6 have been quite nice. Honda died for me
with the 2012 civic too much of a dud, and the 2013 I was pretty unimpressed with the changes. A friend got the crv but wanted the subaru, we are planning a car trading day that way she can get her fix and I can um leave her crv at home

It's really too bad. Over the years, I've owned:
  • 1981 Accord Hatchback. First car bought out of college (used) before I knew anything about cars. Had been in an accident but I didn't know how to recognize that when I bought it (I can now spot bodywork from 2 miles away). Sold it after a year. Lesson well learned. Not the car's fault that it sucked so bad.
  • 1982 Civic Hatchback. This was my wife's first car out of college, bought used. Served her well.
  • 1982 Accord Hatchback. Bought used. This car served me well.
  • 1989 Civic DX Hatchback. Stripper car, and first car I bought new. Served me well.
  • 1999 Civic DX Hatchback. Bought new. I still have this car with 136k miles on it. Runs great. This is the car my teenage kids use now.
  • 2003 Ody EX-L. This is my wife's current car. It has 130k miles, so I can't complain too much. Tranny was replaced under warranty. Power sliding door often don't open when it gets cold outside. Rear leftgate is rusting. Meh, could have been a lot worse, could have been a lot better.

The problems with the Ody, and my dislike of the cars Honda was selling during the 2000-now years, made me start looking at other brands. Gave the TDI a try; disaster, as you know.

Decided to go with a Japanese car again in 2012, but wanted something more interesting than a Civic or Corolla, so I came away with the Impreza. Thought (and still think) the boxer engine and the symmetrical AWD make it an interesting, fun car. I'm hoping to get many, many happy miles out of it.

Reviews I read of the Accord Coupe with the V6 engine an the manual tranny sounded brilliant. I need a car that's more practical than that, but I was glad to read gushing reviews of the car, after so many ho-hum years from Honda.

If the black filters are not available, what would be the next best option?

Still waiting for those non-OCD (FRAM/Honeywell) oil filter options to appear on the market in greater numbers as well.

Hmm, some similarities I can relate to:

'89 Buick Skylark, Quad4 - first car I bought new, totaled in '91 @ 71K miles

’99 Explorer Limited - Has 157k miles, my teenager is driving.

2002 Ody EX- my wife currently drives. It has 179K and the transmission was replaced under warranty @ 85K back in 2005.

I traded in my ’09 Civic to get this Impreza because of the cracking problem with ’06-’09 Honda’s R18 engine block. I also wanted something more interesting than the bland Civic and Corolla but with good fuel economy too. The all new Impreza’s arrival was perfect timing and I hope it lasts a long time too.

I just bought 6 160 filters for $40 free shipping. That should last me ~3 years, and by then, I would assume more options will be available.
