Default My 2009 Track Build

I have been tracking my car for several years now and I finally decided to start making it a true track car. I will be racing in NASA TTS this year, and may do a couple Redline Time Attack events as well. Next year...hopefully NASA ST-2 but we'll see how it goes. I'll continue to update the thread as I complete things but here's what I've gotten done so far.

First was to remove all stereo equipment. I had a bunch of stuff in there, and this saved a ton of weight. When you add up the head unit, amp, speakers w/ adapters, sirius receiver, and all the wiring it comes out to a bunch of weight. Here's a pic of the head unit blockoff plate. Nothing fancy, just some ABS I had laying around.

Then I added a fuel surge tank. The tank and fuel pump mount were made for me by Kelly at Covert Performance. Capacity is about 1.7 liters. I'm also using a Bosch 044 fuel pump and Aeroquip -6 Socketless hose and fittings. This should eliminate the fuel starvation problems I've been having.

I also decided to add a quick release steering wheel to make it easier to get in and out. I also wanted to eliminate the airbags anyway so it was a no brainer. I went with a Sparco hub and quick release and an OMP Targa wheel.

And another item from Covert Performance, a chromoly subframe brace. This piece looks amazing, I'm planning on going out to the garage to install it later this afternoon.

I also had him weld on some Dzus tabs for the rear mounting point of my undertray/splitter (more on this later).

Stay tuned for more updates, I'm not anywhere close to being done yet

I really want to do the surge tank. Can you give more info on all the parts needed and the install procedures.

Nice stuff.

I too have a custom subframe brace in route from Kelly. Just hasn't shown up yet

I would like to try the surge tank route. (and some other stuff)

BoostJunkie, at what fuel level did you start to starve at?

I'll send you a pm. Dan has almost exactly the same setup as me. Since your motor is a little tamer you can use an external walbro instead of the bosch pump.

Thanks, judging by some of the other cars in my class I'll need it.

Sure I'll PM you a list of parts in a minute. The install is really straightforward, I'll include a rough explanation as well.

You're gonna love the subframe. I was getting fuel starvation usually when I dropped below 1/4 of a tank, maybe a little more. In high speed turns on r-comps with a bit of downforce the car can sustain enough grip to starve even when there's a decent amount of fuel still in the tank.

Yeah the Bosch is even a bit overkill for my power level but I figured I'd give myself some headroom.

It's going pretty well. I still need a diff, fire supression, front half of the cage, and some little stuff, but it's coming along. I'm hoping to take the comp school and race in July at VIR. Are you doing TrackDaze in March?

We'll see about TrackDaze. I'm hoping to have the car ready and get a trailer before the February nasa event so I can get my TT evaluation and do that event, and then they have another TT at the end of March. If I can afford to do trackdaze in between I definitely will, or if I miss the february nasa event.

Look'n good, Dan. My 044 is under the car... it's too annoying to have in a wagon cabin.

Yeah it's pretty loud, if my car was a DD I don't think I could handle it.

Yeah right, that would require you actually getting the car out of the garage and in working condition Seriously though, the main thing I'm worried about in ST2 is competing with vettes. Given the same power to weight, their aero, power delivery, and tire width advantages are pretty significant.

would also like some info on the surge tank.

I'll be turning my RS into a full track car once I get the swap running correctly.

Nice setup so far Dan.

We need to get a surge tank setup for "our" GT30 wrx. It experiences fuel starvation with anything less than 2/3 of a tank. It has to be topped off after every session on track. Still trying to find an intank solution as it's not a full on track car...yet.

The surge tank itself was made by Covert Performance to my specs. If you like I can post a full list of parts that were used, I have it saved on my hard drive somewhere.

Thanks Tony, the fuel starvation issue seems to be pretty common, especially with earlier WRXs and RS's. The only in tank solution I know of (unless you fab your own) is the MRT. It's pretty expensive and when I spoke to them about it they said it's still not as effective as an external surge tank. If your car is a daily though you'd have to be pretty tolerant with an external fuel pump, it's pretty loud and annoying. Here's a link to the MRT in case you haven't seen it. http://mrtperformance.com.au/compone...art/Itemid,32/

this is true, although this weekend she'll get a once over before i tear into her. Let me know when you are getting closer to completion, its always fun to mess with people on track. I'm sure i can give you a few pointers on exploiting the rules for your car Trust me, i love my vette, but I do want to see a competitive suby!

Feel free to give me tips as well, as I'm converting my car to an ST2 machine.

SWEET!!! are you racing this year Dunk?

Here are the two big ones
1) 5th and 6th gear SUCK on the US 6 tranny's
2) weight, start cutting stuff out... I'm serious, you have a HUGE disadvantage, being a physically larger car.
3) power... this is a big one, they only place they measure power is at the peak HP and TQ. Vette guys do this all the time, and retard the ignition up top. That gives us insane mid range, that are close to our peak numbers. You'll need to get creative, but it would not surprise me to run more boost mid range and have it taper off up top to do the same.

those are some big ones. Also, look at the tire rules to see just how much you can fit under your car without penalty.

oh, and my advice is not free... i require at least one ride in both of your cars :-D lol

Ross,

Don't want to pull Dan's thread off topic. You can check out my build here.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ghlight=duncan

Not sure if I'm racing this year. I'm having a baby at the end of March (no comp school that month), taking the instructor clinic in February and might be deployed by the July school. We'll have to see.

Yeah ST2 requires a pretty serious commitment to be competitive in a subaru. Duncan, you have the right idea with all the crazy weight reduction and the widebody to fit big tires. I think the only real advantage we have is if it rains. Either way, once I can afford to I will be stripping and caging the car so I figure I might as well take it to st-2
