Default Are stock cam sprockets metal or plastic?

I’m changing my head gaskets in my 2007 SOHC Impreza, 5-speed manual. I was taking out the passenger-side head and put it down hard at just the right angle and cracked the passenger-side sprocket. Damn, ok, something else to replace. So I go looking around for a new or used sprocket and see plastic sprockets AND metal sprockets.

Then I check my drivers side and that sprocket is metal! WTF? So my passenger-side sprocket is plastic and the drivers side is metal. I don’t think it should be this way, I would think either both are plastic or both or metal.

I don’t know the history of the car. I bought it knowing it would need a head gasket resplaced, so that’s what I’m doing. The car actually ran fine when I got it, no overheating.

Went to the junkyard and found two metal sprockets in a 2.5 outback, so I think I will just use those. But I don’t want to use the wrong parts.

Anybody know what came stock on a 2007 Impreza? Could they both have been used when they were built and Subaru just put whatever was lying around?

I read on a different thread somewhere that plastic is used because in a front-end accident, a plastic sprocket will crack into many pieces, stopping the engine from running, but a metal one will keep spinning, possibly causing internal damage. This makes me want to get plastic for both sides.

Thanks for any help

I have seen mixed on a few SOHC Subaru engines, usually all plastic on DOHC engines.

Single cam heads have Metal on the Driver side due to the Cam Sensor Pickup on the back, plastic on the passenger side because reasons...

The heads that don't have the oil control valves are metal both sides (-04 and back), the ones with oil control valves have plastic on the passenger side.

'05+ heads from N/A forester/legacy/impreza should have what you need.

Thank you. I will just replace the cracked sprocket.

And I just realized I put this in the wrong forum, oops! If a moderator can move this to the correct spot that would be great. Thank you!
