Default Just got an email from one of my students

I teach low level high school math at a primarily blue collar, low income school which also happens to be one of the highest population high schools on the east coast. Pretty much I've near given up trying to teach them math and instead I'm focusing on teaching them life skills like writing in correct english and how not to be super ghetto.

Well I just received this email from one of my kids who is going to be a stat girl for the lacrosse team I coach at the school.

Quote:
hey mr [it was spelled way off]

this is [xxx] and im just lettin you kno that i have founded the list of games fo the lacorss team and i have printed themout i just wanted to email you instead of callin you on your fone ..and to just to let you kno that the pic of u on the website looks messed up man they jacked you up fo real well i cee you @school on monday okay
I think my head near assploded reading that.

I'd concentrate on getting them to join the army instead. They sound like excellent cannon fodder for an asian ground war.

My 16 year old cousin is a very smart young lady, but I REFUSE to talk to her online cause she talks the same way. I don't know what it is about these kids. They seem too lazy to give the effort.

So do you think what she wrote is indicative of her English language skill or is she just being the typical teen using txtmsg fmt IRL bc that's how she normally communicates with the rest of her peers?

I c it more they don't know when to type properly. It's the text messege generation, everything is shortened so it takes less time to text. Same as with messenger lingo. Said student may just be too used to lazy typing. I went through something like that when i got back from japan. Three years of broken english, and text messaging like I'm talking to a 3 year old takes it's toll

I don't see the problem here... she emailed that to you today - on a Sunday. It's not like this is during the school week. You know that spelling and grammar and - god forbid - math, only matter when you're at school.

Like whatever.

Here's an idea: don't let students be on sports teams unless they meet some minimal academic standards. If they can't read, write, etc. they should be studying not playing sports.
