Need new calipers, seeking advice
Hey All, long time no posting, still got my 2007 STI, it’s alive and kicking. Today I took it to a mechanic to replace pads and rotors (normally would do it myself but couldn’t this time) and they stripped threads on 2 Brembo calipers while unbolting them. Each caliper is around 800 bucks from a dealer and I need to decide what I want to do before Monday. I haven’t been to this board in a while and wanted to ask you guys what are my other options nowadays besides getting the new calipers. Thanks!

It's kind of a pain but you can repair it with helicoils.

Also, spoke with the mechanic about using helicoils and he said there is not much metal around and drilling bigger holes would make the fix unreliable. But I’m guessing since people been fixing Brembo calipers with helicoils for so long, it’s gotta be reliable enough or we would know it by know, right? |

I'm doing a helicoil on my brembos. My tuner quoted me 20 minutes per caliper if all goes well.

Btw, why did they remove the calipers to replace pads? I just realized this point, like wtf? You don't need to remove the calipers. |

Most mechanics don't deal with fixed brake calipers (like the FHI 4-pots and Brembos) at all. They will deal with more cars with drum brakes before they work on fixed caliper ones. |

Stop making excuses for idiots. There's this thing even mechanics are capable of doing, called research or google.

This response was uncalled for. Completely. I just made a simple observation. If you have beef with what the mechanic did, take it up with them. |

Let's take a look at your post. The mechanic seriously damages the OP's calipers, then leaves him with NO options for repair except buying new ones. And then you have the ****ing gall to suggest that the mechanic probably never worked on fixed calipers in 2021 when a **** ton of cars come with them? Contrarian much? Hmm, after doing more research it seems that Time-Sert is better than Helicoil, more reliable. Does anyone know why Helicoil was chosen to fix Brembo calipers?

I Hulked my threads out from my calipers and used helicoils. Worked just fine.

ok, thanks everyone, snapped threads got repaired with helicoils, calipers reinstalled and the car is back on the road. Wish I had known about helicoils and time certs before it happened, would have saved me some headache and money
