turboing my ej18
Decided i want to take the route of turboing my L. My L is my DD so i will be buying a second ej18e and building it as my wallet permits. here is the set up i will be going with:
ob1 ej18e block(has forged internals except pistons) ob1 ej22e heads(flow great, cheap) 97 ej22e head gaskets(3 layer head gaskets, strong) new head studs(another 1.8t said car failed because he reused the bolts) 91-94 legacy turbo sohc Exhaust Manifold Uppipe Downpipe fuelpump Injectors TD04/ small baller bearing yo TMIC w/ piping wrx stock bpv WRX cold side piping e manage blue what do you guys think about this setup? i won't be boosting over a bar. i did have a couple of questions. its a sohc setup so i'm going to use 91-94 turbo legacy sohc exhaust manifold because A.) can't really use any other & B.) cheaper, easy to get, and i don't need to change crossmembers. which brings up a small, yet limiting factoring: Which up pipes & downpipes are available for this setup? What should i do with the intake? i have a MAF sensor and the other question: Am i missing anything?

IMO, i would go with the wrx manifold, sti up pipe and a catless down pipe. Also, i would just notch the crossmember to fit the up pipe. Lastly, if you want to make more power i would say upgrade to the emanage ultimate. It gives you so much more tuning wise.

I'm using a WRX uppipe/exhaust manifold on my SOHC heads... unless the problem you're having has to do with single-port vs. dual-port heads.

look at almost all the builds (DEF look up turbol's build, just follow what he did, he made very impressive power. The wrx exhaust manifold bolts up to the ej18... look at the subiesport impreza wagon build, they used an aftermarket exhaust manifold.

get an sti up pipe and any aftermarket downpipe for best performance. Also i believe you may have to relocate your water pump, not 100% sure because all the info i have received is from reading the forums.

The turbo water pump's thermostat housing is rotated so as to not get in the the way of the crossover pipe. Believe me, you'll need it.

If I were you I would try to match the HG bore to the engine bore. The EJ18 HG is already 1.52mm thick, if you use the wrx one, you will have a 4mm difference between the gaskets bore size, and the engine's bore size. Granted, using the wrx one lets you fine tune your CR a little better.
You need to use the sohc headstuds (think you put that in your revised post.) The DOHC studs are about an inch too short. If you use the EJ18 HG, you end up with about an 8.2:1 CR, if you use the stock wrx HG, you get around 8.7:1 CR. If you want to run a ful 14-15 psi. (1 bar) I would use the EJ18 HG. As far as the oil for the turbo, there is a galley plug you can buy at any subaru dealer (or better yet, at subarugenuineparts.com) that screws into your block and provides the oil for the turbo, you just need to have a bung welded into your oil pan for the oil return. Last time I checked, the TMIC along with a stock intake manifold is too big for the area it needs to occupy. I cant remember what turboL did, but I would definately ask him about your build. ~Josh~ |

for the headgasket, i was thinking a 8.2:1 CR would be too low. what thickness HG would you suggest to get a median? (8.5:1 CR)? |

hey,
turbo intake manifold will not bolt to your heads without a lot of work, plus I highly doubt it is any better than the NA intake manifold. TMIC is the way to go for spool, but I didnt want the hoodscoop (id rather slide under the radar), so I went fmic. |

Hey guys, I dont mean to interrupt your thread, but my brother just bought a 94 Impreza coupe, its got a 2.2 and OBD1, could I do the same thing to it?? using the same parts list to build with? just asking since were gonna have room in our shop since a few of our projects will be out by then. just asking for advice, and I would liek to turbo my 95 Imp Wagon. Just curious about how to go about this since not too many people bother doing this it seems. Thanks
