![]() The Camaro 1LE 4cyl turbo is a hoot to drive, and is so much more bang for the buck than one gets in the mustang turbo. That you can get them for $24k? Ford can't compete.

People: the BRZ/miata are underpowered Ford: Hold my beer! seriously though, anything less than that TC 2.3L is a waste of time in a chassis that heavy with a... "Grand Touring" suspension setup... I mean, don't get me wrong, for how heavy it is the Mustang is surprisingly controlled and tossable, but it's nothing near the levels of a miata handling/chassis chatting (haven't driven a BRZ, so I can't comment); the Mustang party trick is the DOHC 5.0 under the hood that makes up for the shortcomings in the handling department; had you driven the prior gens you'd understand why I think the S550 does a good job, sure, the GT350 is oodles better in the handling department (did I just use the word oodles?) but whenever I drive an S550 Mustang, I'm not upset, maybe that's because I've driven the Charger and I know how bad it can be, like "late 80's Camaro trying to make itself handle by throwing wide rubber at the problem" bad. I remember trying to make my Fox handle, sub-frame connectors, strut tower brace, tubular K-member, SN95 spindles, full suspension beyond that, & I'm going to call it "fender rolling" but in reality it was trying to cram as much rubber under all four corners as humanly & mechanically possible, tire punishing front camber, and the stickiest rubber on the market. In the end I had a well handling light weight monster that was horrible at normal speeds and under normal driving conditions, but man, windy wooded backroads, I lived for those. The S550 does an amazing job while being comfortable. |

![]() I'm not really sure that the myth of poor handling is accurate with the S550's. The Performance Pack 2 offering is an awesome handler. I get the SC2's have something to do with it but even with them off of my car handles very well for what it is. The amazement is of course the 460 HP 7k rpm engine but the suspension isn't far behind.
As for this I would suspect they offer a 2.7 EB with a bit more HP than the 2.3. The other option I could see is Ford offering the PP2 setup on the 4 cylinder. I imagine with the SC2's and other suspension bits it would be a hoot with a 4 cylinder turbo. Being able to mash the gas and having the car grip and go will do a lot for the fun meter. |

Which unfortunately comes in a "Bro, do you even freeway race?" exterior with port windows that would make a submarine crew claustrophobic. No thanks. Though I'll admit, Mustang bros can be equally retarded. thanks |

![]() Guessing EB 2.3 in a higher state of tune ala Focus RS will be easier way to gol. Done and proven. Throw on PP2 brakes, suspension and tires from the Mustang GT and call it a day. Also needs the TR-6060 as part of the deal. And please, no fake scoops or vents.
Would really like to see Ford pull out all the stops and throw a GT spec 3.5 EB V6 into a GT350R chassis. I'd take that over a GT500. |

![]() They did it.
![]() The 1LE turbo is a very, very, very good autox car. It's fun, athletic, and just powerful enough without being too much to make it a bit more fun than the bigger engines to puch through a course, and... it's lighter. The non 1LE turbo was winning the class for the past couple years, was the car to beat. THey put the 1LE in the class this year... so next year will be something if it all comes to fruition. Thing is, the 1LE turbo can be had cheap. Can Ford follow suit? Or price themselves out of the market? "We made it, but no one is buying." Thats what will be said if the Mustang turbo is heavier, and more expensive. They REALLY have to pay attention to this. --kC |

![]() Expect more of these to come as the stretch out the platform for another few years.
With that said historically some of the best offerings are "parts bin" cars like these. One of the reasons I enjoy my Performance Pack 2 GT so much. |

![]() Sorry with cheap gas prices the V8 Mustang makes far more sense. Even without cheap gas prices I bet this 4 cylinder barely gets better gas mileage if you are constantly in boost.
My guess is that this is just as much, if not more, for external markets where you get taxed based on engine displacement. They might be able to sell more Mustangs in these markets for people who wanted the V8 but the turbo 4 makes more sense. |

Handling improvements should be welcome, though I suspect that the wider stock wheels that come with the handling package will be what the AutoX guys will really care about. A GT with the magneride dampers, active exhaust and wider than 255 rubber is pushing $50k. Curious to see where this lands (with the handling package). |

![]() Almost nailed it except for Ford not going with the TR-6060 transmission. My guesstimate for pricing would put it in the neighborhood of the FoRS. A bit spendy for the "it's not a V8!" crowd, but seems reasonable if it can live up to the performance estimates in the article.
