Default Subaru Acquires 0.3% Stake In Toyota To Develop New Technologies

Look at that mutual commitment!
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...-toyota-stake/

Subaru Corp. said Wednesday it has acquired a 0.3% stake in Toyota Motor Corp. for about ¥70 billion ($673 million) under a capital tie-up deal reached between the two companies in 2019 to boost the joint development of new technologies for autonomous and electric cars.

Toyota raised its stake in Subaru from 16.8% to 20% as planned in February last year, making the smaller automaker into its equity-method affiliate. Since then, Subaru’s earnings have been incorporated into Toyota’s consolidated financial statements.

In September 2019, the two automakers also agreed to jointly develop an electric sport utility vehicle to be sold under each company’s name by the mid-2020s in the United States.

Subaru had planned to hold a stake in Toyota worth up to ¥80 billion or equivalent to the largest Japanese automaker’s additional investment in it following approval from antitrust authorities.

They formed an alliance in 2005 and jointly developed a sports car, branded by Toyota as the 86 and Subaru the BRZ, in 2012.

Nah, they could still do it and develop S210, they will just charge more money, that's all. Coming soon, $70,000 STI S210.

You're assuming they actually had a serious ICE dev program in the first place...
I have been rambling and ranting about the need for a long stroker H4 or H6 for almost 10 years; Subaru finally came out with one last year.
Only took 10 years .

Only $70,000? That’s a bargain compared to the s209 if it doesn’t spontaneously combust when filled with 91.

They will throw that "feature" in for free. It's hardcore living on the 91 edge.

It’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru. I hope they get the tuning and build right on the next gen WRX/STI/BRZ out of the gate.

C’mon, man. You get all that in a sedan only package. What’s not to “love”. Subaru is “love” going to your stealer service department for warranty work or voiding your factory warranty to get the vehicle running properly.

They've already bastardized the name by putting it on several non-Subaru vehicles........why not.

they will keep their current engine families on life support, adding unreliable emission equipment to comply with regulation and spending everything else on electrification tech.

That's what everybody's doing. you think GM is dumping tons of money into a new small block V8?

Not even GM is that stupid. *cough* blackwing V8 *cough*...

How much of Subaru stock does Toyota need to buy before they have a controlling interest? Ford only needed 33.4% of Mazda, I wonder what Toyota's long term plan is.
