Default Engine Swap in '99 Legacy Outback

163K Miles
Automatic Transmission

Instead of fixing the headgasket, I have heard that doing an engine swap can be an even better option.
  • Any advice on pursuing an engine swap?
  • What is the process for finding and purchasing a used engine?
  • Any suggested independent shops to perform the install?
  • Any local people wanting to get involved in doing this work with me? (I don't have a garage, but am very interested in learning how to do this type of engine work.)
  • Is it smarter/more cost effective to replace the headgasket and deal with any warping issues?

I am looking for to make this car operate reliably without breaking the bank. Would love to keep this car for a few years. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Okay. What I would honestly do is grab an EJ22E and put EJ25D heads on it. That will make power with reliability.
