Post Street Mod news

I was talking with Howard Duncan of the SCCA this weekend in Petersburg about Scooby parts. Here is the skinny.

MRT anti-lift/castor kit = legal in SM
Aluminum control arms = legal in SM

He said that the idea behind street mod is to allow the maximum creativity in building a car. So, go lightweight. Im thinking all the hoods, bumpers and all that too. Ditch the wing, foglights and scrape that guk off the trunk. Take out the rear speakers and anything else that could have a mesaurable weight, and doesnt hold the car together. Just remember, it has to be legally registered in the state you come from. I weighed my car in Peru and with big speakers and an amp in the car but in racing trim otherwise, it weighed 2768 pounds. That's alot less than I expected, and can eaisly drop.

Exactly, that's the appeal of Street Mod for me. I can do pretty much anything I ever wanted to my Sube and it fits within the class. My RB5 Prodrive wing is the only "mod" that probably makes me slower.

To follow-up on Eric's note about the suspension mods, you must use the stock mounting points on the frame or unibody. As long as you're not drilling new holes into the frame, it's legal.
Moreover, all the typical Turbo/SC electronics are legal too. If I remember correctly, the only drivetrain stuff that starts to get you into trouble (of the stuff I remember from this board) are non-stock injectors or fuel pump. This next statement may end up confusing the issue, but as of today any production *Subaru* engine part would be a legal install. I haven't quite figured out if 22b like parts from Subaru would be legal. Anyone else know?

There is SOME ambuguiy about bumpers, but the intent is clear. Most of the stuff on your car (except for quarter panels, windows, doors, and the trunk) can be replaced with any off the shelf part. As long as the bumper swap is "technically" a bumper, it's legal.

Hiya Molez..

See ya in a couple weeks.

Hold on...let's see what the good ol rule book says about fuel....

Since SM is allowed all the modifications as SP, here's what I found in SP...

14.10 G - Fuel lines and pumps are unrestricted ...etc...

Look it up, There's more than what's here, but it looks like there's no problem in SM regarding Fuel delivery, and that should include pumps.

KC-

Of course, you're right. There are SOME SM specific exceptions to the SP allowed mods. Not many, but there are some. Unfortunately, I don't even own a 2000 rule book. I based my post on what I remember from discussions on the STU/SM ONElist e-mail board.

Oh yea, speaking of 22B's
you are allowed to swap engines, as long as it is from the same family. There is no mention of it having to be available, standard, in the US. How much power are they getting out of tuned 22B 2.2L turbos and typeRA 2L turbos? And just how light can you make an RS. I think the RS is perfect for street mod. It just needs to be built up!

And one other thing. Scott, can I paaaleeeeeassssse drive your turbo around town in Harrisburg. I promise I wont blow it up, and I really want an idea of how much faster these cars are from stock thru the rev range.

You are right, that was the catch. It just has to mount using existing holes. No biggie, for those parts atleast.

Wink

While I doubt you'll be impressed with the power, you're welcom to take it for a spin...

I replaced a bad hose from the wastegate to the turbo and am STILL putting out just 3 psi. I removed the wastegate and it didn't look like it was 'dumping' prematurely. Is it an exhaust leak before the turbo? Maybe, but I THOUGHT I had that fixed a month ago. Looks like I'll be driving a *slow* RS at Ayer and Harrisburg. If I'm lucky, I'll have it fully powered for the Peru Tour event. But the way things have been going with this damn thing,I wouldn't bet on it.

The offer stands either way.
