Power Windows and Mirrors Don't Work

Sup everyone,

Well last night on my way home, I went to get on the expressway and when I went to go pay the toll, my windows didn't go down. I was like ***? Anyhow so I tried to see if it might be the windown lock but it has happend to me before and I switched it on and off and still nothing. So I keep driving and I have a tendency to always adjust my mirrors. When I went to adjust it, they did not work either. Now I know I have a problem. Is there a fuse that runs both of them or something? Thats the only thing I can think of that could have caused them to stop working. I did a search and came up with a fuse SBF #6. Is this correct? Is this fuse one of the big black box type fuses or a regular mini fuse? Well if you guys can help me out with this I would really appreciate it. I need to know if that is the correct fuse that I need to check. How would I go about checking if the fuse is blown if it's one of the big black box looking fuses? Will it be burnt on the tips or what? Well gotta go. Hope you guys can help me out.

The mirrors apparently work off of the same fuse as the cigarette lighter. Not sure about the mirrors though.

Did you have any work done on the car recently? If you had a stereo put in they probably would have unplugged the controls for both the mirrors and the windows. It would be unusual for them to leave all of it unplugged, but not unusual for them to forget one of them.

Where is the plug for the mirrors and all? Is it the same one for the windows? WHat color is it? Or what color wires are they? Thanks for your help.

Oops. Meant to say the mirrors work off the same fuse as the cig lighter, not sure about the windows.

Anyway, the plug I'm talking about for the mirrors is on the back of the switch for the mirrors. If you had stereo work done they have to dissect the center console, and often the switch for the mirrors doesn't get plugged back in.

And in order to get at the door speakers they have to take the arm rest apart, then take the door panel off. Sometimes the window switch doesn't get plugged back in.

Okay, if you want to check the plugs yourself you're going to have to get at least a philipshead and regular flat screw driver. They are all behind the dash/trim of your car which you'll need to remove (sounds more difficult than it really is). But before we go that route, try using the window control on the passenger side, if that works, but your mirrors (center console) and driver side window doesn't work than it's probably plugs.

Likewise, do your automatic door locks work? If so then your driver side door is plugged in correclty (locks and window plug in the same spot inside the door).

At this point my hunch is that it's a fuse. The easiest way to check is to sit in your car and look to the left of your steering wheel and then down a bit. In the 2000 2.5RS the fuse box is behind a little coin tray (it should be labeled). To remove it, open the coin tray then pull on it up and out, you may have to tug a bit if you haven't been in there before, but it just pops out.

Now on the back of the piece you just removed will be a diagram of all the fuses and a decent description of what each is, you should be able to figure out which fuse controls mirrors and which controls windows (might even be the same fuse though I don't htink it is). Pull that fuse out and check to see if it's been blown (you can see a metal wire inside, if it's got a break in it the fuse is dead). If the fuse is dead, run to your local autoparts store and get a new one (the type you need will be written on the fuse, usually 15, 20, 25, or 30). While you're there, do yourself a favor and buy a set of replacement fuses for all the fuse types in your car (never hurts to keep 'em in your trunk).

Plug the new fuse in and try your windows. If they work all is good. If they don't check the fuse again, if it's blown that means you have a short somewhere in your electrical system. Assuming you've had nothing installed recently take the car to a service facility and have them find it for you under warranty, if you have had something installed recently take it back to the installer and tell them they screwed up. Whatever you do, DO NOT put in a higher rated fuse.

Okay, now, if it wasn't a fuse and you suspect it's the connectors to the switches themselves here's some instructions:

Center dash (mirrors): THis one is easy, open up your arm rest storage bin (the one with the cup holder inside) just on top near the emergency break will be two plastic "caps", they're round. Just pop 'em off (gently), use the flat head screwdriver if you have to. Underneath each is a philips screw, unscrew those. Now, with the emergency break extended gently pry the plastic piece up from wher eyou unscrewed it (it snaps in place and out, might have to tug a bit). Keep in mind this piece extends past the e-brake and near to the shift lever.

Once you have it up, look underneath where the mirror switch is, there's a female connector there, it should have a white plug with two wires leading out of it connected to it, if not, look all around where you pulled the dash trim out, you should see the connector lying down there, just plug it in and reverse the above steps (snap the trim in place, replace screws and caps) and all should be good.

Driver side door controls (windows and locks): This is trickier, as the door trim is one large piece with lots of snaps and tabs that hold it in place. First you'lld need to remove the plastic piece around the door handle. It just snaps in place and can be removed by prying it out (GENTLY!!!). It takes a bit of playing with it but it will come out.

Next there's two screws holding the trim in place by the armrest in the door. Both are covered with plastic caps, you can see one (it's square shaped) on the side of the armest, just pry it loose with the flat head screwdriver. The other is kind of rectangular and has a round top, it's to the left of the square one. Once you have both removed you'll see two philips head screws, remove these (they are long and take a while to come out).

The last trim piece you need to remove before the door panel comes off is at the front of the door on top, near the driver side rear view mirror (except inside the car). It's just a big black plastic traingle and it pops loose (use the flat head screw driver to gently pull it off).

Okay, now the door panel is ready to come off, all around the edges of the panel are sets of tab snaps that hold it in place, I recommend starting at the bottom of the door on one of the corners and gently pulling on it until you hear the snaps come loose, there are several so just take your time and gently pull it loose.There are no snaps on the top of the door, it sort of "hangs" on the window edge, so with the snaps removed gently ease the panel up.

The window/lock control plug connects to the door trim, so be careful with the panel, don't just pull it away, check to see if the plugs are connected, if they aren't they'll be hanging there, just plug 'em back in (only go one way).

With that done, reverse the above process (make sure you hang the door on the window correctly) and to get the door snaps in place just whack it with the flat of your fist, replace screws and plastic pieces and you're good to go.

Whew, that should cover it
