Baja Turbos: What works with What? STICKY THIS!
Upgrading Bajas are a little frustrating, as we all know, because websites/manufactures are not clearly labeling their product as "Baja Compatible". We're forced to do more homework than other, and bounce ideas off others. While that seems fun for other, I find it slows down my work.
I'll start the list, and you reply with updates; then I'll update my main post for quick reference. Here are some things to get started on: *******************************Keep in mind the following****************************** If parts are coming off of other Subarus, make sure to list the year and series of vehicle. Also if a part has to be altered to fit, IE trimming; rewiring; welding; or cutting; NOTE IT with a DIY scale of 1-10. Picture are welcome too. ************************************************** ************************************* Top Mount Intercooler (TMIC) 1. USDM STi intercooler (2004-??) Fits a stock Baja turbo with modification to the 90" elbow between the turbo and Y-pipe. The length needs to be changed slightly. Also it requires the Sti or 2.0l wrx bypass valve, Y-pipe, bypass valve vac. line. The bypass valve hose that goes to the intake needs to come from an STI to clear the electronic throttle body. the hoodscoop shroud will no longer fit properly with any larger TMIC. NOTE: sometimes while in reverse engine rock causes the intercooler to impact the clutch reservoir cap (5MT) a few shims under the mounting tabs where it bolts down will angle the rear up the intercooler up and solve this. Tumble Generator Valve (TGV) TGV Deletes Fuel Injector Throttle Body Intake Manifold Up Pipe 1. 02-07 WRX & STi are compatible, make sure to reinstall the EGT sensor 2. Bosal catless up pipe is a direct bolt on- It is essentially the same as the STI although it may have thicker flanges. Does not have EGT bung so the CEL will have to be turned off at the ECU or the resistor mod. It accepts OEM heat shielding. Down Pipe 1. Random Technology makes one that is a perfect fit, NO modding (DIY Rating 2) 2. Helix Catless DP requires some cutting to fit (DIY Rating 3) 3. OAKOS Automotive downpipe fits the 5MT Baja turbo with no modification. It clears the brace on the firewall and everything. It is catless and 2.5" diameter. Brakes 1. Front Brakes: The Baja shares the front brakes with the 2003-2005 WRX. Rotors and brake pads are directly interchangeable. 2006-2007 WRX 4 pots (red) and the older JDM 4 pots (gray) will bolt up (uses existing rotor) but will not clear the OEM wheel choices. Will need different wheels or wheel spacers. 2004 STI Brembo- direct bolt on, needs larger wheels for clearance. (Must be 2004 STi rotors as anything after that will have a different bolt pattern). May need to dust shields behind the rotors. Rear Brakes- Baja has same rears as the outback H6. So anything pad or rotor listed for the "H6 rear" will bolt right up. There are some decent choices as this is used to be a pipular upgrade for 2.0 WRX guys back in the day. Fuel Pump OEM Radio Deck Driver/Passenger Seat Steering Wheel Air Bags Center Gauge Cluster (RPM, MPH, Temp) Exhaust Manifold/ Equal or on Equal Turbo Charger 1. STI turbocharger is a direct bolt on. It will fit the stock intercooler with some creative stretching and wiggling. But swapping in a proper length Y-pipe is best. Of course with the USDM STi intercooler and Y-pipe it is a perfect fit. Radio Deck 1. Radio Deck- Basically anything Subaru the same year or older will fit the baja. I replaced the OEM 6 disc with a 2004 WRX head unit to add a tape deck. I also think the illumination matches a bit better. Short Throw Shifter 1. Short throw shifters- anything for a Subaru 5MT (WRX, FXT, LGT) of the same model years will fit the Baja 5MT turbo or non-turbo. Anything from the SPT assembly to Kartboy lever or bushings. Clutch 1. Clutches- 2004-2005 Baja turbo can use anything intended for a 2002-2005 WRX "pull style" clutch. 2006 Baja T is a "push style" and is compatible with 2006-2007 WRX (I do not know about later models) Baja friendly websites: http://www.ezsubaruparts.com http://www.rallitek.com

Baja Turbos: What works with What?
Nothing like the Cobb AP you see for the rest if the Subaru line. Some people have found a glitch (ecu transplant) to make one work; but I wouldn't reccomend it.
You can get a Baja open source tunered for $200-300. That's half the price of a used AP. Subie_Sleeper has a lot of working knowledge whenit comes to ProTuning. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The WRX and Sti up pipes (up until model year 08) fit without any modification.
If you do not reinstall the EGT sensor you WILL have to either disable the code or do the resistor mod. |

only certain Downpipes fit without alteration. i have a Helix catless DP and it required modification of the steel bracket at the back of the engine bay for clearance.

i completely forgot the DIY scale on the cutting of the bracket for the helix DP. it wasn't hard, just annoying doing trial and error of whether i took enough material off, in the right place etc. if an oil change is a 1 and spark plugs are 5, i would say it would be a 2.5 - 3. it isn't hard as long as you have an angle grinder and the patience to grind the bracket and install the DP to test fit, drive it, find out you didn't remove enough material and pull the DP off and start over again a few times. my second removal was enough for me, and i was getting really good at pulling the DP loose at that point...

Sam has high prices but I was able to get a couple hundred dollars dropped....the DP and Turbo Back Exhaust for sale there is pricy because it has a High Flow CATs in the DP and Midpipe.
The advantage of purchasing his equipment is: you woun't have swaybar or hanger problems, that most baja drivers get. Ohh and the $400 cutout can be bought straight from the vender for $189. Last edited by honda killer; 06-02-2010 at 10:38 AM. |

it's a helix catless downpipe for an 02 - 07 WRX fitment. as far as i know, the only downpipes that are different are the new WRX's and the 05+ Legacy GT's since their turbo's are mounted a bit differently.
also, does anyone know if there is a basic stage 2 open source map for the baja around? i can find one for just about every other turbo subaru except the baja... Last edited by ascott13; 05-28-2010 at 06:47 PM. |

i see headers that say will fit wrx, sti, and legacys, so i'm guessing headers for 2.5s are all the same except for newer models and should fit bajas?

Installed a Grimmspeed uppipe and a used PDE catted 3" to 2.5" downpipe on the Baja .Everything was a great fit. Took me several hours as this was my first time working on a car. Also put the 2.2 Kohm 1/2 watt resistor into the heat probe connector which took away the check engine light .

^ Just for the record, NAPA and Rock Auto list the wrong axle for the Baja as well.

The following parts are the CV inner and outer boot for Forester XT, Baja Turbo, Legacy Turbo, & Outback Turbo. Pretty much any axle that has a MALE fittin gon each end.
Inner CV Boot: 28323SA030 Outter CV Boot: 28323FG030 NOTE: Rebuilding these axles with new boots is really easy, but you need OEM Subaru Boots. I went through two differnt third party boot kits (online vendors), the boots they sell are for the remanufactured ones sold via AutoZone and O'Rielly. As soon as I figure out how to use my movie software, I'll post my video on youtube. |
