Well... I have dog ears, and can hear a car detonating even when it's not mine, two lanes over.... go figure..

So.. IMO, it's loud enough.. as for where... honestly.. anywhere..

Sure miss my old WRX

Even if you miss the detonation, it's really easy to hear what follows after a bunch of them

I've had reported detonation while datalogging with my UTEC and I never heard a thing, only felt the car pull back timing.. This was at 6,300rpm or around there, where the STOCK computer will NOT pull back timing from what I've heard (which makes me glad I'm using a utec)

It is not very loud at all unless severe. You can just hear a metallic click or ticking sound in the cabin if it is quite marked. With headphones listening to a knock sensor (my preferred method) or through hose attached to ear defenders at one end and attached to copper pipe with a squashed end with a hole through which you bolt it to the engine block, you can hear a lot of detonation that you would not hear in the cabin.

Having said all that, if there is audible detonation when I am mapping someone's car I point it out to them, but only one has ever said they noticed it or could hear it.

In addition, some ECUs pick up detonation when it is not present, especially if they use a predefined threshold which triggers a retard.

I like the Knocklink, whilst ugly, it works and saves many engines. It is by no means the last word, but it does correlate with what you can hear. A sudden spike beyond normal background noise is very obvious, and nearly always responds to a reduction in boost and/or retarded timing and/or extra fuel.

This may be a silly question, but will the UTEC always indicate detonation through a flashing CEL light (knock indicator)? I've read a bit on the topic, but I'm still confused about the difference between knock and detonation.
